Rethinking Handwritten Character Recognition

Non-Latin handwritten character recognition (HCR) remains understudied. Dominant methods consider it as generic image classification, which uses model scale to implicitly learn stroke structure. Structural-prior efficiency---the principle that explicitly encoding script-geometric regularities as architectural inductive biases can be both more accurate and require fewer parameters. We introduce GraphemeNet, a unified multi-script architecture, governed by two orthogonal binary axes. Axis 1 operationalises stroke-level geometric regularity via Persistent Scaffold Injection (PSI): a script-specific asymmetric convolution injects a stroke scaffold as a weighted residual at every encoder stage, continuously anchoring learned features to script geometry---distinct from skip connections, auxiliary losses, or attention reweighting. Axis 2 selects between global average pooling with gated fusion and cross-scale attention with a Stroke Topology Module (STM), depending on whether glyph discrimination requires spatial relational reasoning. A Linear Capsule Routing (LCR) with $O(n)$ routing is shared universally. On fourteen benchmarks across eight writing systems, the architecture generalises with only scaffold and decoder topology varying per script, consistently challenging, outperforming published baselines, and establishing structural-prior efficiency as a broadly applicable principle for multi-script HCR.

SCAFFOLD: A Large-Scale Structured Dataset of Computer Science Research Figures with Diagram QA and Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Traces

Computer science papers rely heavily on diagrams: architecture drawings, system flowcharts, and pipeline schematics that often carry more information than the text around them. There is currently no public dataset that pairs this specific kind of figure with captions, context, questions, answers, and step-by-step reasoning, which is exactly what is needed to train a vision-language model to understand them. We present \textbf{SCAFFOLD}\footnote{https://github.com/theranjitraut/scaffold}, a large-scale structured dataset of computer science research figures with diagram QA and Chain-of-Thought reasoning traces. This dataset consists of (image, caption, context, question-answer, chain-of-thought) tuples from arXiv computer science papers prepared using layout detection and PDF parsing, with an AI-assisted question-generation step. The resulting large-sized SCAFFOLD-157K dataset spans 3,058 papers with 29,887 figures (157,387 pairs), a medium-sized SCAFFOLD-37K dataset (36,797 pairs), and a small-sized SCAFFOLD-12K dataset (12,000 pairs). We used SCAFFOLD-12K for baseline experiments on Qwen2.5-VL-3B-Instruct.

Deep Reinforcement Learning to Master the Asymmetric Strategy of Baghchal

Baghchal is a two-player asymmetric board game with Nepali origins where four tigers are to capture goats and twenty goats desire to keep tigers in immobility. Although Baghchal has a complex structure which is strategic, has perfect information structure, and has cultural meaning, it has not been adequately covered in deep reinforcement learning (RL) literature. This paper gives a systematic exploration of four deep RL solutions Deep Q-Network (DQN), REINFORCE, Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and MuZero that are trained on one side of the asymmetric gameplay of Baghchal and then evaluated on the other side. The algorithms are rated based on win rate, draw rate, average captures, training convergence and computational cost. It is experimentally found that MuZero generates the best performance in both tasks, achieving 86 percent win over these Tiger and 62 percent win over these Goat and the ability to do so is due to the model-based planning machine through the Monte Carlo Tree Search. PPO is the most realistic algorithm and is provided to be competitive over both asymmetric tasks with significantly reduced computational costs compared to MuZero. Emergent strategic behavior analysis shows that model-based strategies are optimal over long-horizon planning, whereas value-based counterparts like DQN are more biased up towards the Tiger role owing to the more substantial reward signal.
