The azimuthal correlation between the leading jet and the scattered lepton in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

The azimuthal correlation angle, $\Delta\phi$, between the scattered lepton and the leading jet in deep inelastic $e^{\pm}p$ scattering at HERA has been studied using data collected with the ZEUS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 318 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $326 \;\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. A measurement of jet cross sections in the laboratory frame was made in a fiducial region corresponding to photon virtuality $10 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2 < Q^2 < 350 \;\mathrm{GeV}^2$, inelasticity $0.04 < y < 0.7$, outgoing lepton energy $E_e > 10 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, lepton polar angle $140^\circ < \theta_e < 180^\circ$, jet transverse momentum $2.5 \;\mathrm{GeV} < p_\mathrm{T,jet} < 30 \;\mathrm{GeV}$, and jet pseudorapidity $-1.5 < \eta_\mathrm{jet} < 1.8$. Jets were reconstructed using the $k_\mathrm{T}$ algorithm with the radius parameter $R = 1$. The leading jet in an event is defined as the jet that carries the highest $p_\mathrm{T,jet}$. Differential cross sections, $d\sigma/d\Delta\phi$, were measured as a function of the azimuthal correlation angle in various ranges of leading-jet transverse momentum, photon virtuality and jet multiplicity. Perturbative calculations at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_{s}^2)$ accuracy successfully describe the data within the fiducial region, although a lower level of agreement is observed near $\Delta\phi \rightarrow \pi$ for events with high jet multiplicity, due to limitations of the perturbative approach in describing soft phenomena in QCD. The data are equally well described by Monte Carlo predictions that supplement leading-order matrix elements with parton showering.

Measurement of jet production in deep inelastic scattering and NNLO determination of the strong coupling at ZEUS

A new measurement of inclusive-jet cross sections in the Breit frame in neutral current deep inelastic scattering using the ZEUS detector at the HERA collider is presented. The data were taken in the years 2004 to 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of $318\,\text{GeV}$ and correspond to an integrated luminosity of $347\,\text{pb}^{-1}$. Massless jets, reconstructed using the $k_t$-algorithm in the Breit reference frame, have been measured as a function of the squared momentum transfer, $Q^2$, and the transverse momentum of the jets in the Breit frame, $p_{\perp,\text{Breit}}$. The measured jet cross sections are compared to previous measurements and to perturbative QCD predictions. The measurement has been used in a next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD analysis to perform a simultaneous determination of parton distribution functions of the proton and the strong coupling, resulting in a value of $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1142 \pm 0.0017~\text{(experimental/fit)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0007}~\text{(model/parameterisation)}$ ${}^{+0.0006}_{-0.0004}~\text{(scale)}$, whose accuracy is improved compared to similar measurements. In addition, the running of the strong coupling is demonstrated using data obtained at different scales.

Search for effective Lorentz and CPT violation using ZEUS data

Lorentz and CPT symmetry in the quark sector of the Standard Model are studied in the context of an effective field theory using ZEUS $e^{\pm} p$ data. Symmetry-violating effects can lead to time-dependent oscillations of otherwise time-independent observables, including scattering cross sections. An analysis using five years of inclusive neutral-current deep inelastic scattering events corresponding to an integrated HERA luminosity of $372\; \text{pb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 318$ Gev has been performed. No evidence for oscillations in sidereal time has been observed within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Constraints, most for the first time, are placed on 42 coefficients parameterising dominant CPT-even dimension-four and CPT-odd dimension-five spin-independent modifications to the propagation and interaction of light quarks.

Weak $\mathcal Z$-structures and one-relator groups

Motivated by the notion of boundary for hyperbolic and $CAT(0)$ groups, M. Bestvina in "Local Homology Properties of Boundaries of Groups" introduced the notion of a (weak) $\mathcal Z$-structure and (weak) $\mathcal Z$-boundary for a group $G$ of type $\mathcal F$ (i.e., having a finite $K(G,1)$ complex), with implications concerning the Novikov conjecture for $G$. Since then, some classes of groups have been shown to admit a weak $\mathcal Z$-structure (see "Weak $\mathcal Z$-structures for some classes of groups" by C.R. Guilbault for example), but the question whether or not every group of type $\mathcal F$ admits such a structure remains open. In this paper, we show that every torsion free one-relator group admits a weak $\mathcal Z$-structure, by showing that they are all properly aspherical at infinity; moreover, in the $1$-ended case the corresponding weak $\mathcal Z$-boundary has the shape of either a circle or a Hawaiian earring depending on whether the group is a virtually surface group or not. Finally, we extend this result to a wider class of groups still satisfying a Freiheitssatz property.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio $\sigma_{\psi(2S )}/\sigma_{J/\psi(1S )}$ in exclusive photoproduction at HERA

