Measurement of $b$-quark fragmentation properties in jets using the decay $B^{\pm} \to J/ψK^{\pm}$ in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

The fragmentation properties of jets containing $b$-hadrons are studied using charged $B$ mesons in 139 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during the period from 2015 to 2018. The $B$ mesons are reconstructed using the decay of $B^{\pm}$ into $J/ψK^{\pm}$, with the $J/ψ$ decaying into a pair of muons. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-$k_t$ algorithm with radius parameter $R=0.4$. The measurement determines the longitudinal and transverse momentum profiles of the reconstructed $B$ hadrons with respect to the axes of the jets to which they are geometrically associated. These distributions are measured in intervals of the jet transverse momentum, ranging from 50 GeV to above 100 GeV. The results are corrected for detector effects and compared with several Monte Carlo predictions using different parton shower and hadronisation models. The results for the longitudinal and transverse profiles provide useful inputs to improve the description of heavy-flavour fragmentation in jets.

Search for new phenomena in three- or four-lepton events in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search with minimal model dependence for physics beyond the Standard Model in events featuring three or four leptons ($3\ell$ and $4\ell$, $\ell = e,μ$) is presented. The analysis aims to be sensitive to a wide range of potential new-physics theories simultaneously. This analysis uses data from $pp$ collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and recorded with the ATLAS detector, corresponding to the full Run 2 dataset of 139 fb$^{-1}$. The $3\ell$ and $4\ell$ phase space is divided into 22 event categories according to the number of leptons in the event, the missing transverse momentum, the invariant mass of the leptons, and the presence of leptons originating from a $Z$-boson candidate. These event categories are analysed independently for the presence of deviations from the Standard Model. No statistically significant deviations from the Standard Model predictions are observed. Upper limits for all signal regions are reported in terms of the visible cross-section.

Search for associated production of a $Z$ boson with an invisibly decaying Higgs boson or dark matter candidates at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for invisible decays of the Higgs boson as well as searches for dark matter candidates, produced together with a leptonically decaying $Z$ boson, are presented. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, delivered by the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ and recorded by the ATLAS experiment. Assuming Standard Model cross-sections for $ZH$ production, the observed (expected) upper limit on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to invisible particles is found to be 19% (19%) at the 95% confidence level. Exclusion limits are also set for simplified dark matter models and two-Higgs-doublet models with an additional pseudoscalar mediator.

Measurement of the nuclear modification factor for muons from charm and bottom hadrons in Pb+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Heavy-flavour hadron production provides information about the transport properties and microscopic structure of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A measurement of the muons from semileptonic decays of charm and bottom hadrons produced in Pb+Pb and $pp$ collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The Pb+Pb data were collected in 2015 and 2018 with sampled integrated luminosities of $208~\mathrm{μb}^{-1}$ and $38~\mathrm{μb^{-1}}$, respectively, and $pp$ data with a sampled integrated luminosity of $1.17~\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ were collected in 2017. Muons from heavy-flavour semileptonic decays are separated from the light-flavour hadronic background using the momentum imbalance between the inner detector and muon spectrometer measurements, and muons originating from charm and bottom decays are further separated via the muon track's transverse impact parameter. Differential yields in Pb+Pb collisions and differential cross sections in $pp$ collisions for such muons are measured as a function of muon transverse momentum from 4 GeV to 30 GeV in the absolute pseudorapidity interval $|η| < 2$. Nuclear modification factors for charm and bottom muons are presented as a function of muon transverse momentum in intervals of Pb+Pb collision centrality. The measured nuclear modification factors quantify a significant suppression of the yields of muons from decays of charm and bottom hadrons, with stronger effects for muons from charm hadron decays.

Emulating the impact of additional proton-proton interactions in the ATLAS simulation by pre-sampling sets of inelastic Monte Carlo events

The accurate simulation of additional interactions at the ATLAS experiment for the analysis of proton-proton collisions delivered by the Large Hadron Collider presents a significant challenge to the computing resources. During the LHC Run (2015-2018) there were up to 70 inelastic interactions per bunch crossing, which need to be accounted for in Monte Carlo (MC) production. In this document, a new method to account for these additional interactions in the simulation chain is described. Instead of sampling the inelastic interactions and adding their energy deposits to a hard-scatter interaction one-by-one, the inelastic interactions are presampled, independent of the hard scatter, and stored as combined events. Consequently, for each hard-scatter interaction only one such presampled event needs to be added as part of the simulation chain. For the Run 2 simulation chain, with an average of 35 interactions per bunch crossing, this new method provides a substantial reduction in MC production CPU needs of around 20%, while reproducing the properties of the reconstructed quantities relevant for physics analyses with good accuracy.

