Predictions for the 4 GeV TJNAF inclusive electron scattering experiment and for FSI effects in EMC ratios

We express nuclear structure functions $F_i^A$ as generalized convolutions of the structure function of a nucleon and of a nucleus, composed of point-nucleons. In computations of the latter we include Final State Interactions and results for $F_2^A$ are compared with a few directly measured data on C and Fe. The above $F_i^A$ are primarily used for predictions of the TJNAF 89-008 inclusive scattering experiment of 4 GeV electrons on various targets. Those cover a broad angular, and correspondingly wide $x,Q^2$ range, where the nucleon-inelastic part dominates large sections of the covered kinematics. The same model has been applied to the study of hitherto neglected Final State Interaction effects in the nuclear component in EMC ratios in the region $0.85\lesssim x\lesssim 0.25$.

Some remarks on off-shell scattering in the eikonal approximation

Using the Abel inversion for the eikonal phase as function of the interaction we derive simple integral relations between half and on-shell eikonal phases. A frequently used short-range approximation for the half off-shell phase and profile appears supported by the above-mentioned relation. We work out some examples and also address the half off-shell eikonal phase pertinent to a diffractive amplitude. The latter is relevant for a calculation of selected transparencies ${\cal T}$ of nuclei for a proton, knocked-out in selected semi-inclusive (SI) $A(e,e'p)X$ reactions. Some numerical results for ${\cal T}$ are given.

Effect of $NN$-correlations on predictions of nuclear transparencies for protons, knocked-out in high $Q^2\,(e,e'p)$ reactions

We study the transparency $\cal T$ of nuclei for nucleons knocked-out in high-energy semi-inclusive $(e,e'p)$ reactions, using an improved theoretical input, discussed by Nikolaev et al. We establish that neglect of $NN$-correlations between the knocked-out and core nucleons reduces nuclear transparencies by $\approx 15 \%$ for light, to $\approx 10\%$ for heavy nuclei. About the same is predicted for transparencies, integrated over the transverse or longitudinal momentum of the outgoing proton. Hadron dynamics predicts a roughly constant $\cal T$ beyond $Q^2\approx $2 GeV$^2$, whereas for all targets the largest measured data point $Q^2$=6.7 GeV$^2$ appears to lie above that plateau. Large error bars on those data-points preclude a conclusion regarding the onset of colour transparency.

Description of inclusive scattering of few_GeV electrons from finite A nuclei and nuclear matter

We study $eA$ scattering in a model where the total nuclear structure function is a convolution of components $W_N$ for an isolated nucleon and $W_{\NA}$ for a nucleus composed of point-nucleons. $W_N$ is represented by its elastic and lowest-energy inelastic parts, while $W_{\NA}$ is computed from its asymptotic limit, supplemented by final state interactions due to binary collisions between the knocked-out and core nucleons. $(q/M)W_{\NA}$ per nucleon appears to be practically independent of mass number $A$ and momentum transfer $q$. Consequently, predicted inclusive cross sections per nucleon for given kinematic conditions hardly depend on the target and the same can be extracted from the data. Exceptions are low energy loss regions, where relatively small cross sections are shown to be sensitive to details of the single nucleon momentum distribution and to FSI, involving multiple collisions. The agreement with the data is good.

A quark-cluster description of the EMC effect (Seminar given in the 18th Course of the "International School on Nuclear Physics", 16-23/9/'94, Erice, IT. To be published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics, Vol. 34, Pergamon Press)

The response of a nucleus composed of nucleons and confined quarks is calculated in a non-relativistic cluster model and is shown to be a convolution of responses of, respectively, a nucleus with interacting point-nucleons and of a nucleon composed of quarks. We further show that the apparent off-shell energy in the expression for the nucleon structure function in Impulse Approximation does not constitue a real problem. We conjecture a generalization to the relativistic regime.

