A remark on measures of sections of $L_p$-balls

We show that the slicing problem holds true for subspaces of $L_p,p>2$ in the setting of arbitrary measures in place of volume. This generalizes a result of Milman for the original slicing problem.

On the interval of fluctuation of the singular values of random matrices

Let $A$ be a matrix whose columns $X_1,\dots, X_N$ are independent random vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Assume that the tails of the 1-dimensional marginals decay as $\mathbb{P}(|\langle X_i, a\rangle|\geq t)\leq t^{-p}$ uniformly in $a\in S^{n-1}$ and $i\leq N$. Then for $p>4$ we prove that with high probability $A/{\sqrt{n}}$ has the Restricted Isometry Property (RIP) provided that Euclidean norms $|X_i|$ are concentrated around $\sqrt{n}$. We also show that the covariance matrix is well approximated by the empirical covariance matrix and establish corresponding quantitative estimates on the rate of convergence in terms of the ratio $n/N$. Moreover, we obtain sharp bounds for both problems when the decay is of the type $ \exp({-t^{\alpha}})$ with $\alpha \in (0,2]$, extending the known case $\alpha\in[1, 2]$.

Thin-shell concentration for convex measures

We prove that for $s<0$, $s$-concave measures on ${\mathbb R}^n$ satisfy a thin shell concentration similar to the log-concave one. It leads to a Berry-Esseen type estimate for their one dimensional marginal distributions. We also establish sharp reverse H\"older inequalities for $s$-concave measures.

Sharp bounds on the rate of convergence of the empirical covariance matrix

Let $X_1,..., X_N\in\R^n$ be independent centered random vectors with log-concave distribution and with the identity as covariance matrix. We show that with overwhelming probability at least $1 - 3 \exp(-c\sqrt{n}\r)$ one has $ \sup_{x\in S^{n-1}} \Big|\frac{1/N}\sum_{i=1}^N (| |^2 - \E| |^2\r)\Big| \leq C \sqrt{\frac{n/N}},$ where $C$ is an absolute positive constant. This result is valid in a more general framework when the linear forms $( )_{i\leq N, x\in S^{n-1}}$ and the Euclidean norms $(|X_i|/\sqrt n)_{i\leq N}$ exhibit uniformly a sub-exponential decay. As a consequence, if $A$ denotes the random matrix with columns $(X_i)$, then with overwhelming probability, the extremal singular values $λ_{\rm min}$ and $λ_{\rm max}$ of $AA^\top$ satisfy the inequalities $ 1 - C\sqrt{n/N} \le {λ_{\rm min}/N} \le \frac{λ_{\rm max}/N} \le 1 + C\sqrt{n/N} $ which is a quantitative version of Bai-Yin theorem \cite{BY} known for random matrices with i.i.d. entries.

Moment estimates for convex measures

Let $p\geq 1$, $\eps >0$, $r\geq (1+\eps) p$, and $X$ be a $(-1/r)$-concave random vector in $\R^n$ with Euclidean norm $|X|$. We prove that $(\E |X|^{p})^{1/{p}}\leq c (C(\eps) \E|X|+\sigma_{p}(X))$, where $\sigma_{p}(X)=\sup_{|z|\leq 1}(\E| |^{p})^{1/p}$, $C(\eps)$ depends only on $\eps$ and $c$ is a universal constant. Moreover, if in addition $X$ is centered then $(\E |X|^{-p})^{-1/{p}}\geq c(\eps) (\E|X| - C \sigma_{p}(X))$.

A short proof of Paouris' inequality

We give a short proof of a result of G. Paouris on the tail behaviour of the Euclidean norm $|X|$ of an isotropic log-concave random vector $X\in\R^n$, stating that for every $t\geq 1$, $P(|X|\geq ct\sqrt n)\leq \exp(-t\sqrt n)$. More precisely we show that for any log-concave random vector $X$ and any $p\geq 1$, $(E|X|^p)^{1/p}\sim E |X|+\sup_{z\in S^{n-1}}(E |< z,X>|^p)^{1/p}$.

Tail estimates for norms of sums of log-concave random vectors

We establish new tail estimates for order statistics and for the Euclidean norms of projections of an isotropic log-concave random vector. More generally, we prove tail estimates for the norms of projections of sums of independent log-concave random vectors, and uniform versions of these in the form of tail estimates for operator norms of matrices and their sub-matrices in the setting of a log-concave ensemble. This is used to study a quantity $A_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the operator norm of the sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns of a matrix $A$ with independent isotropic log-concave random rows. We apply our tail estimates of $A_{k,m}$ to the study of Restricted Isometry Property that plays a major role in the Compressive Sensing theory.

