On aggregation-quantization permutability problem for discrete-time Markov chains

Given random walk on a graph, the corresponding discrete-time quantum walk can be constructed using the method proposed by Szegedy. On the other hand, given a partition of the set of states of a Markov chain, one can study the corresponding aggregated process. We extend the aggregation technique to the level of quantum Markov chains. We provide conditions under which application of these two operations - Szegedy's quantization and aggregation - give the same result. These consist of the strong lumpability of the underlying Markov chain supplemented by nonlinear relations, generalizing Kolmogorov's cycle condition, that account for the coefficients of both the original and the aggregated transition matrices. In particular, we show that the conditions are satisfied in the case of the random walk on graphs equipped with equitable partitions. We present several examples, which include the classical/quantum walks on Platonic solids. We discuss also relation of discrete-time classical/quantum walks on $N$-dimensional hypercube and the Ehrenfests urn model with $N$ particles. We apply our technique for of discrete-time walks on Cayley graphs of free groups. We also compare our results with those obtained using Cantero-Moral-Velazquez uniformization of unitary matrices.

Non-commutative multiple bi-orthogonal polynomials: formal approach and integrability

We define the non-commutative multiple bi-orthogonal polynomial systems, which simultaneously generalize the concepts of multiple orthogonality, matrix orthogonal polynomials and of the bi-orthogonality. We present quasideterminantal expressions for such polynomial systems in terms of formal bi-moments. The normalization functions for such monic polynomials satisfy the non-commutative Hirota equations, while the polynomials provide solution of the corresponding linear system. This shows, in particular, that our polynomial systems form a part of the theory of integrable systems. We study also a specialization of the problem to non-commutative multiple orthogonal polynomials, what results in the corresponding Hankel-type quasideterminantal expressions in terms of the moments. Moreover, such a reduction allows to introduce in a standard way the discrete-time variable and gives rise to an integrable system which is non-commutative version of the multidimensional discrete-time Toda equations.

Determinantal approach to multiple orthogonal polynomials, and the corresponding integrable equations

We study multiple orthogonal polynomials exploiting their explicit determinantal representation in terms of moments. Our reasoning follows that applied to solve the Hermite-Pad\'{e} approximation and interpolation problems. We study also families of multiple orthogonal polynomials obtained by variation of the measures known from the theory of discrete-time Toda lattice equations. We present determinantal proofs of certain fundamental results of the theory, obtained earlier by other authors in a different setting. We derive also quadratic identities satisfied by the polynomials, which are new elements of the theory. Resulting equations allow to present multiple orthogonal polynomials within the theory of integrable systems.

Hermite-Pad\'{e} approximation, multiple orthogonal polynomials, and multidimensional Toda equations

We review recent results on the connection between Hermite-Pad\'e approximation problem, multiple orthogonal polynomials, and multidimensional Toda equations in continuous and discrete time. In order to motivate interest in the subject we first present a pedagogical introduction to the classical, by now, relation between the Pad\'e approximation problem, orthogonal polynomials, and the Toda lattice equations. We describe also briefly generalization of the connection to the interpolation problems and to the non-commutative algebra level.

B\"{a}cklund transformations as integrable discretization. The geometric approach

We present interpretation of known results in the theory of discrete asymptotic and discrete conjugate nets from the "discretization by B\"{a}cklund transformations" point of view. We collect both classical formulas of XIXth century differential geometry of surfaces and their transformations, and more recent results from geometric theory of integrable discrete equations. We first present transformations of hyperbolic surfaces within the context of the Moutard equation and Weingarten congruences. The permutability property of the transformations provides a way to construct integrable discrete analogs of the asymptotic nets for such surfaces. Then after presenting the theory of conjugate nets and their transformations we apply the principle that B\"{a}cklund transformations provide integrable discretization to obtain known results on the discrete conjugate nets. The same approach gives, via the Ribaucour transformations, discrete integrable analogs of orthogonal conjugate nets.

