Precision Electroweak Measurements and Constraints on the Standard Model

This note presents constraints on Standard Model parameters using published and preliminary precision electroweak results obtained at the electron-positron colliders LEP and SLC. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably CDF and D\O\ at the Tevatron. Constraints on the input parameters of the Standard Model are derived from the combined set of results obtained in high-$Q^2$ interactions, and used to predict results in low-$Q^2$ experiments, such as atomic parity violation, M{\o}ller scattering, and neutrino-nucleon scattering. The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in 2009 are new combinations of results on the width of the W boson and the mass of the top quark.

Search for neutral Higgs bosons decaying into four taus at LEP2

A search for the production and non-standard decay of a Higgs boson, h, into four taus through intermediate pseudoscalars, a, is conducted on 683 pb-1 of data collected by the ALEPH experiment at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. No excess of events above background is observed, and exclusion limits are placed on the combined production cross section times branching ratio, \xi^2 = \sigma(e+e- --> Zh)/\sigma_{SM}(e+e- --> Zh) x B(h --> aa)x B(a --> \tau^+\tau^-)^2. For mh < 107 GeV/c2 and 4 < ma < 10 GeV/c2, \xi^2 > 1 is excluded at the 95% confidence level.

A Combination of Preliminary Electroweak Measurements and Constraints on the Standard Model

This note presents a combination of published and preliminary electroweak results from the four LEP collaborations ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL based on electron-positron collision data taken at centre-of-mass energies above the Z-pole, $130 \GeV$ to $209 \GeV$ (\LEPII), as prepared for the 2006 summer conferences. Averages are derived for di-fermion cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries, photon-pair, W-pair, Z-pair, single-W and single-Z cross sections, electroweak gauge boson couplings, W mass and width and W decay branching ratios. An investigation of the interference of photon and Z-boson exchange is presented, and colour reconnection and Bose-Einstein correlation analyses in W-pair production are combined. The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in 2005 are new preliminary combinations of final {\LEPII} results on the mass and width of the W boson. Including the precision electroweak measurements performed at the Z pole published recently, the results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably CDF and D{\O}at the Tevatron. Constraints on the input parameters of the Standard Model are derived from the results obtained in high-$Q^2$ interactions, and used to predict results in low-$Q^2$ experiments, such as atomic parity violation, M{\"o}ller scattering, and neutrino-nucleon scattering.

A Combination of Preliminary Electroweak Measurements and Constraints on the Standard Model

This note presents a combination of published and preliminary electroweak results from the four LEP collaborations and the SLD collaboration which were prepared for the 2004 summer conferences. [...] The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in summer 2003 are updates to the W branching fractions and four-fermion cross sections measured at LEP-2, and the SLD/LEP heavy-flavour results measured at the Z pole. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably the final result on the electroweak mixing angle determined in neutrino-nucleon scattering by the NuTeV collaboration, the latest result in atomic parity violation in Caesium, and the measurement of the electroweak mixing angle in Moller scattering. The parameters of the Standard Model are evaluated, first using the combined LEP electroweak measurements, and then using the full set of high-$Q^2$ electroweak results.

A Combination of Preliminary Electroweak Measurements and Constraints on the Standard Model

This note presents a combination of published and preliminary electroweak results from the four LEP collaborations and the SLD collaboration which were prepared for the 2003 summer conferences. Averages from $\Zzero$ resonance results are derived for hadronic and leptonic cross sections, the leptonic forward-backward asymmetries, the $\tau$ polarisation asymmetries, the $\bb$ and $\cc$ partial widths and forward-backward asymmetries and the $\qq$ charge asymmetry. Above the $\Zzero$ resonance, averages are derived for di-fermion cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries, photon-pair, W-pair, Z-pair, single-W and single-Z cross sections, electroweak gauge boson couplings, W mass and width and W decay branching ratios. Also, an investigation of the interference of photon and Z-boson exchange is presented, and colour reconnection and Bose-Einstein correlation analyses in W-pair production are combined. The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in summer 2002 are updates to the mass of the W boson, four-fermion cross sections and gauge couplings, all measured at LEP-2, and the LEP heavy-flavour results measured at the Z pole. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably the recent final result on the electroweak mixing angle determined in neutrino-nucleon scattering by the NuTeV collaboration and the new result in atomic parity violation in Caesium. The parameters of the Standard Model are evaluated, first using the combined LEP electroweak measurements, and then using the full set of electroweak results.