The exclusive photoproduction reactions $\gamma p \to J/\psi(1S) p$ and $\gamma p \to \psi(2S) p$ have been measured at an $ep$ centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 373 pb$^{-1}$. The measurement was made in the kinematic range $30 < W < 180$ GeV, $Q^2 < 1$ GeV$^2$ and $|t| < 1$ GeV$^2$, where $W$ is the photon--proton centre-of-mass energy, $Q^2$ is the photon virtuality and $t$ is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The decay channels used were $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, $\psi(2S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $\psi(2S) \to J/\psi(1S) \pi^+ \pi^-$ with subsequent decay $J/\psi(1S) \to \mu^+ \mu^-$. The ratio of the production cross sections, $R = \sigma_{\psi(2S)} / \sigma_{J/\psi(1S)}$, has been measured as a function of $W$ and $|t|$ and compared to previous data in photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering and with predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production, which are in reasonable agreement with the data.

Evidence for a QCD accelerator in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We report measurements of forward jets produced in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The jet-energy distributions extend to energies much larger than expected by Feynman scaling. This constitutes the first clear evidence for Feynman-scaling violations in heavy-ion collisions. Such high-energy particle production has been in models via QCD string interactions, but so far is untested by experiment. One such model calls this a hadronic accelerator. Studies with a particular heavy-ion event generator (HIJING) show that photons and mesons exhibit such very high-energy production in a heavy-ion collision, so {\it QCD accelerator} appropriately captures the physics associated with such QCD string interactions. All models other than HIJING used for hadronic interactions in the study of extensive air showers from cosmic rays either do not include these QCD string interactions, or have smaller effects from the QCD accelerator.

Azimuthal correlations in photoproduction and deep inelastic $\boldsymbol{ep}$ scattering at HERA

Collective behaviour of final-state hadrons, and multiparton interactions are studied in high-multiplicity $ep$ scattering at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=318$ GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Two- and four-particle azimuthal correlations, as well as multiplicity, transverse momentum, and pseudorapidity distributions for charged-particle multiplicities $N_{\textrm ch} \geq 20$ are measured. The dependence of two-particle correlations on the virtuality of the exchanged photon shows a clear transition from photoproduction to neutral current deep inelastic scattering. For the multiplicities studied, neither the measurements in photoproduction processes nor those in neutral current deep inelastic scattering indicate significant collective behaviour of the kind observed in high-multiplicity hadronic collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Comparisons of PYTHIA predictions with the measurements in photoproduction strongly indicate the presence of multiparton interactions from hadronic fluctuations of the exchanged photon.

A topological equivalence relation for finitely presented groups

In this paper, we consider an equivalence relation within the class of finitely presented discrete groups attending to their asymptotic topology rather than their asymptotic geometry. More precisely, we say that two finitely presented groups $G$ and $H$ are "proper $2$-equivalent" if there exist (equivalently, for all) finite $2$-dimensional CW-complexes $X$ and $Y$, with $\pi_1(X) \cong G$ and $\pi_1(Y) \cong H$, so that their universal covers $\widetilde{X}$ and $\widetilde{Y}$ are proper $2$-equivalent. It follows that this relation is coarser than the quasi-isometry relation. We point out that finitely presented groups which are $1$-ended and semistable at infinity are classified, up to proper $2$-equivalence, by their fundamental pro-group, and we study the behaviour of this relation with respect to some of the main constructions in combinatorial group theory. A (finer) similar equivalence relation may also be considered for groups of type $F_n, n \geq 3$, which captures more of the large-scale topology of the group. Finally, we pay special attention to the class of those groups $G$ which admit a finite $2$-dimensional CW-complex $X$ with $\pi_1(X) \cong G$ and whose universal cover $\widetilde{X}$ has the proper homotopy type of a $3$-manifold. We show that if such a group $G$ is $1$-ended and semistable at infinity then it is proper $2$-equivalent to either ${\mathbb Z} \times {\mathbb Z} \times {\mathbb Z}$, ${\mathbb Z} \times {\mathbb Z}$ or ${\mathbb F}_2 \times {\mathbb Z}$ (here, ${\mathbb F}_2$ is the free group on two generators). As it turns out, this applies in particular to any group $G$ fitting as the middle term of a short exact sequence of infinite finitely presented groups, thus classifying such group extensions up to proper $2$-equivalence.

