A combinatorial approach to obstructing left-orderability of Dehn fillings

We introduce the conjugate-slope property of knots, a variant of Nie's Property (D), which can be used to study non-left-orderability of fundamental groups arising from Dehn filling. We show that this property holds for any knot in $S^3$ admitting a diagram whose negative crossings can be "controlled" in a precise combinatorial sense. The conjugate-slope property also places strong restrictions on the kinds of left-orderings that the knot group can support, and implies that the image of the meridian is generalised torsion in the fundamental group of many of the knot's Dehn fillings.

The isomorphism problem for finitely generated bi-orderable groups

We analyze the classification problem for finitely generated orderable groups from the viewpoint of descriptive set theory. We analyze the standard Borel space of finitely generated left-orderable groups, and the subspace of finitely generated bi-orderable groups using spaces of relative cones. We use this setup to show that the isomorphism relation on finitely generated bi-orderable groups is weakly universal.

Order-detection and non-left-orderable surgeries on links

Beginning with a $3$-manifold $M$ having a single torus boundary component, there are several computational techniques in the literature that use a presentation of the fundamental group of $M$ to produce infinite families of Dehn fillings of $M$ whose fundamental groups are non-left-orderable. In this manuscript, we show how to use order-detection of slopes to generalise these techniques to manifolds with multiple torus boundary components, and to produce results that are sharper than what can be achieved with traditional techniques alone. As a demonstration, we produce an infinite family of hyperbolic links where many of the manifolds arising from Dehn filling have non-left-orderable fundamental groups. The family includes the Whitehead link, and in that case we produce a collection of non-left-orderable Dehn fillings that precisely matches the prediction of the L-space conjecture.

Generalized torsion in amalgams

We give a condition sufficient to ensure that an amalgam of groups is generalized torsion-free. As applications, we construct a closed 3-manifold whose fundamental group is generalized torsion-free and non bi-orderable; a one-relator group which is generalized torsion-free and non bi-orderable; and a group which is generalized torsion-free and non left-orderable.

Approximate normalizations for approximate density functionals

It seems self-evident that a density functional calculation should be normalized to the number of electrons in the system. We present multiple examples where the accuracy of the approximate energy is improved (sometimes greatly) by violating this basic principle. In one dimension, we explicitly derive the appropriate correction to the normalization. Beyond one dimension, Weyl asymptotics for energy levels yield these corrections for any cavity. We include examples with Coulomb potentials and the exchange energy of atoms to illustrate relevance to realistic calculations.

Order-detection, representation-detection, and applications to cable knots

Given a $3$-manifold $M$ with multiple incompressible torus boundary components, we develop a general definition of order-detection of tuples of slopes on the boundary components of $M$. In parallel, we arrive at a general definition of representation-detection of tuples of slopes, and show that these two kinds of slope detection are equivalent -- in the sense that a tuple of slopes on the boundary of $M$ is order-detected if and only if it is representation-detected. We use these results, together with new "relative gluing theorems," to show how the work of Eisenbud-Hirsch-Neumann, Jankins-Neumann and Naimi can be used to determine tuples of representation-detected slopes and, in turn, the behaviour of order-detected slopes on the boundary of a knot manifold with respect to cabling. Our cabling results improve upon work of the first author and Watson, and in particular, this new approach shows how one can use the equivalence between representation-detection and order-detection to derive orderability results that parallel known behaviour of L-spaces with respect to Dehn filling.

Rigidity of braid group actions on $\mathbb{R}$ and of low-genus mapping class group actions on $S^1$

Every nontrivial action of the braid group $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms yields, up to conjugation by a homeomorphism of $\mathbb{R}$, a representation $\rho : B_n \rightarrow \mathrm{H\widetilde{ome}o}_+(S^1)$ and therefore determines a translation number for every element of $B_n$. In this manuscript we offer a simple characterisation of which actions of $B_n$ on $\mathbb{R}$ produce translation numbers that agree with those arising from the standard Nielsen-Thurston action on $\mathbb{R}$. Our approach is to prove an analogous statement concerning left orderings of $B_n$ via a technique that uses the space of left orderings of $B_n$, the isolated points in this space, and the natural conjugacy action of $B_n$. We use this result to extend recent rigidity results of Mann and Wolff concerning mapping class group actions on $S^1$ to the case of low-genus surfaces with marked points.

Condensation and left-orderable groups

We discuss condensed left-orderings and develop new techniques to show that the conjugacy relation on the space of left-orderings is not smooth. These techniques apply to the solvable Baumslag Solitar groups and to Thompson's group F.

The Borel complexity of the space of left-orderings, low-dimensional topology, and dynamics

We develop new tools to analyze the complexity of the conjugacy equivalence relation $E_\mathsf{lo}(G)$, whenever $G$ is a left-orderable group. Our methods are used to demonstrate non-smoothness of $E_\mathsf{lo}(G)$ for certain groups $G$ of dynamical origin, such as certain amalgams constructed from Thompson's group $F$. We also initiate a systematic analysis of $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$, where $M$ is a $3$-manifold. We prove that if $M$ is not prime, then $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ is a universal countable Borel equivalence relation, and show that in certain cases the complexity of $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ is bounded below by the complexity of the conjugacy equivalence relation arising from the fundamental group of each of the JSJ pieces of $M$. We also prove that if $M$ is the complement of a nontrivial knot in $S^3$ then $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ is not smooth, and show how determining smoothness of $E_\mathsf{lo}(\pi_1(M))$ for all knot manifolds $M$ is related to the L-space conjecture.

