Rate of convergence of a fully discrete structure-preserving midpoint scheme for the stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation

The stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert (sLLG) equation is a strongly nonlinear stochastic PDE with a non-convex pointwise constraint arising in the theory of micromagnetics. We analyse a fully discrete, structure-preserving finite element approximation of the sLLG equation with coloured multiplicative Stratonovich noise on a bounded interval. The method utilises continuous piecewise affine finite elements, mass lumping, and midpoint time discretisation to preserve the unit-length constraint exactly at the finite element nodes. Under suitable regularity assumptions on the initial data and the noise, we establish uniform higher-moment stability and develop an error analysis for the scheme. The analysis exploits the geometric structure of the equation and the stochastic midpoint discretisation. For every $\gamma\in(0,\frac12)$, we prove first-order spatial convergence and temporal convergence of order $\gamma$ in the natural discrete energy norm, locally in mean square on events of arbitrarily large probability and, consequently, in probability. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first convergence-rate result for a fully discrete structure-preserving finite element scheme solving the stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation.

Stochastic resistive Hall--MHD with current fluctuations: martingale weak solutions via a convergent structure-preserving finite element method

We study the stochastic resistive Hall--magnetohydrodynamic (Hall--MHD) system on bounded convex polyhedral domains, subject to nonlinear perfectly conducting boundary conditions. The system is driven by multiplicative Gaussian forcing in the momentum equation together with structured curl-type noise in the induction equation arising from stochastic perturbations of the resistive and Hall parts in the generalised Ohm law. We develop a fully discrete, linearly implicit, structure-preserving mixed finite element method based on a compatible discrete de Rham complex, which preserves the magnetic Gauss law exactly. We prove subsequential convergence of the discrete solutions to a finite-energy weak martingale solution, thereby obtaining a constructive existence result for the stochastic Hall--MHD system with curl-type noise. Numerical experiments illustrate the stochastic dynamics, exact divergence preservation, and convergence of the method.

A priori error analysis of a mass-lumped midpoint finite element method with a structure-preserving solver for the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation with Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction

The Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert (LLG) equation is a fundamental model in micromagnetics for the magnetisation dynamics of ferromagnets at temperatures well below the Curie temperature. In chiral magnetic materials, the bulk Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (DMI) contributes a first-order term to the effective field, induces a natural chiral boundary condition, and plays an important role in the dynamics of skyrmions. In this paper, we analyse a mass-lumped midpoint finite element scheme for the LLG equation with exchange interaction and bulk DMI. The fully discrete scheme preserves the nodal unit-length constraint exactly and satisfies a discrete energy law. Under suitable regularity assumptions on the exact solution, we prove an optimal-order convergence estimate in the energy norm, first order in space and second order in time. To our knowledge, this is the first such a priori error estimate for the mass-lumped midpoint finite element method, even in the exchange-only case. Since the midpoint scheme is nonlinear, its practical implementation requires an algebraic solver that is compatible with the geometric structure of the method. To this end, we propose a structure-preserving fixed-point iteration which preserves the nodal unit-length constraint at every iterate. We further prove that, under an appropriate residual stopping criterion, the resulting inexact scheme retains the same convergence rate as the ideal midpoint scheme, up to the contribution of the solver tolerance. Numerical experiments support the theoretical results and illustrate the robustness and structure-preserving properties of the method.

Error analysis of a divergence-preserving mixed finite element scheme for the incompressible Hall--magnetohydrodynamic equations

The incompressible Hall-magnetohydrodynamics (Hall--MHD) system presents substantial analytical and computational challenges due to its stiff, highly nonlinear Hall term and the strict requirement that the magnetic field remains solenoidal. In this paper, we study a Voigt-regularised Hall--MHD system, which is of independent analytical interest and provides a physically consistent, well-posed regularisation of the original model. We propose, analyse, and implement a structure-preserving, linear, fully discrete finite element method for this regularised problem. Using finite element exterior calculus and a mixed formulation, the spatial discretisation enforces the divergence-free condition on the magnetic field exactly, while a skew-symmetric, linearly implicit time discretisation yields unconditional energy stability. We establish optimal convergence rates for the Voigt-regularised problem and, additionally, derive error estimates for the unregularised Hall--MHD system, with the Voigt regularisation playing a crucial role in the non-resistive regime. Finally, numerical simulations in both 2.5D and 3D corroborate the theoretical results and demonstrate the physical fidelity of the scheme.

The Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation with spin diffusion: Global strong solution and finite element approximation

The spin-diffusion Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (SDLLB) system is a nonlinearly coupled system of quasilinear vector-valued PDEs which models the interaction between spin-polarised currents and magnetisation at high temperatures. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, assuming the initial data is sufficiently small, we show the existence of a unique global strong solution to the SDLLB equation in a bounded domain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $d\leq 3$, thus ensuring well-posedness of the model. Secondly, we propose a decoupled linearised fully-discrete finite element scheme to solve the problem. Despite the strong nonlinearity of the system, the proposed scheme only requires the solution of two completely decoupled linear systems per time-step. Assuming adequate regularity of the exact solution and a certain time-step constraint, we rigorously show that the numerical scheme converges at an optimal rate. Several numerical experiments corroborate our theoretical results.

Error analysis of scalar auxiliary variable finite element methods for the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation

The Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (LLB) equation is a well-established micromagnetic model for describing magnetisation dynamics in ferromagnets at elevated temperatures. In this paper, we propose and analyse two fully discrete, conforming finite element schemes based on the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach for solving the LLB equation in the high-temperature regime above the Curie point. The first scheme employs a semi-implicit Euler time discretisation, while the second is based on a linearly extrapolated BDF2 method. Both schemes are linear, unconditionally stable with respect to the energy norm, and satisfy a discrete energy law involving the SAV-based energy functional that approximates the true micromagnetic energy. Under suitable regularity assumptions, we establish unconditional energy stability and derive optimal-order error estimates in $\mathbb{L}^2, \mathbb{H}^1$, and $\mathbb{L}^\infty$ norms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first rigorous error analysis of a fully discrete SAV-based method for a quasilinear vector-valued problem, as well as the first linear, energy-stable scheme for the LLB equation in the high-temperature regime that achieves second-order temporal accuracy. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical convergence rates and compare the efficiency of the proposed schemes with existing methods; additional tests with adaptive time stepping illustrate the behaviour of the SAV-based modified energy in relation to the physical energy.

Strong convergence of finite element schemes for the stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation

The dynamics of magnetisation in a bounded ferromagnet in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=1,2$) at high temperatures can be described by the stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (sLLB) equation, which is a vector-valued quasilinear stochastic partial differential equation. In this paper, assuming adequate regularity of the initial data, we establish strong convergence in $L^2(\Omega)$ of several semi-implicit and implicit fully discrete finite element schemes for the sLLB equation, together with explicit convergence rates. The analysis relies on localised error estimates and new exponential moment bounds for the exact solution. As a by-product, these moment bounds yield mean-square exponential stability of solutions and uniqueness of the invariant measure in one spatial dimension under a small noise assumption. We also sharpen existing convergence-in-probability results for the numerical schemes. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate and support the theoretical findings.

Strong pathwise solutions for a class of stochastic thermo-magneto-hydrodynamic-type systems with multiplicative noise

We establish the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions, in both the PDE and probabilistic sense, for a broad class of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) on a bounded domain $\mathscr{O}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, $d\in \{1,2,3\}$, driven by multiplicative Gaussian noise. The solutions are global in time for $d\in \{1,2\}$. This theory simultaneously covers several physically relevant systems, including a class of stochastic generalised Burgers equations, a class of stochastic damped Navier--Stokes equations, stochastic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), stochastic B\'enard convection in porous media, stochastic convective dynamo system, stochastic thermo-magneto-micropolar fluids, and stochastic diffusive tropical climate model, for which previous results only provide analytically weak martingale or pathwise solutions. The proof relies on Galerkin approximation and compactness argument. Up to a suitable stopping time, we derive strong moment bounds and verify a Cauchy property for the approximate solutions, in the absence of any inherent cancellation structure. By employing a localisation argument and a Gronwall-type lemma for stochastic processes, we establish the existence and uniqueness of maximal strong pathwise solutions, which are global when $d\in \{1,2\}$.