Spectral quantization of discrete random walks on half-line, and orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle

We define quantization scheme for discrete-time random walks on the half-line consistent with Szegedy's quantization of finite Markov chains. Motivated by the Karlin and McGregor description of discrete-time random walks in terms of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a measure with support in the segment $[-1,1]$, we represent the unitary evolution operator of the quantum walk in terms of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. We find the relation between transition probabilities of the random walk with the Verblunsky coefficients of the corresponding polynomials of the quantum walk. We show that the both polynomials systems and their measures are connected by the classical Szeg\H{o} map. Our scheme can be applied to arbitrary Karlin and McGregor random walks and generalizes the so called Cantero-Gr\"{u}nbaum-Moral-Vel\'{a}zquez method. We illustrate our approach on example of random walks related to the Jacobi polynomials. Then we study quantization of random walks with constant transition probabilities where the corresponding polynomials on the unit circle have two-periodic real Verblunsky coefficients. We present geometric construction of the spectrum of such polynomials (in the general complex case) which generalizes the known construction for the Geronimus polynomials. In the Appendix we present the explicit form, in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle and polynomials orthogonal on the real line with coefficients of arbitrary period.

Non-autonomous multidimensional Toda system and multiple interpolation problem

We study the interpolation analogue of the Hermite-Pad\'e type I approximation problem. We provide its determinant solution and we write down the corresponding integrable discrete system as an admissible reduction of Hirota's discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. Apart from the $\tau$-function form of the system we provide its variant, which in the simplest case of dimension two reduces to the non-autonomous discrete-time Toda equations.

Non-commutative Hermite--Pad\'{e} approximation and integrability

We introduce and solve the non-commutative version of the Hermite-Pad\'{e} type I approximation problem. Its solution, expressed by quasideterminants, leads in a natural way to a subclass of solutions of the non-commutative Hirota (discrete Kadomtsev--Petviashvili) system and of its linear problem. We also prove integrability of the constrained system, which in the simplest case is the non-commutative discrete-time Toda lattice equation known from the theory of non-commutative Pad\'{e} approximants and matrix orthogonal polynomials.

Hermite-Pad\'{e} approximation and integrability

We show that solution to the Hermite-Pad\'{e} type I approximation problem leads in a natural way to a subclass of solutions of the Hirota (discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili) system and of its adjoint linear problem. Our result explains the appearence of various ingredients of the integrable systems theory in application to multiple orthogonal polynomials, numerical algorthms, random matrices, and in other branches of mathematical physics and applied mathematics where the Hermite-Pad\'{e} approximation problem is relevant. We present also the geometric algorithm, based on the notion of Desargues maps, of construction of solutions of the problem in the projective space over the field of rational functions. As a byproduct we obtain the corresponding generalization of the Wynn recurrence. We isolate the boundary data of the Hirota system which provide solutions to Hermite-Pad\'{e} problem showing that the corresponding reduction lowers dimensionality of the system. In particular, we obtain certain equations which, in addition to the known ones given by Paszkowski, can be considered as direct analogs of the Frobenius identities. We study the place of the reduced system within the integrability theory, which results in finding multidimensional (in the sense of number of variables) extension of the discrete-time Toda chain equations.

Integrability and geometry of the Wynn recurrence

We show that the Wynn recurrence (the missing identity of Frobenius of the Pad\'{e} approximation theory) can be incorporated into the theory of integrable systems as a reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. This allows, in particular, to present the geometric meaning of the recurrence as a construction of the appropriately constrained quadrangular set of points. The interpretation is valid for a projective line over arbitrary skew field what motivates to consider non-commutative Pad\'{e} theory. We transfer the corresponding elements, including the Frobenius identities, to the non-commutative level using the quasideterminants. Using an example of the characteristic series of the Fibonacci language we present an application of the theory to the regular languages. We introduce the non-commutative version of the discrete-time Toda lattice equations together with their integrability structure. Finally, we discuss application of the Wynn recurrence in a different context of the geometric theory of discrete analytic functions.

Discrete Darboux system with self-consistent sources and its symmetric reduction

The discrete non-commutative Darboux system of equations with self-consistent sources is constructed, utilizing both the vectorial fundamental (binary Darboux) transformation and the method of additional independent variables. Then the symmetric reduction of discrete Darboux equations with sources is presented. In order to provide a simpler version of the resulting equations we introduce the $\tau/\sigma$ form of the (commutative) discrete Darboux system. Our equations give, in continuous limit, the version with self-consistent sources of the classical symmetric Darboux system.

