Search for long-lived particles in final states with displaced dimuon vertices in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is performed for a long-lived particle decaying into a final state that includes a pair of muons of opposite-sign electric charge, using proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 32.9 fb$^{-1}$. No significant excess over the Standard Model expectation is observed. Limits at 95% confidence level on the lifetime of the long-lived particle are presented in models of new phenomena including gauge-mediated supersymmetry or decay of the Higgs boson, $H$, to a pair of dark photons, $Z_D$. Lifetimes in the range c$τ$ = 1-2400 cm are excluded, depending on the parameters of the model. In the supersymmetric model, the lightest neutralino is the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle, with a relatively long lifetime due to its weak coupling to the gravitino, the lightest supersymmetric particle. The lifetime limits are determined for very light gravitino mass and various assumptions for the neutralino mass in the range 300 GeV to 1000 GeV. In the dark photon model, the lifetime limits are interpreted as exclusion contours in the plane of the coupling between the $Z_D$ and the Standard Model $Z$ boson versus the $Z_D$ mass (in the range 20-60 GeV), for various assumptions for the $H\rightarrow Z_D Z_D$ branching fraction.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in decays of $W$ bosons produced in 13 TeV $pp$ collisions using prompt and displaced signatures with the ATLAS detector

The problems of neutrino masses, matter-antimatter asymmetry, and dark matter could be successfully addressed by postulating right-handed neutrinos with Majorana masses below the electroweak scale. In this work, leptonic decays of $W$ bosons extracted from 32.9 fb$^{-1}$ to 36.1 fb$^{-1}$ of 13 TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC are used to search for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) that are produced through mixing with muon or electron neutrinos. The search is conducted using the ATLAS detector in both prompt and displaced leptonic decay signatures. The prompt signature requires three leptons produced at the interaction point (either $μμe$ or $e eμ$) with a veto on same-flavour opposite-charge topologies. The displaced signature comprises a prompt muon from the $W$ boson decay and the requirement of a dilepton vertex (either $μμ$ or $μe$) displaced in the transverse plane by 4-300 mm from the interaction point. The search sets constraints on the HNL mixing to muon and electron neutrinos for HNL masses in the range 4.5-50 GeV.

Search for bottom-squark pair production with the ATLAS detector in final states containing Higgs bosons, $b$-jets and missing transverse momentum

The result of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the bottom quark ($\tilde{b}_{1}$) using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton data collected at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV by the ATLAS detector is reported. In the supersymmetric scenarios considered both of the bottom-squarks decay into a $b$-quark and the second-lightest neutralino, $\tilde{b}_{1} \rightarrow b + \tildeχ^{0}_{2}$. Each $\tildeχ^{0}_{2}$ is assumed to subsequently decay with 100% branching ratio into a Higgs boson ($h$) like the one in the Standard Model and the lightest neutralino: $\tildeχ^{0}_{2} \rightarrow h + \tildeχ^{0}_{1}$. The $\tildeχ^{0}_{1}$ is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and is stable. Two signal mass configurations are targeted: the first has a constant LSP mass of 60 GeV; and the second has a constant mass difference between the $\tildeχ^{0}_{2}$ and $\tildeχ^{0}_{1}$ of 130 GeV. The final states considered contain no charged leptons, three or more $b$-jets, and large missing transverse momentum. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model background expectation is observed in any of the signal regions considered. Limits at the 95% confidence level are placed in the supersymmetric models considered, and bottom-squarks with mass up to 1.5 TeV are excluded.

Measurement of $J/ψ$ production in association with a $W^\pm$ boson with $pp$ data at 8 TeV

A measurement of the production of a prompt $J/ψ$ meson in association with a $W^\pm$ boson with $W^\pm \rightarrow μν$ and $J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+ μ^-$ is presented for $J/ψ$ transverse momenta in the range 8.5-150 GeV and rapidity $|y_{J/ψ}|<2.1$ using ATLAS data recorded in 2012 at the LHC. The data were taken at a proton-proton centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$. The ratio of the prompt $J/ψ$ plus $W^{\pm}$ cross-section to the inclusive $W^{\pm}$ cross-section is presented as a differential measurement as a function of $J/ψ$ transverse momenta and compared with theoretical predictions using different double-parton-scattering cross-sections.