Cofinal elements and fractional Dehn twist coefficients

We show that for a surface $S$ with positive genus and one boundary component, the mapping class of a Dehn twist along a curve parallel to the boundary is cofinal in every left ordering of the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}(S)$. We apply this result to show that one of the usual definitions of the fractional Dehn twist coefficient -- via translation numbers of a particular action of $\operatorname{Mod}(S)$ on $\mathbb{R}$ -- is in fact independent of the underlying action when $S$ has genus larger than one. As an algebraic counterpart to this, we provide a formula that recovers the fractional Dehn twist coefficient of a homeomorphism of $S$ from an arbitrary left ordering of $\operatorname{Mod}(S)$.

Order-detection of slopes on the boundaries of knot manifolds

Motivated by the L-space conjecture, we investigate various notions of order-detection of slopes on knot manifolds. These notions are designed to characterise when rational homology 3-spheres obtained by gluing compact manifolds along torus boundary components have left-orderable fundamental groups and when a Dehn filling of a knot manifold has a left-orderable fundamental group. Our developments parallel existing results in the case of Heegaard-Floer slope detection and foliation slope detection, leading to several conjectured structure theorems that connect relative Heegaard-Floer homology and the boundary behaviour of co-oriented taut foliations with the set of left-orders supported by the fundamental group of a 3-manifold. The dynamics of the actions of 3-manifold groups on the real line plays a key role in our constructions and proofs. Our analysis leads to conjectured dynamical constraints on such actions in the case where the underlying manifold is Floer simple.

The number of locally invariant orderings of a group

We show that if a nontrivial group admits a locally invariant ordering, then it admits uncountably many locally invariant orderings. For the case of a left-orderable group, we provide an explicit construction of uncountable families of locally invariant orderings; for a general group we provide an existence theorem that applies compactness to yield uncountably many locally invariant orderings. Along the way, we define and investigate the space of locally invariant orderings of a group, the natural group actions on this space, and their relationship to the space of left-orderings.

Circular orderability of 3-manifold groups

This paper initiates the study of circular orderability of $3$-manifold groups, motivated by the L-space conjecture. We show that a compact, connected, $\mathbb{P}^2$-irreducible $3$-manifold has a circularly orderable fundamental group if and only if there exists a finite cyclic cover with left-orderable fundamental group, which naturally leads to a "circular orderability version" of the L-space conjecture. We also show that the fundamental groups of almost all graph manifolds are circularly orderable, and contrast the behaviour of circularly orderability and left-orderability with respect to the operations of Dehn surgery and taking cyclic branched covers.

The space of circular orderings and semiconjugacy

Work of Linnell shows that the space of left-orderings of a group is either finite or uncountable, and in the case that the space is finite, the isomorphism type of the group is known---it is what is known as a Tararin group. By defining semiconjugacy of circular orderings in a general setting (that is, for arbitrary circular orderings of groups that may not act on $S^1$), we can view the subspace of left-orderings of any group as a single semiconjugacy class of circular orderings. Taking this perspective, we generalize the result of Linnell, to show that every semiconjugacy class of circular orderings is either finite or uncountable, and when a semiconjugacy class is finite, the group has a prescribed structure. We also investigate the space of left-orderings as a subspace of the space of circular orderings, addressing a question of Baik and Samperton.

Graph manifolds that admit arbitrarily many Anosov flows

For each natural number n, we construct an example of a graph manifold supporting at least n different Anosov flows that are not orbit equivalent. Our construction is reminiscent of the Thurston-Handel construction: we cut a geodesic flow on a surface of constant negative curvature into two pieces, modify the flow in each piece by pulling back to finite covers, and glue together compatible pairs of pullback flows along their boundary tori to get many distinct flows on the resulting graph manifold.

Circularly ordering direct products and the obstruction to left-orderability

Motivated by the recent result that left-orderability of a group $G$ is intimately connected to circular orderability of direct products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, we provide necessary and sufficient cohomological conditions that such a direct product be circularly orderable. As a consequence of the main theorem, we arrive at a new characterization for the fundamental group of a rational homology 3-sphere to be left-orderable. Our results imply that for mapping class groups of once-punctured surfaces, and other groups whose actions on $S^1$ are cohomologically rigid, the products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ are seldom circularly orderable. We also address circular orderability of direct products in general, dealing with the cases of factor groups admitting a bi-invariant circular ordering, and iterated direct products whose factor groups are amenable.

Borel structures on the space of left-orderings

In this paper we study the Borel structure of the space of left-orderings $\mathrm{LO}(G)$ of a group $G$ modulo the natural conjugacy action, and by using tools from descriptive set theory we find many examples of countable left-orderable groups such that the quotient space $\mathrm{LO}(G)/G$ is not standard. This answers a question of Deroin, Navas, and Rivas. We also prove that the countable Borel equivalence relation induced from the conjugacy action of $\mathbb{F}_{2}$ on $\mathrm{LO}(\mathbb{F}_{2})$ is universal, and leverage this result to provide many other examples of countable left-orderable groups $G$ such that the natural $G$-action on $\mathrm{LO}(G)$ induces a universal countable Borel equivalence relation.
