AC-OPF Feasibility Analysis and Sensitivity-Guided Capacitor Placement in a High-PV Islanded Microgrid

This paper presents a comparative AC Optimal Power Flow study on a real world city scale islanded microgrid with high solar PV penetration, implemented within a Digital Twin framework. Four objective function cases economic dispatch, voltage stress exposure via PV power factor variation, then optimal load delivery, and capacitor enhanced economic dispatch as recovery options are evaluated over a 47 hour time series horizon on the same network under a shared loading scenario. Optimization sensitivities OSQ and OSV extracted from all cases are combined into a composite placement score used to rank candidate buses for shunt capacitor upgrades. A post processing planning optimization balances capacitor upgrade cost against avoided value-of-lost-load, enabling direct economic comparison of infrastructure investment versus reliability penalties. Results demonstrate that sensitivity guided capacitor placement restores full load service across the horizon and provides targeted reactive support at a quantifiable cost trade off against corrective load shedding.

Vision Controlled Sensorized Prosthetic Hand

This paper presents a sensorized vision-enabled prosthetic hand aimed at replicating a natural hand's performance, functionality, appearance, and comfort. The design goal was to create an accessible substitution with a user-friendly interface requiring little to no training. Our mechanical hand uses a camera and embedded processors to perform most of these tasks. The interfaced pressure sensor is used to get pressure feedback and ensure a safe grasp of the object; an accelerometer is used to detect gestures and release the object. Unlike current EMG-based designs, the prototyped hand does not require personalized training. The details of the design, trade-offs, results, and informing the next iteration are presented in this paper.

Squeezing the quantum noise of a gravitational-wave detector below the standard quantum limit

Precision measurements of space and time, like those made by the detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), are often confronted with fundamental limitations imposed by quantum mechanics. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle dictates that the position and momentum of an object cannot both be precisely measured, giving rise to an apparent limitation called the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL). Reducing quantum noise below the SQL in gravitational-wave detectors, where photons are used to continuously measure the positions of freely falling mirrors, has been an active area of research for decades. Here we show how the LIGO A+ upgrade reduced the detectors' quantum noise below the SQL by up to 3 dB while achieving a broadband sensitivity improvement, more than two decades after this possibility was first presented.

Observing the optical modes of parametric instability

Parametric Instability (PI) is a phenomenon that results from resonant interactions between optical and acoustic modes of a laser cavity. This is problematic in gravitational wave interferometers where the high intra-cavity power and low mechanical loss mirror suspension systems create an environment where three mode PI will occur without intervention. We demonstrate a technique for real time imaging of the amplitude and phase of the optical modes of PI yielding the first ever images of this phenomenon which could form part of active control strategies for future detectors.

Feasibility study of beam-expanding telescopes in the interferometer arms for the Einstein Telescope

The optical design of the Einstein Telescope (ET) is based on a dual-recycled Michelson interferometer with Fabry-Perot cavities in the arms. ET will be constructed in a new infrastructure, allowing us to consider different technical implementations beyond the constraints of the current facilities. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of using beam-expander telescopes in the interferometer arms. We provide an example implementation that matches the optical layout as presented in the ET design update 2020. We further show that the beam-expander telescopes can be tuned to compensate for mode mismatches between the arm cavities and the rest of the interferometer.

Electrical Tuning of Valley Magnetic Moment via Symmetry Control

Crystal symmetry governs the nature of electronic Bloch states. For example, in the presence of time reversal symmetry, the orbital magnetic moment and Berry curvature of the Bloch states must vanish unless inversion symmetry is broken. In certain 2D electron systems such as bilayer graphene, the intrinsic inversion symmetry can be broken simply by applying a perpendicular electric field. In principle, this offers the remarkable possibility of switching on/off and continuously tuning the magnetic moment and Berry curvature near the Dirac valleys by reversible electrical control. Here we demonstrate this principle for the first time using bilayer MoS2, which has the same symmetry as bilayer graphene but has a bandgap in the visible that allows direct optical probing of these Berry-phase related properties. We show that the optical circular dichroism, which reflects the orbital magnetic moment in the valleys, can be continuously tuned from -15% to 15% as a function of gate voltage in bilayer MoS2 field-effect transistors. In contrast, the dichroism is gate-independent in monolayer MoS2, which is structurally non-centrosymmetric. Our work demonstrates the ability to continuously vary orbital magnetic moments between positive and negative values via symmetry control. This represents a new approach to manipulating Berry-phase effects for applications in quantum electronics associated with 2D electronic materials.