ATLAS $b$-jet identification performance and efficiency measurement with $t\bar{t}$ events in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

The algorithms used by the ATLAS Collaboration during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider to identify jets containing $b$-hadrons are presented. The performance of the algorithms is evaluated in the simulation and the efficiency with which these algorithms identify jets containing $b$-hadrons is measured in collision data. The measurement uses a likelihood-based method in a sample of highly enriched in $t\bar{t}$ events. The topology of the $t \to W b$ decays is exploited to simultaneously measure both the jet flavour composition of the sample and the efficiency in a transverse momentum range from 20 GeV to 600 GeV. The efficiency measurement is subsequently compared with that predicted by the simulation. The data used in this measurement, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 80.5 fb$^{-1}$, were collected in proton-proton collisions during the years 2015 to 2017 at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV. By simultaneously extracting both the efficiency and jet flavour composition, this measurement significantly improves the precision compared to previous results, with uncertainties ranging from 1% to 8% depending on the jet transverse momentum.

Measurement of flow harmonics correlations with mean transverse momentum in lead-lead and proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

To assess the properties of the quark-gluon plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions, the ATLAS experiment at the LHC measures a correlation between the mean transverse momentum and the magnitudes of the flow harmonics. The analysis uses data samples of lead-lead and proton-lead collisions obtained at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV, corresponding to total integrated luminosities of $22 ~μb^{-1}$ and $28~nb^{-1}$, respectively. The measurement is performed using a modified Pearson correlation coefficient with the charged-particle tracks on an event-by-event basis. The modified Pearson correlation coefficients for the $2^{nd}$-, 3$^{rd}$-, and 4$^{th}$-order harmonics are measured as a function of event centrality quantified as the number of charged particles or the number of nucleons participating in the collision. The measurements are performed for several intervals of the charged-particle transverse momentum. The correlation coefficients for all studied harmonics exhibit a strong centrality evolution in the lead-lead collisions, which only weakly depends on the charged-particle momentum range. In the proton-lead collisions, the modified Pearson correlation coefficient measured for the second harmonics shows only weak centrality dependence. The data is qualitatively described by the predictions based on the hydrodynamical model.

Measurements of top-quark pair differential and double-differential cross-sections in the $\ell$+jets channel with $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV using the ATLAS detector

Single- and double-differential cross-section measurements are presented for the production of top-quark pairs, in the lepton + jets channel at particle and parton level. Two topologies, resolved and boosted, are considered and the results are presented as a function of several kinematic variables characterising the top and $t\bar{t}$ system and jet multiplicities. The study was performed using data from $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. Due to the large $t\bar{t}$ cross-section at the LHC, such measurements allow a detailed study of the properties of top-quark production and decay, enabling precision tests of several Monte Carlo generators and fixed-order Standard Model predictions. Overall, there is good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the data.

Measurement of $K_S^0$ and $Λ^0$ production in $t \bar{t}$ dileptonic events in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of $K_S^0$ and $Λ^0$ production in $t\bar{t}$ final states have been performed. They are based on a data sample with integrated luminosity of 4.6 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, collected in 2011 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Neutral strange particles are separated into three classes, depending on whether they are contained in a jet, with or without a $b$-tag, or not associated with a selected jet. The aim is to look for differences in their main kinematic distributions. A comparison of data with several Monte Carlo simulations using different hadronisation and fragmentation schemes, colour reconnection models and different tunes for the underlying event has been made. The production of neutral strange particles in $t\bar{t}$ dileptonic events is found to be well described by current Monte Carlo models for $K_S^0$ and $Λ^0$ production within jets, but not for those produced outside jets.

Measurement of the top-quark mass in $t\bar{t}+1$-jet events collected with the ATLAS detector in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV

A determination of the top-quark mass is presented using 20.2 $\text{fb}^{-1}$ of 8 TeV proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider and collected by the ATLAS experiment. The normalised differential cross section of top-quark pair production in association with an energetic jet is measured in the lepton+jets final state and unfolded to parton and particle levels. The unfolded distribution at parton level can be described using next-to-leading-order QCD predictions in terms of either the top-quark pole mass or the running mass as defined in the (modified) minimal subtraction scheme. A comparison between the experimental distribution and the theoretical prediction allows the top-quark mass to be extracted in the two schemes. The value obtained for the pole-mass scheme is: \[ m_t^{\text{pole}} = 171.1 \pm 0.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.9 (\text{syst}) \substack{+0.7\\ -0.3} (\text{theo}) \text{ GeV}. \] The extracted value in the running-mass scheme is: \[ m_t(m_t) = 162.9 \pm 0.5 (\text{stat}) \pm 1.0 (\text{syst}) \substack{+2.1\\ -1.2} (\text{theo}) \text{ GeV}. \] The results for the top-quark mass using the two schemes are consistent, when translated from one scheme to the other.

