Conformal models for hypercolumns in the primary visual cortex V1

We propose a differential geometric model of hypercolumns in the primary visual cortex V1 that combines features of the symplectic model of the primary visual cortex by A. Sarti, G. Citti and J. Petitot and of the spherical model of hypercolumns by P. Bressloff and J. Cowan. The model is based on classical results in Conformal Geometry.

Stationary disks and Green functions in almost complex domains

Using generalized Riemann maps, normal forms for almost complex domains (D, J) with singular foliations by stationary disks are defined. Such normal forms are used to construct counterexamples and to determine intrinsic conditions, under which the stationary disks are extremal disks for the Kobayashi metric or determine solutions to almost complex Monge-Ampere equation.

Super-Poincare' algebras, space-times and supergravities (I)

A new formulation of theories of supergravity as theories satisfying a generalized Principle of General Covariance is given. It is a generalization of the superspace formulation of simple 4D-supergravity of Wess and Zumino and it is designed to obtain geometric descriptions for the supergravities that correspond to the super Poincare' algebras of Alekseevsky and Cortes' classification.

The two ways of gauging the Poincare' group

A description of how a theory of gravity can be considered as a gauge theory (in the sense of Trautman) of the Poincare' group is given. As a result, it is shown that a gauge theory of this kind is consistent with the Equivalence Principle only if the Lagrangian and the constraints are preserved not only by the gauge transformations but also by an additional family of transformations, called "pseudo-translations". Explicit expressions of pseudo-translations and of their action on gravitational gauge fields are given. They are expected to be useful for geometric interpretations of their analogues in supergravity theories.

The Hermitian Connection and the Jacobi Fields of a Complex Finsler Manifold

It is proved that all invariant functions of a complex Finsler manifold can be totally recovered from the torsion and curvature of the connection introduced by Kobayashi for holomorphic vector bundles with complex Finsler structures. Equations of the geodesics and Jacobi fields of a generic complex Finsler manifold, expressed by means Kobayashi's connection, are also derived.

Kahler manifolds with large isometry group

We investigate compact Kahler manifolds, which are acted on by a semisimple compact Lie group G of isometries with one hypersurface orbit. In case of ordinary action and projectable complex structure, we set up a one to one correspondence between such manifolds and abstract models. The Ricci tensor is then computed and we fully characterize the Kahler-Einstein manifolds with an ordinary cohomogeneity one action and projectable complex structure.