Exclusive dimuon production in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with ATLAS

Exclusive dimuon production in ultraperipheral collisions (UPC), resulting from photon-photon interactions in the strong electromagnetic fields of colliding high-energy lead nuclei, $\mathrm{PbPb}(γγ) \rightarrow μ^+μ^- (\mathrm{Pb}^{(\star)}\mathrm{Pb}^{(\star)} )$, is studied using $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{int}} = 0.48$ nb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV lead-lead collision data at the LHC with the ATLAS detector. Dimuon pairs are measured in the fiducial region $p_{\mathrm{T}μ} > 4$ GeV, $|η_μ| < 2.4$, invariant mass $m_{μμ} > 10$ GeV, and $p_{\mathrm{T,μμ}} < 2$ GeV. The primary background from single-dissociative processes is extracted from the data using a template fitting technique. Differential cross sections are presented as a function of $m_{μμ}$, absolute pair rapidity ($|y_{μμ}|$), scattering angle in the dimuon rest frame ($|\cos \vartheta^{\star}_{μμ}|$) and the colliding photon energies. The total cross section of the UPC $γγ\rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-}$ process in the fiducial volume is measured to be $σ_{\mathrm{fid}}^{μμ} = 34.1 \! \pm \! 0.3 \mathrm{(stat.)} \! \pm \! 0.7 \mathrm{(syst.)}$ $μ\mathrm{b}$. Generally good agreement is found with calculations from STARlight, which incorporate the leading-order Breit-Wheeler process with no final-state effects, albeit differences between the measurements and theoretical expectations are observed. In particular, the measured cross sections at larger $|y_{μμ}|$ are found to be about 10-20% larger in data than in the calculations, suggesting the presence of larger fluxes of photons in the initial state. Modification of the dimuon cross sections in the presence of forward and/or backward neutron production is also studied and is found to be associated with a harder incoming photon spectrum, consistent with expectations.

Search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into $b\bar{b}$ and missing transverse momentum in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the exotic decay of the Higgs boson ($H$) into a $b\bar{b}$ resonance plus missing transverse momentum is described. The search is performed with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using 139 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV. The search targets events from $ZH$ production in an NMSSM scenario where $H \rightarrow \tildeχ^{0}_{2}\tildeχ^{0}_{1}$, with $\tildeχ^{0}_{2} \rightarrow {a} \tildeχ^{0}_{1}$, where $a$ is a light pseudoscalar Higgs boson and $\tildeχ^{0}_{1,2}$ are the two lightest neutralinos. The decay of the $a$ boson into a pair of $b$-quarks results in a peak in the dijet invariant mass distribution. The final-state signature consists of two leptons, two or more jets, at least one of which is identified as originating from a $b$-quark, and missing transverse momentum. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations and upper limits are set on the product of cross section times branching ratio for a three-dimensional scan of the masses of the $\tildeχ^{0}_{2}$, $\tildeχ^{0}_{1}$ and $a$ boson.

Search for bottom-squark pair production in $pp$ collision events at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with hadronically decaying $τ$-leptons, $b$-jets and missing transverse momentum using the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of bottom squarks in events with hadronically decaying $τ$-leptons, $b$-tagged jets and large missing transverse momentum is presented. The analyzed dataset is based on proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018, and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. The observed data are compatible with the expected Standard Model background. Results are interpreted in a simplified model where each bottom squark is assumed to decay into the second-lightest neutralino $\tilde χ_2^0$ and a bottom quark, with $\tilde χ_2^0$ decaying into a Higgs boson and the lightest neutralino $\tilde χ_1^0$. The search focuses on final states where at least one Higgs boson decays into a pair of hadronically decaying $τ$-leptons. This allows the acceptance and thus the sensitivity to be significantly improved relative to the previous results at low masses of the $\tilde χ_2^0$, where bottom-squark masses up to 850 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level, assuming a mass difference of 130 GeV between $\tilde χ_2^0$ and $\tilde χ_1^0$. Model-independent upper limits are also set on the cross section of processes beyond the Standard Model.

Search for heavy resonances decaying into a pair of $Z$ bosons in the $\ell^+\ell^-\ell'^+\ell'^-$ and $\ell^+\ell^-ν\barν$ final states using 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy resonances decaying into a pair of $Z$ bosons leading to $\ell^+\ell^-\ell'^+\ell'^-$ and $\ell^+\ell^-ν\barν$ final states, where $\ell$ stands for either an electron or a muon, is presented. The search uses proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected from 2015 to 2018 that corresponds to the full integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider. Different mass ranges spanning 200 GeV to 2000 GeV for the hypothetical resonances are considered, depending on the final state and model. In the absence of a significant observed excess, the results are interpreted as upper limits on the production cross section of a spin-0 or spin-2 resonance. The upper limits for the spin-0 resonance are translated to exclusion contours in the context of Type-I and Type-II two-Higgs-doublet models, and the limits for the spin-2 resonance are used to constrain the Randall--Sundrum model with an extra dimension giving rise to spin-2 graviton excitations.

Determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton from ATLAS measurements of differential $W^\pm$ and $Z$ boson production in association with jets

This article presents a new set of proton parton distribution functions, ATLASepWZVjet20, produced in an analysis at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. The new data sets considered are the measurements of $W^+$ and $W^-$ boson and $Z$ boson production in association with jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 8~\mathrm{TeV}$ performed by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC with integrated luminosities of $20.2~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ and $19.9~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, respectively. The analysis also considers the ATLAS measurements of differential $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson production at $\sqrt{s} = 7~\mathrm{TeV}$ with an integrated luminosity of $4.6~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ and deep-inelastic-scattering data from $e^{\pm}p$ collisions at the HERA accelerator. An improved determination of the sea-quark densities at high Bjorken $x$ is shown, while confirming a strange-quark density similar in size to the up- and down-sea-quark densities in the range $x \lesssim 0.02$ found by previous ATLAS analyses.

Search for lepton-flavor-violation in $Z$-boson decays with $τ$-leptons with the ATLAS detector

A search for lepton-flavor-violating $Z\to eτ$ and $Z\toμτ$ decays with $pp$ collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. This analysis uses 139 fb$^{-1}$ of Run 2 $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and is combined with the results of a similar ATLAS search in the final state in which the $τ$-lepton decays hadronically, using the same data set as well as Run 1 data. The addition of leptonically decaying $τ$-leptons significantly improves the sensitivity reach for $Z\to\ellτ$ decays. The $Z\to\ellτ$ branching fractions are constrained in this analysis to $\mathcal{B}(Z\to eτ)<7.0\times10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(Z\to μτ)<7.2\times10^{-6}$ at 95% confidence level. The combination with the previously published analyses sets the strongest constraints to date: $\mathcal{B}(Z\to eτ)<5.0\times10^{-6}$ and $\mathcal{B}(Z\to μτ)<6.5\times10^{-6}$ at 95% confidence level.

Measurement of the $c$-jet mistagging efficiency in $t\bar{t}$ events using $pp$ collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected with the ATLAS detector

A technique is presented to measure the efficiency with which $c$-jets are mistagged as b-jets (mistagging efficiency) using $t\bar{t}$ events, where one of the $W$ bosons decays into an electron or muon and a neutrino and the other decays into a quark-antiquark pair. The measurement utilises the relatively large and known $W\to cs$ branching ratio, which allows a measurement to be made in an inclusive $c$-jet sample. The data sample used was collected by the ATLAS detector at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$. Events are reconstructed using a kinematic likelihood technique which selects the mapping between jets and $t\bar{t}$ decay products that yields the highest likelihood value. The distribution of the $b$-tagging discriminant for jets from the hadronic $W$ decays in data is compared with that in simulation to extract the mistagging efficiency as a function of jet transverse momentum. The total uncertainties are in the range 3%-17%. The measurements generally agree with those in simulation but there are some differences in the region corresponding to the most stringent $b$-jet tagging requirement.

Search for single top-quark production via flavour changing neutral currents at 8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for single top-quark production via flavour-changing neutral current processes from gluon plus up- or charm-quark initial states in proton-proton collisions at the LHC is presented. Data collected with the ATLAS detector in 2012 at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{-1}$ are used. Candidate events for a top quark decaying into a lepton, a neutrino and a jet are selected and classified into signal- and background-like candidates using a neural network. No signal is observed and an upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the $t \rightarrow \ellνb$ branching fraction is set. The observed 95% CL limit is $σ_{qg \rightarrow t} \times \mathcal{B}(t \rightarrow Wb) \times \mathcal{B}(W \rightarrow \ell ν) < 3.4$ pb and the expected 95% CL limit is $σ_{qg \rightarrow t} \times \mathcal{B}(t \rightarrow Wb) \times \mathcal{B}(W \rightarrow \ell ν) < 2.9$ pb. The observed limit can be interpreted as upper limits on the coupling constants of the flavour-changing neutral current interactions divided by the scale of new physics $κ_{ugt}/Λ< 10 \times 10^{-3}$ TeV$^{-1}$ and $κ_{cgt}/Λ< 23 \times 10^{-3}$ TeV$^{-1}$ and on the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(t \rightarrow ug) < 1.2 \times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(t \rightarrow cg) < 6.4 \times 10^{-4}$.