Error analysis of a fully discrete structure-preserving finite element scheme for a diffuse-interface model of tumour growth

We develop a linear fully discrete structure-preserving finite element method for a diffuse-interface model of tumour growth. The system couples a Cahn--Hilliard type equation with a nonlinear reaction-diffusion equation for nutrient concentration and admits a dissipative energy law at the continuous level. For the discretisation, we employ a scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) formulation together with a mixed finite element method for the Cahn--Hilliard part and standard conforming finite elements for the reaction-diffusion equation in space, combined with a first-order Euler time-stepping scheme. The resulting method is unconditionally energy-stable, mass-preserving, and inherits a discrete energy dissipation law associated with the SAV-based approximate energy functional, while requiring the solution of only linear systems at each time step. Under suitable regularity assumptions on the exact solution, we derive rigorous error estimates in $L^2$, $H^1$, and $L^\infty$ norms, establishing first-order accuracy in time and optimal-order accuracy in space. A key step in this analysis is the proof of boundedness of the numerical solutions in $L^\infty$. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical convergence rates and demonstrate the robustness of the method in capturing characteristic phenomena such as aggregation and chemotactic tumour growth.

A mixed finite element method for a class of fourth-order stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative noise

We develop a fully discrete, semi-implicit mixed finite element method for approximating solutions to a class of fourth-order stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with non-globally Lipschitz and non-monotone nonlinearities, perturbed by spatially smooth multiplicative Gaussian noise. The proposed scheme is applicable to a range of physically relevant nonlinear models, including the stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar (sLLBar) equation, the stochastic convective Cahn--Hilliard equation with mass source, and the stochastic regularised Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (sLLB) equation, among others. To overcome the difficulties posed by the interplay between the nonlinearities and the stochastic forcing, we adopt a `truncate-then-discretise' strategy: the nonlinear term is first truncated before discretising the resulting modified problem. We show that the strong solution to the truncated system converges in probability to that of the original problem. A fully discrete numerical scheme is then proposed for the truncated problem. Assuming initial data in $\mathbb{H}^2$, we utilise parabolic smoothing estimates and the temporal H\"older continuity of the solution to establish both convergence in probability and strong convergence (with quantitative rates) for the two fields used in the mixed formulation. Numerical simulations are provided to support the theoretical results.

Numerical analysis of the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation with spin-torques

The current-induced magnetisation dynamics in a ferromagnet at elevated temperatures can be described by the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (LLB) equation with spin-torque terms. In this paper, we focus on the regime above the Curie temperature. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of a global strong solution to the model in spatial dimensions $d=1,2,3$, under an additional smallness assumption on the initial data if $d=3$. Relevant smoothing and decay estimates are also derived. We then propose a fully discrete, linearly implicit finite element scheme for the problem and prove that it achieves optimal-order convergence, assuming adequate regularity of the exact solution. In addition, we introduce an unconditionally energy-stable finite element method for the case of negligible non-adiabatic torque. This scheme is also shown to converge optimally and, in the absence of current, preserves energy dissipation at the discrete level. Finally, we present numerical simulations that support the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods.

Global attractor and robust exponential attractors for some classes of fourth-order nonlinear evolution equations

We study the long-time behaviour of solutions to some classes of fourth-order nonlinear PDEs with non-monotone nonlinearities, which include the Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar (LLBar) equation (with all relevant fields and spin torques) and the convective Cahn--Hilliard/Allen--Cahn (CH-AC) equation with a proliferation term, in dimensions $d=1,2,3$. Firstly, we show the global well-posedness, as well as the existence of global and exponential attractors with finite fractal dimensions for these problems. In the case of the exchange-dominated LLBar equation and the CH-AC equation without convection, an estimate for the rate of convergence of the solution to the corresponding stationary state is given. Finally, we show the existence of a robust family of exponential attractors when $d\leq 2$. As a corollary, exponential attractor of the LLBar equation is shown to converge to that of the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation in the limit of vanishing exchange damping, while exponential attractor of the convective CH-AC equation is shown to converge to that of the convective Allen--Cahn equation in the limit of vanishing diffusion coefficient.