Study of hadronic final states from double tagged gammagamma events at LEP

The interaction of virtual photons is investigated using double tagged gammagamma events with hadronic final states recorded by the ALEPH experiment at e^+e^- centre-of-mass energies between 188 and 209 GeV. The measured cross section is compared to Monte Carlo models, and to next-to-leading-order QCD and BFKL calculations.

Search for stable hadronizing squarks and gluinos in e+e- collisions up to sqrt(s) = 209 GeV

Searches for stable, hadronizing scalar quarks and gluinos are performed using the data collected with the ALEPH detector at LEP. Gluon splitting into a gluino or a squark pair is searched for at centre-of-mass energies around the Z resonance, in the e+e- -> q qbar gluino gluino and q qbar squark antisquark processes. Stable squark pair production, and stop pair production with subsequent decays into a stable gluino, stop -> c gluino, are also directly searched for at centre-of-mass energies from 183 to 209 GeV. Altogether, stable hadronizing stop (sbottom) quarks are excluded up to masses of 95 (92) GeV/c2, and stable hadronizing gluinos are excluded up to 26.9 GeV/c2, at 95% confidence level. In the framework of R-parity-conserving supersymmetric models in which the gluino and the stop quark are the two lightest supersymmetric particles, a 95% C.L. lower limit of 80 GeV/c2 is set on the stop quark mass.

A measurement of the gluon splitting rate into ccbar pairs in hadronic Z decays

The rate of gluons splitting into $c \bar{c}$ pairs in hadronic $Z$ decays is measured using the data sample collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1995. The selection is based on the identification of leptons (electrons and muons) originating from semileptonic charm decays, and on the topological properties of signal events. The result derived from the selected sample is $g_{c \bar{c}}=(3.26 \pm 0.23 \rm{(stat)} \pm 0.42 \rm{(syst)}) %$

Measurement of the inclusive D*+- production in gamma-gamma collisions at LEP

The inclusive production of D$^{*\pm}$ mesons in two-photon collisions is measured with the ALEPH detector at $\epem$ centre-of-mass energies from 183$\unit{GeV}$ to 209$\unit{GeV}$. A total of $360 \pm 27$ D$^{*\pm}$ meson events were observed from an integrated luminosity of 699\unit{pb^{-1}}$. Contributions from direct and single-resolved rocesses are separated using the ratio of the transverse momentum $p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}}$ of the D$^{*\pm}$ to the visible invariant mass $W_{\mathrm{vis}}$ of the event. Differential cross sections of D$^{*\pm}$ production as functions of $p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}}$ and the pseudorapidity $|η^{\rm D^{*\pm}}| $ are measured in the range $ 2\unit{GeV}/c < p_{\rm t}^{\rm D^{*\pm}} < 12\unit{GeV}/c $ and $ |η^{\rm D^{*\pm}}| < 1.5 $. They are compared to next-to-leading order (NLO)perturbative QCD calculations. The extrapolation of the integrated visible D$^{*\pm}$ cross section to the total charm cross section, based on the Pythia Monte Carlo program, yields $ σ(\epem \to \epem \ccbar)_ {=197\unit{GeV}} = 731 \pm 74_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 47_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 157_{\mathrm{extr}} \unit{pb} $.

