Yellow whispering-gallery-mode lasing from amorphous fluoride microspheres

Compact, low-noise coherent light sources in the visible remain challenging due to limited gain platforms and inefficient pumping. We report a new route to visible microlasing based on direct, one-photon blue pumping and an amorphous fluoride gain material platform. Dysprosium doped fluoride microspheres are fabricated via plasma-torch-induced, pressureless amorphization of single crystals, enabling compositions beyond conventional glass-forming limits while ensuring ultrasmooth morphology, low phonon energy, and homogeneous dopant distribution. We demonstrate the first fiber-coupled whispering-gallery-mode lasing from an amorphous fluoride microsphere in the yellow (573 nm), with an ultralow threshold of $190 \mu$W despite spin-forbidden Dy$^{3+}$ transitions. Lasing is evidenced by characteristic light-light curve indicating a low spontaneous emission factor, narrow-linewidth emission, and relaxation oscillations yielding a loaded quality factor of $Q = 3.5 \times 10^6$. This platform is readily extendable to other rare-earth emitters, enabling entire visible spectral coverage beyond the limitations of upconversion pumping, with prospects for color-tunable and white-light emission. Finally, fiber-based amplification of the WGM signal demonstrates a pathway toward compact, fiber-integrated visible microlasers with controllable noise and linewidth.

Ho3+-doped CALGO crystals for high-power ultrafast 2.1-{\mu}m lasers

Ho3+-doped disordered CaAlGdO4 (CALGO) crystals have recently emerged as a promising gain material platform for next-generation high-power ultrafast 2.1-{\mu}m laser systems. This laser gain material offers a unique combination of high-gain, small quantum defect, inhomogeneously broadened spectra, and good thermal conductivity, enabling ultrashort pulse generation and amplification at high-average power and high pulse energy. Many systems, including mode-locked oscillators and amplifiers with state-of-the-art performance, have been demonstrated in the last few years that promise to meet growing application demands for efficient ultrafast laser technology in this wavelength region. In this review paper, we summarize recent achievements using this gain material both in oscillators and amplifiers and place these results in the state-of-the-art of 2-{\mu}m ultrafast laser technology, present detailed spectroscopic characterization of this material, and discuss future perspectives of further performance scaling of Ho:CALGO lasers.

Resonantly Pumped Tunable Tm,X:CaF2 Lasers: Effect of Buffer Ions (X = Y, La, Gd, and Lu)

We report on the eye-safe laser performance of Tm3+-doped calcium fluoride crystals, modified with optically inactive "buffer" cations (Y3+, Lu3+, Gd3+, and La3+), under in-band diode-pumping at 1.68 um. In the free-running regime, the 1.5 at.% Tm, 4 at.% Y:CaF2 laser operates with a high slope efficiency of 47% with respect to absorbed pump power. By employing an MgF2 birefringent plate, the emission wavelength of this laser is continuously tuned over 242 nm (1820 - 2062 nm) highlighting its potential for broadly tunable and ultrafast oscillators. The spectroscopic properties of Tm3+ ions in CaF2 crystals with and without buffer ions are also compared.

Yellow stimulated emission from Dy$^{3+}$-doped silica glass microspheres

Dy$^{3+}$-doped silica glass whispering gallery mode microspheres are fabricated by fiber fusion splicing. They present an almost ideal spherical morphology with a radius ranging from 60 to 67 ${\mu}$m as determined by confocal laser microscopy. The host composition of the microsphere is close to that of the fiber core. The dopant Dy$^{3+}$ ions are uniformly distributed across the microsphere as evidenced by ${\mu}$-luminescence studies and present a luminescence lifetime. The Dy$^{3+}$-doped glass microspheres were excited via evanescent field coupling using a half-tapered fiber and a blue 450-nm GaN laser diode (direct pumping scheme). The yellow fluorescence of Dy$^{3+}$ ions is filtered by the whispering gallery modes (free spectral range: 0.5 nm for 67-${\mu}$m radius microsphere). The onset of stimulated emission is further observed highlighting the potential of such microresonators for narrow-linewidth light sources directly emitting visible light.

Photo-Writable Sulfide Glasses Used to Fabricate Core-Clad Fiber Doped with Pr$^{3+}$ for Mid-IR Luminescence

With the ultimate goal of developing rare-earth doped chalcogenide fiber fabrication for sensing, amplification, and laser applications, a core/clad germanium-gallium sulfide fiber doped with Pr$^{3+}$ has been fabricated. The compositions of the core and the clad were selected to ensure the positive $\Delta$n by adding CdI$_2$ and CsCl, respectively, in the GeS$_2$ -Ga$_2$S$_3$ matrix. The choice of these compositions was also justified from experimental parameters, including characteristic temperatures and viscosity. Moreover, the permanent photo writability of the sulfide glass family by a femtosecond laser is investigated from the perspective of Bragg grating photo-inscription. Structural investigations by Raman spectroscopy are presented and the effect of the Pr$^{3+}$ rare-earth ion on the structure is underlined. Finally, the emission of the step-index fiber, made by the rod-in-tube technique between 3.1 $\mu$m and 5.5 $\mu$m (by pumping at 1.55 $\mu$m), is demonstrated.