Chevet type inequality and norms of submatrices

We prove a Chevet type inequality which gives an upper bound for the norm of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix in terms of expectation of the supremum of "symmetric exponential" processes compared to the Gaussian ones in the Chevet inequality. This is used to give sharp upper estimate for a quantity $\Gamma_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the Euclidean operator norm of the sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns of an isotropic log-concave unconditional random matrix. We apply these estimates to give a sharp bound for the Restricted Isometry Constant of a random matrix with independent log-concave unconditional rows. We show also that our Chevet type inequality does not extend to general isotropic log-concave random matrices.

Geometry of log-concave Ensembles of random matrices and approximate reconstruction

We study the Restricted Isometry Property of a random matrix $\Gamma$ with independent isotropic log-concave rows. To this end, we introduce a parameter $\Gamma_{k,m}$ that controls uniformly the operator norm of sub-matrices with $k$ rows and $m$ columns. This parameter is estimated by means of new tail estimates of order statistics and deviation inequalities for norms of projections of an isotropic log-concave vector.

The Gelfand widths of $\ell_p$-balls for $0<p\leq 1$

We provide sharp lower and upper bounds for the Gelfand widths of $\ell_p$-balls in the $N$-dimensional $\ell_q^N$-space for $0<p\leq 1$ and $p<q \leq 2$. Such estimates are highly relevant to the novel theory of compressive sensing, and our proofs rely on methods from this area.

Restricted isometry property of matrices with independent columns and neighborly polytopes by random sampling

This paper considers compressed sensing matrices and neighborliness of a centrally symmetric convex polytope generated by vectors $\pm X_1,...,\pm X_N\in\R^n$, ($N\ge n$). We introduce a class of random sampling matrices and show that they satisfy a restricted isometry property (RIP) with overwhelming probability. In particular, we prove that matrices with i.i.d. centered and variance 1 entries that satisfy uniformly a sub-exponential tail inequality possess this property RIP with overwhelming probability. We show that such "sensing" matrices are valid for the exact reconstruction process of $m$-sparse vectors via $\ell_1$ minimization with $m\le Cn/\log^2 (cN/n)$. The class of sampling matrices we study includes the case of matrices with columns that are independent isotropic vectors with log-concave densities. We deduce that if $K\subset \R^n$ is a convex body and $X_1,..., X_N\in K$ are i.i.d. random vectors uniformly distributed on $K$, then, with overwhelming probability, the symmetric convex hull of these points is an $m$-centrally-neighborly polytope with $m\sim n/\log^2 (cN/n)$.

Quantitative estimates of the convergence of the empirical covariance matrix in Log-concave Ensembles

Let $K$ be an isotropic convex body in $\R^n$. Given $\eps>0$, how many independent points $X_i$ uniformly distributed on $K$ are needed for the empirical covariance matrix to approximate the identity up to $\eps$ with overwhelming probability? Our paper answers this question posed by Kannan, Lovasz and Simonovits. More precisely, let $X\in\R^n$ be a centered random vector with a log-concave distribution and with the identity as covariance matrix. An example of such a vector $X$ is a random point in an isotropic convex body. We show that for any $\eps>0$, there exists $C(\eps)>0$, such that if $N\sim C(\eps) n$ and $(X_i)_{i\le N}$ are i.i.d. copies of $X$, then $ \Big\|\frac{1}{N}\sum_{i=1}^N X_i\otimes X_i - \Id\Big\| \le \epsilon, $ with probability larger than $1-\exp(-c\sqrt n)$.

Majorizing measures and proportional subsets of bounded orthonormal systems

In this article we prove that for any orthonormal system $(\vphi_j)_{j=1}^n \subset L_2$ that is bounded in $L_{\infty}$, and any $1 < k <n$, there exists a subset $I$ of cardinality greater than $n-k$ such that on $\spa\{\vphi_i\}_{i \in I}$, the $L_1$ norm and the $L_2$ norm are equivalent up to a factor $μ(\log μ)^{5/2}$, where $μ= \sqrt{n/k} \sqrt{\log k}$. The proof is based on a new estimate of the supremum of an empirical process on the unit ball of a Banach space with a good modulus of convexity, via the use of majorizing measures.