A Combination of Preliminary Electroweak Measurements and Constraints on the Standard Model

This note presents a combination of published and preliminary electroweak results from the four LEP collaborations and the SLD collaboration which were prepared for the 2002 summer conferences. Averages from Z resonance results are derived for hadronic and leptonic cross sections, the leptonic forward-backward asymmetries, the tau polarisation asymmetries, the b-bbar and c-cbar partial widths and forward-backward asymmetries and the q-qbar charge asymmetry. Above the Z resonance, averages are derived for di-fermion cross sections and forward-backward asymmetries, photon-pair, W-pair, Z-pair, single-W and single-Z cross sections, electroweak gauge boson couplings, W mass and width and W decay branching ratios. The main changes with respect to the experimental results presented in summer 2001 are updates to the Z-pole heavy flavour results from SLD and LEP, and new combinations of results above the Z pole. A new investigation of the interference of photon and Z-boson exchange is presented. For the first time, colour reconnection and Bose-Einstein correlation analyses in W-pair production are combined. The results are compared with precise electroweak measurements from other experiments, notably the recent final result on the electroweak mixing angle determined in neutrino-nucleon scattering by the NuTeV collaboration. The parameters of the Standard Model are evaluated, first using the combined LEP electroweak measurements, and then using the full set of electroweak results.

Search for Supersymmetric Particles with R-Parity Violating Decays in e+e- Collisions at sqrt{s} up to 209GeV

Searches for the pair production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a single dominant LLEbar, LQDbar or UbarDbarDbar coupling are performed using the data collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies from 189 to 209GeV. The numbers of observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation, and limits on the production cross sections and on the masses of charginos, sleptons, squarks and sneutrinos are derived.

Search for anomalous weak dipole moments of the tau lepton

The anomalous weak dipole moments of the tau lepton are measured in a data sample collected by ALEPHfrom 1990 to 1995 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 155pb-1. Tau leptons produced in the reaction e+e- -> tau+tau- at energies close to the Z mass are studied using their semileptonic decays to pi, rho, a_1 -> pi 2pi0 or a_1 -> 3 pi. The real and imaginary components of both the anomalous weak magnetic dipole moment and the CP-violating anomalous weak electric dipole moment, Re,mu_tau, Im,mu_tau, Re, d_tau and Im, d_tau, are measured simultaneously by means of a likelihood fit built from the full differential cross section. No evidence of new physics is found. The following bounds are obtained 95% CL: |Re, mu_tau | < 1.14 x 10-3, |Im}, mu_tau | < 2.65 x 10-3, |Re}, d_tau | < 0.91 x 10-3, and |Im, d_tau | < 2.01 x 10-3.

Absolute Lower Limits on the Masses of Selectrons and Sneutrinos in the MSSM

The results of searches for selectrons, charginos and neutralinos performed with the data collected by the ALEPH detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV are interpreted in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with R-parity conservation. Under the assumptions of gaugino and sfermion mass unification and no sfermion mixing, an absolute lower limit of 73 GeV/c2 is set on the mass of the lighter selectron at the 95% confidence level. Similarly, limits on the masses of the heavier selectron and of the sneutrino are set at 107 and 84 GeV/c2, respectively. Additional constraints are derived from the results of the searches for Higgs bosons. The results are also interpreted in the framework of minimal supergravity.

Search for charged Higgs bosons in e+e- collisions at energies up to sqrt(s) = 209GeV

A search for charged Higgs bosons produced in pairs is performed with data collected at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 209 GeV by ALEPH at LEP, corresponding to a total luminosity of 629 invpb. The three final states taunutaunu, taunucs and cscs are considered. No evidence for a signal is found and lower limits are set on the mass M_H+ as a function of the branching fraction B(H to taunu). In the framework of a two-Higgs-doublet model, and assuming B(H+ to taunu + B(H+ to cs) = 1 charged Higgs bosons with masses below 79.3 Gev/c2 are excluded at 95% confidence level independently of the branching ratios.
