Monolayer-Defined Flat Colloidal PbSe Quantum Dots in Extreme Confinement

Colloidal two-dimensional lead chalcogenide nanocrystals represent an intriguing new class of materials that push the boundaries of quantum confinement by combining a crystal thickness down to the monolayer with confinement in the lateral dimension. In particular flat PbSe quantum dots exhibit efficient telecommunication band-friendly photoluminescence (1.43 - 0.83 eV with up to 61% quantum yield) that is highly interesting for fiber-optics information processing. By using cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we probe distinct single layer-defined PbSe quantum dot populations down to a monolayer with in-gap state free quantum dot-like density of states, in agreement with theoretical tight binding calculations. Cryogenic ensemble photoluminescence spectra reveal mono-, bi-, and trilayer contribution, confirming the structural, electronic and theoretical results. From larger timescale shifts and ratio changes in the optical spectra we infer Ostwald ripening in solution and fusing in deposited samples of thinner flat PbSe quantum dots, which can be slowed down by surface passivation with PbI2. By uncovering the interplay between thickness, lateral size and density of states, as well as the synthetic conditions and post-synthetic handling, our findings enable the target-oriented synthesis of two-dimensional PbSe quantum dots with precisely tailored optical properties at telecom wavelengths.

Sub-meV Linewidths in Polarized Low-Temperature Photoluminescence of 2D PbS Nanoplatelets

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are promising materials for classical and quantum light sources due to their versatile chemistry and efficient photoluminescence (PL) properties. While visible emitters are well-established, the pursuit of excellent (near-)infrared sources continues. One notable candidate in this regard are photoluminescent two-dimensional (2D) PbS nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibiting excitonic emission at 720 nm (1.7 eV) directly tying to the typical emission range limit of CdSe NPLs. Here, we present the first comprehensive analysis of low-temperature PL from this material class. Ultrathin 2D PbS NPLs exhibit high crystallinity confirmed by scanning transmission electron microscopy, and revealing Moire patterns in overlapping structures. At 4K, we observe unique PL features in single PbS NPLs, including narrow zero-phonon lines with line widths down to 0.6 meV and a linear degree of polarization up to 90%. Time-resolved measurements identify trions as the dominant emission source with a 2.3 ns decay time. Sub-meV spectral diffusion and no immanent blinking over minutes is observed, as well as discrete spectral jumps without memory effects. These findings advance the understanding and underpin the potential of colloidal PbS NPLs for optical and quantum technologies.

Giant magnetoelastic coupling in Love acoustic waveguide based on uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo nanostructured thin film on Quartz ST-cut

Coupling between dynamic strain and magnetization in ferromagnetic thin films has attracted special consideration as it presents both intriguing fundamental physics problems and technological importance for potential multi-functional devices and information handling. The dynamic strain can be generated by acoustic waves including bulk, surface or guided waves. In this work, we propose the theoretical and experimental investigation of the interaction of pure shear horizontal (SH) wave with a uniaxial multilayered TbCo2/FeCo thin film in a delay line configuration fabricated on Quartz ST-90X cut. We evaluate theoretically the evolution of phase velocity as a function of magnetic field and experimentally the variation of the transmission coefficient. A piezomagnetic model was developed allowing us to calculate the elastic stiffness constants of the multilayer as a function of the applied magnetic field. The model was also implemented for acoustic waves dispersion curves calculation. We show that the evolution of phase velocity is dominated by the C66 elastic stiffness constant variation as expected for the case of shear horizontal surface wave. The fabricated device let us exciting both fundamental and third harmonic shear mode at 410 MHz and 1.2 GHz, respectively. For both modes, the theoretical results corroborate very well the experimental ones. At 1.2 GHz the mode exhibits a maximum phase velocity shift close to 2.5% and an attenuation reaching 500 dB/cm, for a sensitivity as high as 250 ppm/Oe. The reported theoretical model and experimental results are of tremendous interest for the development of advanced devices for magnetic field sensing applications as well as investigating magnon-phonon interaction at a fundamental level.

Phenomenological analysis of densification mechanism during spark plasma sintering of MgAl2O4

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) of MgAl2O4 powder was investigated at temperatures between 1200 and 1300{\deg}C. A significant grain growth was observed during densification. The densification rate always exhibits at least one strong minimum, and resumes after an incubation period. Transmission electron microscopy investigations performed on sintered samples never revealed extensive dislocation activity in the elemental grains. The densification mechanism involved during SPS was determined by anisothermal (investigation of the heating stage of a SPS run) and isothermal methods (investigation at given soak temperatures). Grain-boundary sliding, accommodated by an in-series {interface-reaction/lattice diffusion of the O$^2$-anions} mechanism controlled by the interface-reaction step, governs densification. The zero-densification-rate period, detected for all soak temperatures, arise from the difficulty of annealing vacancies, necessary for the densification to proceed. The detection of atomic ledges at grain boundaries and the modification of the stoichiometry of spinel during SPS could be related to the difficulty to anneal vacancies at temperature soaks.