Electron and photon performance measurements with the ATLAS detector using the 2015-2017 LHC proton-proton collision data

This paper describes the reconstruction of electrons and photons with the ATLAS detector, as employed for measurements and searches exploiting the complete LHC Run 2 dataset. An improved energy clustering algorithm is introduced, and its implications for the measurement and identification of electrons and photons are discussed in detail. Corrections and calibrations that affect performance, including energy calibration, identification and isolation efficiencies, and the measurement of the charge of reconstructed electron candidates are determined using up to 81 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV between 2015 and 2017.

Properties of jet fragmentation using charged particles measured with the ATLAS detector in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

This paper presents a measurement of quantities related to the formation of jets from high-energy quarks and gluons (fragmentation). Jets with transverse momentum 100 GeV $ 500$ MeV and $|η| < 2.5$ are used to probe the detailed structure of the jet. The fragmentation properties of the more forward and the more central of the two leading jets from each event are studied. The data are unfolded to correct for detector resolution and acceptance effects. Comparisons with parton shower Monte Carlo generators indicate that existing models provide a reasonable description of the data across a wide range of phase space, but there are also significant differences. Furthermore, the data are interpreted in the context of quark- and gluon-initiated jets by exploiting the rapidity dependence of the jet flavor fraction. A first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity using model-independent jet labels (topic modeling) provides a promising alternative to traditional quark and gluon extractions using input from simulation. The simulations provide a reasonable description of the quark-like data across the jet $p_T$ range presented in this measurement, but the gluon-like data have systematically fewer charged particles than the simulations.

Measurement of distributions sensitive to the underlying event in inclusive $Z$-boson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents measurements of charged-particle distributions sensitive to the properties of the underlying event in events containing a $Z$ boson decaying into a muon pair. The data were obtained using the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3.2 fb$^{-1}$. Distributions of the charged-particle multiplicity and of the charged-particle transverse momentum are measured in regions of the azimuth defined relative to the $Z$ boson direction. The measured distributions are compared with the predictions of various Monte Carlo generators which implement different underlying-event models. The Monte Carlo model predictions qualitatively describe the data well, but with some significant discrepancies.

Search for flavour-changing neutral currents in processes with one top quark and a photon using 81 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment

A search for flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) events via the coupling of a top quark, a photon, and an up or charm quark is presented using 81 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data taken at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events with a photon, an electron or muon, a $b$-tagged jet, and missing transverse momentum are selected. A neural network based on kinematic variables differentiates between events from signal and background processes. The data are consistent with the background-only hypothesis, and limits are set on the strength of the $tqγ$ coupling in an effective field theory. These are also interpreted as 95% CL upper limits on the cross section for FCNC $tγ$ production via a left-handed (right-handed) $tuγ$ coupling of 36 fb (78 fb) and on the branching ratio for $t\rightarrow γu$ of $2.8\times 10^{-5}$ ($6.1\times 10^{-5}$). In addition, they are interpreted as 95% CL upper limits on the cross section for FCNC $tγ$ production via a left-handed (right-handed) $tcγ$ coupling of 40 fb (33 fb) and on the branching ratio for $t\rightarrow γc$ of $22\times 10^{-5}$ ($18\times 10^{-5}$).

Dijet azimuthal correlations and conditional yields in $pp$ and $p$+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a measurement of forward-forward and forward-central dijet azimuthal angular correlations and conditional yields in proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-lead ($p$+Pb) collisions as a probe of the nuclear gluon density in regions where the fraction of the average momentum per nucleon carried by the parton entering the hard scattering is low. In these regions, gluon saturation can modify the rapidly increasing parton distribution function of the gluon. The analysis utilizes 25 pb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ data and 360 $μ\mathrm{b}^{-1}$ of $p$+Pb data, both at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, collected in 2015 and 2016, respectively, with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the center-of-mass frame of the nucleon-nucleon system in the rapidity range between $-$4.0 and 4.0 using the two highest transverse momentum jets in each event, with the highest transverse momentum jet restricted to the forward rapidity range. No significant broadening of azimuthal angular correlations is observed for forward-forward or forward-central dijets in $p$+Pb compared to $pp$ collisions. For forward-forward jet pairs in the proton-going direction, the ratio of conditional yields in $p$+Pb collisions to those in $pp$ collisions is suppressed by approximately 20%, with no significant dependence on the transverse momentum of the dijet system. No modification of conditional yields is observed for forward-central dijets.