Mixed finite element methods for the Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar and the regularised Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equations in micromagnetics

The Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar (LLBar) and the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (LLBloch) equations are nonlinear vector-valued PDEs which arise in the theory of micromagnetics to describe the dynamics of magnetic spin field in a ferromagnet at elevated temperatures. We consider the LLBar and the regularised LLBloch equations in a unified manner, thus allowing us to treat the numerical approximations for both problems at once. In this paper, we propose a semi-discrete mixed finite element scheme and two fully discrete mixed finite element schemes based on a semi-implicit Euler method and a semi-implicit Crank--Nicolson method to solve the problems. These numerical schemes provide accurate approximations to both the magnetisation vector and the effective magnetic field. Moreover, they are proven to be unconditionally energy-stable and preserve energy dissipativity of the system at the discrete level. Error analysis is performed which shows optimal rates of convergence in $\mathbb{L}^2$, $\mathbb{L}^\infty$, and $\mathbb{H}^1$ norms. These theoretical results are further corroborated by several numerical experiments.

The Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation on polytopal domains: Unique existence and finite element approximation

The Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equation (LLBE) describes the evolution of the magnetic spin field in ferromagnets at high temperatures. In this paper, we study the numerical approximation of the LLBE on bounded polytopal domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $d\le 3$. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to the LLBE and propose a linear, fully discrete, conforming finite element scheme for its approximation. While this scheme is shown to converge, the obtained rate is suboptimal. To address this shortcoming, we introduce a viscous (pseudo-parabolic) regularisation of the LLBE, which we call the $\epsilon$-LLBE. For this regularised problem, we prove the unique existence of strong solutions and establish a rate of convergence of the solution $\boldsymbol{u}^\epsilon$ of the $\epsilon$-LLBE to the solution $\boldsymbol{u}$ of the LLBE as $\epsilon\to 0^+$. Furthermore, we propose a linear, fully discrete, conforming finite element scheme to approximate the solution of the $\epsilon$-LLBE. Given sufficiently smooth initial data, error analysis is performed to show stability and uniform-in-time convergence of the scheme. Finally, several numerical simulations are presented to corroborate our theoretical results.

The stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar equation: Global solution and invariant measure

The Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar (LLBar) equation perturbed by both additive and multiplicative noises is a system of fourth order stochastic PDEs which models the evolution of magnetic spin fields in ferromagnetic materials at elevated temperatures, taking into account longitudinal damping, long-range interactions, spin current, and noise-induced phenomena at high temperatures. In this paper, we show the existence of a unique pathwise solution (which is analytically strong) to the stochastic LLBar equation posed in a bounded domain $\mathscr{D}\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $d=1,2,3$. We also prove the convergence of this pathwise solution to that of the stochastic Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch (LLB) equation in the limit of vanishing exchange relaxation parameter. Finally, we show the Feller property of the Markov semigroup associated with the strong solution, and prove the existence of nontrivial invariant measures. For temperatures above the Curie temperature, exponential stability of the solution and uniqueness of invariant measure are obtained under certain dissipativity conditions.

Stable $C^1$-conforming finite element methods for a class of nonlinear fourth-order evolution equations

We propose some finite element schemes to solve a class of fourth-order nonlinear PDEs, which include the vector-valued Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar equation, the Swift--Hohenberg equation, and various Cahn--Hilliard-type equations with source and convection terms, among others. The proposed numerical methods include a spatially semi-discrete scheme and two linearised fully-discrete $C^1$-conforming schemes utilising a semi-implicit Euler method and a semi-implicit BDF method. We show that these numerical schemes are stable in $\mathbb{H}^2$. Error analysis is performed which shows optimal convergence rates in each scheme. Numerical experiments corroborate our theoretical results.

Global solutions of the Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar equation

The Landau--Lifshitz--Baryakhtar (LLBar) equation is a generalisation of the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert and the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch equations which takes into account contributions from nonlocal damping and is valid at moderate temperature below the Curie temperature. Therefore, it is used to explain some discrepancies between the experimental observations and the known theories in various problems on magnonics and magnetic domain-wall dynamics. In this paper, the existence and uniqueness of global weak, strong, and regular solutions to LLBar equation are proven. H\"older continuity of the solution is also discussed.
