A closed-form energy-minimization basis for gravity field source estimation: DIDACKS IV

By building on the field energy minimization underpinnings of DIDACKS theory and by making certain natural assumptions about the general nature of the energy/density configuration of the Earth's interior it is shown that the problem of estimating the Earth's interior density, either globally or locally, can be naturally reframed as a energy minimization one. The basic idea is that a static stable density configuration is a minimum energy configuration, which tends to be unique (when all other things are equal); hence, a field energy minimization approach can be counted on to generally lead to a physically motivated unique solution. Techniques touched on should provide practical implementation tools, or at least some helpful hints, for handling many of the well-known ill-posedness issues associated with mass density estimation and other related inverse-source Laplacian problems.

Uniqueness Theorems for Point Source Expansions: DIDACKS V

Finite collections of point masses contained in some bounded domain produce a unique field in the exterior domain, which means that the associated basis functions (often called ``fundamental solutions'') are independent. A new proof of this result is given in this paper that can be generalized to other finite combinations of point source distributions. For example, this paper shows in $\mathbb{R}^3$ that a finite combination of point dipoles produces a unique field. The strategy employed in the paper is to develop results for analytic functions in the complex plane and then carry them over to harmonic functions in the real plane, and from there to harmonic functions in $\mathbb{R}^3$. More results are shown for $\mathbb{R}^2$ and for $\mathbb{C}$ than are shown for more general settings. For example, in the complex plane, the paper shows that a finite combination of higher order poles of any order in the interior of a unit disk always corresponds to a unique analytic function in the exterior of a unit disk.

Four Properties of Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces

A reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS) has four well-known easily derived properties. Since these properties are usually not emphasized as a simple means of gaining insight into RKHS structure, they are singled out and proved in this brief article.

Comments on the Reliability of Lawson and Hanson's Linear Distance Programming Algorithm: Subroutine LDP

This brief paper: (1) Discusses strategies to generate random test cases that can be used to extensively test any Linear Distance Program (LDP) software. (2) Gives three numerical examples of input cases generated by this strategy that cause problems in the Lawson and Hanson LDP module. (3) Proposes, as a standard matter of acceptable implementation procedures, that (unless it is done internally in the software itself, but, in general, this seems to be much rarer than one would expect) all users should test the returned output from any LDP module for self-consistency since it incurs only a small amount of added computational overhead and it is not hard to do.

Dirichlet integral dual-access collocation-kernel space analytic interpolation for unit disks: DIDACKS I

This article presents a technique for analytic interpolation over the exterior of a unit disk using complex poles in the interior--as well as corresponding techniques for the exterior of a real unit disk and for the interior of a real and complex unit disk. This is accomplished by developing special kernel spaces labeled dual-access collocation-kernel spaces. Higher order pole and logarithmic point source kernels are also considered. Relationships to Szego and Bergman kernel theory are addressed.

Dirichlet integral point-source harmonic interpolation over ${\mathbb{R}}^3$ spherical interiors: DIDACKS II

This article addresses the interpolation of harmonic functions over the interior of a $\mathbb{R}^3$ unit sphere by linear combinations of fundamental-solution point-source basis functions, where all the sources are assumed to be outside the sphere. Since the source and field points are in different domains, the fundamental-solution basis functions are bounded and can be regarded as defining a new type of kernel space that is related to reproducing kernel Hilbert space (RKHS), but is different from it and which is labeled a Dirichlet integral dual-access collocation-kernel space (DIDACKS). DIDACKS theory has direct implications for the method of fundamental solutions (MFS) and some for the fast multipole method (FMM) and boundary element method (BEM).

Closed-form Dirichlet integral harmonic interpolation-fits for real n-dimensional and complex half-space: DIDACKS III

This article gives a ``fundamental solution'' based energy-norm harmonic interpolation approach for two half-space settings of interest: the upper-half $\mathbb{R}^n$ plane, where fundamental solutions satisfy Laplace's equation, and the upper-half complex plane, where simple poles are of interest. This approach can handle higher-order pole fits, as well as logarithmic source fits, in the complex setting and it can handle higher-order multipole fits in the general real $\mathbb{R}^n$ setting. Higher-order multipoles in the real $\mathbb{R}^n$ half-space setting are of particular interest since fits based on a commonly used type of radial-basis function (inverse multiquadrics) can be reinterpreted as multipole based interpolations that minimize energy forms.

A Dirichlet-integral based dual-access collocation-kernel approach to point-source gravity-field modleing

Problems in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are addressed where the scalar potential of an associated vector field satisfies Laplace's equation in some unbounded external region and is to be approximated by unknown (point) sources contained in the complimentary subregion. Two specific field geometries are considered: $\mathbb{R}^3$ half-space and the exterior of an $\mathbb{R}^3$ sphere, which are the two standard settings for geophysical and geoexploration gravitational problems. For these geometries it is shown that a new type of kernel space exists, which is labeled a Dirichlet-integral dual-access collocation-kernel space (DIDACKS) and that is well suited for many applications. The DIDACKS examples studied are related to reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces and they have a replicating kernel (as opposed to a reproducing kernel) that has the ubiquitous form of the inverse of the distance between a field point and a corresponding source point. Underpinning this approach are three basic mathematical relationships of general interest. Two of these relationships--corresponding to the two geometries--yield exact closed-form inner products and thus exact linear equation sets for the corresponding point source strengths of various types (i.e., point mass, point dipole and/or point quadrupole sets) at specified source locations. The given field is reconstructed not only in a point collocation sense, but also in a (weighted) field-energy error-minimization sense.