Search for new phenomena in $pp$ collisions in final states with tau leptons, $b$-jets, and missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector

A search for new phenomena in final states with hadronically decaying tau leptons, $b$-jets, and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analyzed dataset comprises $pp$~collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt s = 13$ TeV with an integrated luminosity of 139/fb, delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector from 2015 to 2018. The observed data are compatible with the expected Standard Model background. The results are interpreted in simplified models for two different scenarios. The first model is based on supersymmetry and considers pair production of top squarks, each of which decays into a $b$-quark, a neutrino and a tau slepton. Each tau slepton in turn decays into a tau lepton and a nearly massless gravitino. Within this model, top-squark masses up to 1.4 TeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level over a wide range of tau-slepton masses. The second model considers pair production of leptoquarks with decays into third-generation leptons and quarks. Depending on the branching fraction into charged leptons, leptoquarks with masses up to around 1.25 TeV can be excluded at the 95% confidence level for the case of scalar leptoquarks and up to 1.8 TeV (1.5 TeV) for vector leptoquarks in a Yang--Mills (minimal-coupling) scenario. In addition, model-independent upper limits are set on the cross section of processes beyond the Standard Model.

Operation and performance of the ATLAS semiconductor tracker in LHC Run 2

The semiconductor tracker (SCT) is one of the tracking systems for charged particles in the ATLAS detector. It consists of 4088 silicon strip sensor modules. During Run 2 (2015$-$2018) the Large Hadron Collider delivered an integrated luminosity of 156 fb$^{-1}$ to the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass $pp$ collision energy of 13 TeV. The instantaneous luminosity and pile-up conditions were far in excess of those assumed in the original design of the SCT detector. Due to improvements to the data acquisition system, the SCT operated stably throughout Run 2. It was available for 99.9% of the integrated luminosity and achieved a data-quality efficiency of 99.85%. Detailed studies have been made of the leakage current in SCT modules and the evolution of the full depletion voltage, which are used to study the impact of radiation damage to the modules.

Search for Higgs boson decays into a pair of pseudoscalar particles in the $bbμμ$ final state with the ATLAS detector in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

This paper presents a search for decays of the Higgs boson with a mass of 125 GeV into a pair of new pseudoscalar particles, $H\rightarrow aa$, where one $a$-boson decays into a $b$-quark pair and the other into a muon pair. The search uses 139 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV recorded between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. A narrow dimuon resonance is searched for in the invariant mass spectrum between 16 GeV and 62 GeV. The largest excess of events above the Standard Model backgrounds is observed at a dimuon invariant mass of 52 GeV and corresponds to a local (global) significance of $3.3 σ$ ($1.7 σ$). Upper limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to the $bbμμ$ final state, $\mathcal{B}(H\rightarrow aa\rightarrow bbμμ)$, and are in the range $\text{(0.2-4.0)} \times 10^{-4}$, depending on the signal mass hypothesis.

Performance of the ATLAS Level-1 topological trigger in Run 2

During LHC Run 2 (2015-2018) the ATLAS Level-1 topological trigger allowed efficient data-taking by the ATLAS experiment at luminosities up to 2.1x10$^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, which exceeds the design value by a factor of two. The system was installed in 2016 and operated in 2017 and 2018. It uses Field Programmable Gate Array processors to select interesting events by placing kinematic and angular requirements on electromagnetic clusters, jets, $τ$-leptons, muons and the total energy. It significantly improves the background event rejection and signal event acceptance, in particular for Higgs boson and $B$-physics measurements.

Dijet resonance search with weak supervision using $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV $pp$ collisions in the ATLAS detector

This Letter describes a search for narrowly resonant new physics using a machine-learning anomaly detection procedure that does not rely on a signal simulations for developing the analysis selection. Weakly supervised learning is used to train classifiers directly on data to enhance potential signals. The targeted topology is dijet events and the features used for machine learning are the masses of the two jets. The resulting analysis is essentially a three-dimensional search $A\rightarrow BC$, for $m_A\sim\mathcal{O}(\text{TeV})$, $m_B,m_C\sim\mathcal{O}(100\text{ GeV})$ and $B,C$ are reconstructed as large-radius jets, without paying a penalty associated with a large trials factor in the scan of the masses of the two jets. The full Run 2 $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV $pp$ collision data set of 139 fb$^{-1}$ recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider is used for the search. There is no significant evidence of a localized excess in the dijet invariant mass spectrum between 1.8 and 8.2 TeV. Cross-section limits for narrow-width $A$, $B$, and $C$ particles vary with $m_A$, $m_B$, and $m_C$. For example, when $m_A=3$ TeV and $m_B\gtrsim 200$ GeV, a production cross section between 1 and 5 fb is excluded at 95% confidence level, depending on $m_C$. For certain masses, these limits are up to 10 times more sensitive than those obtained by the inclusive dijet search. These results are complementary to the dedicated searches for the case that $B$ and $C$ are Standard Model bosons.
