Algebraic and measurable embeddings between square-free right-angled Artin groups

Let $Γ,Δ$ be finite simplicial graphs, and assume that $Γ$ has no induced squares. We prove that the right-angled Artin group $A(Δ)$ measurably embeds into $A(Γ)$ if and only if $A(Δ)$ embeds as a subgroup in a graph product of free abelian groups over $Γ$. This in turn has a graph-theoretical characterisation which can be checked algorithmically. If additionally $A(Γ)$ and $A(Δ)$ have cohomological dimension equal to two and $A(Γ)$ is not isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}\times F_n$, we get that $A(Δ)$ measurably embeds into $A(Γ)$ if and only if it embeds as a subgroup in $A(Γ)$. Our proof relies on the following algebraic statement. Let $K_1,\dots,K_n$ be a family of pairwise disjoint cliques in the square-free graph $Γ$ (or more generally in its extension graph $Γ^{\mathrm{ext}}$), and let $g_1,\dots,g_n$ be elements of $A(Γ)$ with respective parabolic supports $A(K_1),\dots,A(K_n)$. Then the subgroup of $A(Γ)$ generated by $g_1,\dots,g_n$ is a right-angled Artin group, where the only relations impose that $g_i$ and $g_j$ commute if $K_i\cup K_j$ is contained in a clique of $Γ$ (or of $Γ^{\mathrm{ext}}$).

Relative Untwisted Outer Space for Right-Angled Artin Groups

For G, H two finite collections of finitely generated subgroups of a right-angled Artin group A, the untwisted McCool group U(A; G, Ht) is the subgroup of untwisted outer automorphisms of A preserving the conjugacy class of each element of G and acting trivially up to conjugacy on each element of H. We prove that when the elements of G are standard subgroups of A, U(A; G, Ht) acts properly cocompactly on a finite-dimensional subcomplex of the spine of untwisted outer space for A, providing a geometric model for this group and proof that it is of type VF.

Spatial Cube Complexes

We provide a new geometric characterization for the spine of untwisted outer space of a right-angled Artin group, constructed by Charney, Stambaugh, and Vogtmann. We realize the spine as the natural simplicial complex associated with the category of spatial cube complexes, a new class of locally CAT(0) cube complexes with a simple definition in terms of hyperplane collapses.

On residual finiteness of graphs of free groups with cyclic edge groups

We characterize which groups splitting as finite graphs of free groups with cyclic edge groups are residually finite. Such a group $G$ is residually finite if and only if all its Baumslag-Solitar subgroups are residually finite. From a presentation of $G$, we construct a finite labeled graph $Γ$, and show that residual finiteness of $G$ is equivalent to an easily-detectable property of this graph. This characterization proves a conjecture of Wise.