Nuclear transparencies for nucleons, knocked-out under various semi-inclusive conditions

Using hadron dynamics we calculate nuclear transparencies for protons, knocked-out in high-$Q^2$, semi-inclusive reactions. Predicted transparencies are, roughly half a standard deviation above the NE18 data. The latter contain the effects of binned proton missing momenta and mass, and of finite detector acceptances. In order to test sensitivity we compare computed transparencies without restrictions and the same with maximal cuts for missing momenta and the electron energy loss. We find hardly any variation, enabling a meaningful comparison with data and predictions based on hadron dynamics. Should discrepancies persist in high-statistics data, the above may with greater confidence be attributed to exotic components in the description of the outgoing proton.

The nuclear component of the EMC effect beyond the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation

We study the response of a nucleus composed of nucleons and confined quarks. Assuming dynamics implied by a non-relativistic cluster model, we prove that the total response is a convolution of the responses of, respectively, a nucleus with interacting point-nucleons and an isolated nucleon with confined quarks. Defining as an intermediary structure functions in terms of the non-relativistic limit of light-cone variables, we subsequently conjecture a generalization to the relativistic regime. That result contains a nuclear part with full inter-nucleon dynamics and allows the study of approximations, as are the Plane Wave Impulse Approximation and a modification of it. The framework also permits a clean treatment of the response of a moving composite nucleon in the nucleus which may be off-shell.

On the nature of the large-$q$ expansion of the response for a non-relativistic confined system

We show the equivalence of a previously derived exact expression for the response of a non-relativistic system with harmonic forces and an infinite sum of weighted $δ$-functions corresponding to the spectrum. We forward arguments, indicating that the Gersch-Rodriguez-Smith $1/q$-expansion of the response does not converge and prove that this expansion is an asymptotic series.

Inclusive scattering of electrons from nuclear matter in the few GeV range

We study Final State Interaction effects (FSI) in inclusive electron scattering of several GeV from nuclear matter. We consider separately the cases of 'elastic' and 'inelastic' knockout of respectively a nucleon and a non-nucleonic particle. For the former category FSI have been calculated, using the first cumulant approximation of a relativistic generalization of the theory of Gersch et al, including intermediate NN states states with produced hadrons. We also discuss a formal expression for the first cumulant approximation on the basis of the PWIA. FSI between an inelasticlly knocked-out particle and core nucleons are neglected. We present two scaling analyses of the data, from which the above 'inelastic' contributions have been been removed. The data expressed in a relativistic West variable show scaling of a much better quality than the same in the IA scaling variable. Predictions for inclusive cross sections in the two first cumulant versions are presented and discussed. We make a critical comparison of the above with the IA approach of Benhar et al and their results.

Generalized transparency in semi-inclusive processes

It is argued that the transparency of a medium for passage of a nucleon, knocked-out in a semi-inclusive $(e,e'p)$ reaction and subsequently scattered elastically, is not the same as the one measured in purely elastic scattering. Expressions are given for the properly generalized transparency and those are compared with recently proposed, alternative suggestions. Numerical results are presented for selected nuclear targets and kinematic conditions, applying to the Garino et al and the SLAC NE18 experiment.

Exact response of the non-relativistic harmonic oscillator

Using Green$'$s function and operator techniques we give a closed expression for the response of a non-relativistic system interacting through confining, harmonic forces. The expression for the incoherent part permits rapid evaluation of coefficients in a 1/q expansion. A comparison is made with standard approximation methods.

The response of non-relativistic confined systems

We study the non-relativistic response of a 'diquark' bound by confining forces, for which perturbation theory in the interaction fails. As non-perturbative alternatives we consider the Gersch-Rodriguez-Smith theory and a summation method. We show that, contrary to the case of singular repulsive forces, the GRS theory can generally be applied to confined systems. When expressed in the GRS-West kinematic variable y, the response has a standard asymptotic limit and calculable dominant corrections of orders 1/q,1/q. That theory therefore clearly demonstrates how constituents, confined before and after the absorption of the transferred momentum and energy, behave as asymptotically free particles. We compare the GRS results with those for a summation method for harmonic and square well confinement and also discuss the convergence of the GRS series for the response in powers of 1/q.