Non-commutative bi-rational maps satisfying Zamolodchikov equation, and Desargues lattices

We present new solutions of the functional Zamolodchikov tetrahedron equation in terms of birational maps in totally non-commutative variables. All the maps originate from Desargues lattices, which provide geometric realization of solutions to the non-Abelian Hirota-Miwa system. The first map is derived using the original Hirota's gauge for the corresponding linear problem, and the second one from its affine (non-homogeneous) description. We provide also an interpretation of the maps within the local Yang-Baxter equation approach. We exploit decomposition of the second map into two simpler maps which, as we show, satisfy the pentagonal condition. We provide also geometric meaning of the matching ten-term condition between the pentagonal maps. The generic description of Desargues lattices in homogeneous coordinates allows to define another solution of the Zamolodchikov equation, but with functional parameter which should be adjusted in a particular way. Its ultra-local reduction produces a birational quantum map (with two central parameters) with Zamolodchikov property, which preserves Weyl commutation relations. In the classical limit our construction gives the corresponding Poisson map satisfying the Zamolodchikov condition.

The Coxeter relations and KP map for non-commuting symbols

We give an action of the symmetric group on non-commuting indeterminates in terms of series in the corresponding Mal'cev-Newmann division ring. The action is constructed from the non-Abelian Hirota-Miwa (discrete KP) system. The corresponding companion map, which gives generators of the action, is discussed in the generic case and the corresponding explicit formulas have been found in the periodic reduction. We discuss also briefly connection of the companion to the KP map with context-free languages.

Non-commutative double-sided continued fractions

We study double-sided continued fractions whose coefficients are non-commuting symbols. We work within the formal approach of the Mal'cev-Neumann series and free division rings. We start with presenting the analogs of the standard results from the theory of continued fractions, including their (right and left) simple fractions decomposition, the Euler-Minding summation formulas, and the relations between nominators and denominators of the simple fraction decompositions. We also transfer to the non-commutative double-sided setting the standard description of the continued fractions in terms of $2\times 2$ matrices presenting also a weak version of the Serret theorem. The equivalence transformations between the double continued fractions are described, including also the transformation from generic such fractions to their simplest form. Then we give the description of the double-sided continued fractions within the theory of quasideterminants and we present the corresponding version of the $LR$ and $qd$-algorithms. We study also (strictly and ultimately) periodic double-sided non-commutative continued fractions and we give the corresponding version of the Euler theorem. Finally we present a weak version of the Galois theorem and we give its relation to the non-commutative KP map, recently studied in the theory of discrete integrable systems.

Quadrangular sets in projective line and in Moebius space, and geometric interpretation of the non-commutative discrete Schwarzian Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation

We present geometric interpretation of the discrete Schwarzian Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation in terms of quadrangular set of points of a projective line. We give also the corresponding interpretation for the projective line considered as a Moebius chain space. In this way we incorporate the conformal geometry interpretation of the equation into the projective geometry approach via Desargues maps.

Hopf algebra structure of generalized quasi-symmetric functions in partially commutative variables

We introduce a coloured generalization $\mathrm{NSym}_A$ of the Hopf algebra of non-commutative symmetric functions described as a subalgebra of the of rooted ordered coloured trees Hopf algebra. Its natural basis can be identified with the set of sentences over alphabet $A$ (the set of colours). We present also its graded dual algebra $\mathrm{QSym}_A$ of coloured quasi-symmetric functions together with its realization in terms of power series in partially commutative variables. We provide formulas expressing multiplication, comultiplication and the antipode for these Hopf algebras in various bases -- the corresponding generalizations of the complete homogeneous, elementary, ribbon Schur and power sum bases of $\mathrm{NSym}$, and the monomial and fundamental bases of $\mathrm{QSym}$. We study also certain distinguished series of trees in the setting of restricted duals to Hopf algebras.

Non-commutative q-Painleve VI equation

By applying suitable centrality condition to non-commutative non-isospectral lattice modified Gel'fand-Dikii type systems we obtain the corresponding non-autonomous equations. Then we derive non-commutative q-discrete Painleve VI equation with full range of parameters as the (2,2) similarity reduction of the non-commutative, non-isospectral and non-autonomous lattice modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. We also comment on the fact that in making the analogous reduction starting from Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation no such "non-isospectral generalization" is needed.

Discrete KP equation with self-consistent sources

We show that the discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation with sources obtained recently by the "source generalization" method can be incorporated into the squared eigenfunction symmetry extension procedure. Moreover, using the known correspondence between Darboux-type transformations and additional independent variables, we demonstrate that the equation with sources can be derived from Hirota's discrete KP equations but in a space of higher dimension. In this way we uncover the origin of the source terms as coming from multidimensional consistency of the Hirota system itself.