Measurement of $W^\pm$ boson production in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of $W^\pm$ boson production in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV is reported using data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $0.49\;\mathrm{nb^{-1}}$. The $W^\pm$ bosons are reconstructed in the electron or muon leptonic decay channels. Production yields of leptonically decaying $W^\pm$ bosons, normalised by the total number of minimum-bias events and the nuclear thickness function, are measured within a fiducial region defined by the detector acceptance and the main kinematic requirements. These normalised yields are measured separately for $W^+$ and $W^-$ bosons, and are presented as a function of the absolute value of pseudorapidity of the charged lepton and of the collision centrality. The lepton charge asymmetry is also measured as a function of the absolute value of lepton pseudorapidity. In addition, nuclear modification factors are calculated using the $W^\pm$ boson production cross-sections measured in $pp$ collisions. The results are compared with predictions based on next-to-leading-order calculations with CT14 parton distribution functions as well as with predictions obtained with the EPPS16 and nCTEQ15 nuclear parton distribution functions. No dependence of normalised production yields on centrality and a good agreement with predictions are observed for mid-central and central collisions. For peripheral collisions, the data agree with predictions within 1.7 (0.9) standard deviations for $W^-$ ($W^+$) bosons.

Identification of boosted Higgs bosons decaying into $b$-quark pairs with the ATLAS detector at 13 TeV

This paper describes a study of techniques for identifying Higgs bosons at high transverse momenta decaying into bottom-quark pairs, $H \rightarrow b\bar{b}$, for proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. These decays are reconstructed from calorimeter jets found with the anti-$k_{t}$ $R = 1.0$ jet algorithm. To tag Higgs bosons, a combination of requirements is used: $b$-tagging of $R = 0.2$ track-jets matched to the large-$R$ calorimeter jet, and requirements on the jet mass and other jet substructure variables. The Higgs boson tagging efficiency and corresponding multijet and hadronic top-quark background rejections are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. Several benchmark tagging selections are defined for different signal efficiency targets. The modelling of the relevant input distributions used to tag Higgs bosons is studied in 36 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected in 2015 and 2016 using $g\to b\bar{b}$ and $Z(\rightarrow b\bar{b})γ$ event selections in data. Both processes are found to be well modelled within the statistical and systematic uncertainties.

A search for an excited muon decaying to a muon and two jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A new search signature for excited leptons is explored. Excited muons are sought in the channel $pp \to μμ^* \to μμ\textrm{ jet jet}$, assuming both the production and decay occur via a contact interaction. The analysis is based on 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV taken with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No evidence of excited muons is found, and limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the cross section times branching ratio as a function of the excited-muon mass $m_{μ^*}$. For $m_{μ^*}$ between 1.3 TeV and 3.0 TeV, the upper limit on $σB(μ^* \to μq \bar{q}$) is between 0.6 and 1 fb. Limits on $σB$ are converted to lower bounds on the compositeness scale $Λ$. In the limiting case $Λ= m_{μ^*}$, excited muons with a mass below 2.9 TeV are excluded. With the same model assumptions, these limits at larger $μ^*$ masses improve upon previous limits from traditional searches based on the gauge-mediated decay $μ^* \to μγ$.

Measurement of fiducial and differential $W^+W^-$ production cross-sections at $\sqrt{s}=$13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A measurement of fiducial and differential cross-sections for $W^+W^-$ production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$13 TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36.1$ fb$^{-1}$ is presented. Events with one electron and one muon are selected, corresponding to the decay of the diboson system as $WW\rightarrow e^{\pm}νμ^{\mp}ν$. To suppress top-quark background, events containing jets with a transverse momentum exceeding 35 GeV are not included in the measurement phase space. The fiducial cross-section, six differential distributions and the cross-section as a function of the jet-veto transverse momentum threshold are measured and compared with several theoretical predictions. Constraints on anomalous electroweak gauge boson self-interactions are also presented in the framework of a dimension-six effective field theory.