On the Limiting Empirical Measure of the sum of rank one matrices with log-concave distribution

We consider $n\times n$ real symmetric and hermitian random matrices $H_{n,m}$ equals the sum of a non-random matrix $H_{n}^{(0)}$ matrix and the sum of $m$ rank-one matrices determined by $m$ i.i.d. isotropic random vectors with log-concave probability law and i.i.d. random amplitudes $\{τ_{α}\}_{α=1}^{m}$. This is a generalization of the case of vectors uniformly distributed over the unit sphere, studied in [Marchenko-Pastur (1967)]. We prove that if $n\to \infty, m\to \infty, m/n\to c\in \lbrack 0,\infty)$ and that the empirical eigenvalue measure of $H_{n}^{(0)}$ converges weakly, then the empirical eigenvalue measure of $H_{n,m}$ converges in probability to a non-random limit, found in [Marchenko-Pastur (1967)].

Uniform uncertainty principle for Bernoulli and subgaussian ensembles

We present a simple solution to a question posed by Candes, Romberg and Tao on the uniform uncertainty principle for Bernoulli random matrices. More precisely, we show that a rectangular k*n random subgaussian matrix (with k < n) has the property that by arbitrarily extracting any m (with m < k) columns, the resulting submatrices are arbitrarily close to (multiples of) isometries of a Euclidean space. We obtain the optimal estimate for m as a function of k,n and the degree of "closeness" to an isometry. We also give a short and self-contained solution of the reconstruction problem for sparse vectors.

A note on subgaussian estimates for linear functionals on convex bodies

We give an alternative proof of a recent result of Klartag on the existence of almost subgaussian linear functionals on convex bodies. If $K$ is a convex body in ${\mathbb R}^n$ with volume one and center of mass at the origin, there exists $x\neq 0$ such that $$|\{y\in K: |< y,x> |\gr t\|<\cdot, x>\|_1\}|\ls\exp (-ct^2/\log^2(t+1))$$ for all $t\gr 1$, where $c>0$ is an absolute constant. The proof is based on the study of the $L_q$--centroid bodies of $K$. Analogous results hold true for general log-concave measures.

Reconstruction and subgaussian operators

We present a randomized method to approximate any vector $v$ from some set $T \subset \R^n$. The data one is given is the set $T$, and $k$ scalar products $(\inr{X_i,v})_{i=1}^k$, where $(X_i)_{i=1}^k$ are i.i.d. isotropic subgaussian random vectors in $\R^n$, and $k \ll n$. We show that with high probability, any $y \in T$ for which $(\inr{X_i,y})_{i=1}^k$ is close to the data vector $(\inr{X_i,v})_{i=1}^k$ will be a good approximation of $v$, and that the degree of approximation is determined by a natural geometric parameter associated with the set $T$. We also investigate a random method to identify exactly any vector which has a relatively short support using linear subgaussian measurements as above. It turns out that our analysis, when applied to $\{-1,1\}$-valued vectors with i.i.d, symmetric entries, yields new information on the geometry of faces of random $\{-1,1\}$-polytope; we show that a $k$-dimensional random $\{-1,1\}$-polytope with $n$ vertices is $m$-neighborly for very large $m\le {ck/\log (c' n/k)}$. The proofs are based on new estimates on the behavior of the empirical process $\sup_{f \in F} |k^{-1}\sum_{i=1}^k f^2(X_i) -\E f^2 |$ when $F$ is a subset of the $L_2$ sphere. The estimates are given in terms of the $γ_2$ functional with respect to the $ψ_2$ metric on $F$, and hold both in exponential probability and in expectation.

Convex bodies with few faces

It is proved that if $u_1,\ldots, u_n$ are vectors in ${\Bbb R}^k, k\le n, 1 \le p < \infty$ and $$r = ({1\over k} \sum ^n_1 |u_i|^p)^{1\over p}$$ then the volume of the symmetric convex body whose boundary functionals are $\pm u_1,\ldots, \pm u_n$, is bounded from below as $$|\{ x\in {\Bbb R}^k\colon \ |\langle x,u_i\rangle | \le 1 \ \hbox{for every} \ i\}|^{1\over k} \ge {1\over \sqrt{\rho}r}.$$ An application to number theory is stated.