Observation of Feynman scaling violations and evidence for a new resonance at RHIC

We report measurements of forward jets and dijets produced in Cu+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We also report dijet production cross sections in p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}=510$ GeV. We use the invariant dijet mass to search for indications of new particles. The p+p dijet results are compatible with string fragmentation models tuned to fit LHC data. The Cu+Au jet results far exceed Feynman scaling limits, and are compatible with models that incorporate string fusion to increase parton energy, acting as a QCD accelerator. The Cu+Au dijet results can be mostly explained by double parton scattering due to a parton flux from multiple p+p interactions with $\sqrt{s}>>\sqrt{s_{NN}}$. Further indication of the increased parton energy is obtained from evidence of single- and double-$\Upsilon$(1S) production in the forward direction in Cu+Au collisions. Finally, we report evidence for the production of a new resonance, reconstructed from its dijet decay.

Charm production in charged current deep inelastic scattering at HERA

Charm production in charged current deep inelastic scattering has been measured for the first time in $e^{\pm}p$ collisions, using data collected with the ZEUS detector at HERA, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $358 pb^{-1}$. Results are presented separately for $e^{+}p$ and $e^{-}p$ scattering at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 318 GeV$ within a kinematic phase-space region of $200 GeV^{2}<Q^{2}<60000 GeV^{2}$ and $y<0.9$, where $Q^{2}$ is the squared four-momentum transfer and $y$ is the inelasticity. The measured cross sections of electroweak charm production are consistent with expectations from the Standard Model within the large statistical uncertainties.

On irreducible triangulations of punctured and pinched surfaces

A triangulation of a punctured or pinched surface is irreducible if no edge can be shrunk without producing multiple edges or changing the topological type of the surface. The finiteness of the set of (non-isomorphic) irreducible triangulations of any punctured surface is established. Complete lists of irreducible triangulations are determined for the Möbius band (6 in number) and the pinched torus (2 in number). All the non-isomorphic combinatorial types (20 in number) of triangulations of the projective plane with up to 8 vertices are determined.

Design and Construction of a First Prototype Muon Tomography System with GEM Detectors for the Detection of Nuclear Contraband

Current radiation portal monitors at sea ports and international borders that employ standard radiation detection techniques are not very sensitive to nuclear contraband that is well shielded to absorb emanating radiation. Muon Tomography (MT) based on the measurement of multiple scattering of atmospheric cosmic ray muons traversing cargo or vehicles that contain high-Z material is a promising passive interrogation technique for solving this problem. We report on the design and construction of compact Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors for a small prototype MT station. This station will employ 10 tracking stations based on 30cm x 30cm low-mass triple-GEM detectors with 2D readout. Due to the excellent spatial resolution of GEMs it is sufficient to use a gap of only a few cm between tracking stations. Together with the compact size of the GEM detectors this allows the GEM MT station to be an order of magnitude more compact than MT stations using traditional drift tubes. We present details of the production and assembly of the GEM-based tracking stations in collaboration with CERN and the RD51 collaboration as well as the design of the initial front-end electronics and readout system.

One-relator groups and proper 3-realizability

How different is the universal cover of a given finite 2-complex from a 3-manifold (from the proper homotopy viewpoint)? Regarding this question, we recall that a finitely presented group $G$ is said to be properly 3-realizable if there exists a compact 2-polyhedron $K$ with $π_1(K) \cong G$ whose universal cover $\tilde{K}$ has the proper homotopy type of a PL 3-manifold (with boundary). In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of finitely generated one-relator groups and show that those having finitely many ends are properly 3-realizable, by describing what the fundamental pro-group looks like, showing a property of one-relator groups which is stronger than the QSF property of Brick (from the proper homotopy viewpoint) and giving an alternative proof of the fact that one-relator groups are semistable at infinity.

Amalgamated products and properly 3-realizable groups

In this paper, we show that the class of all properly 3-realizable groups is closed under amalgamated free products (and HNN-extensions) over finite groups. We recall that $G$ is said to be properly 3-realizable if there exists a compact 2-polyhedron $K$ with $\pi_1(K) \cong G$ and whose universal cover $\tilde{K}$ has the proper homotopy type of a 3-manifold (with boundary).

Spitzer observations of the Orion OB1 association: second generation dust disks at 5-10 Myr

We report new Spitzer observations of intermediate mass stars in two regions of the Orion OB1 association located in the subassociations OB1a ($\sim$10 Myr) and OB1b ($\sim$5 Myr). In a representative sample of stars earlier than F5 of both stellar groups, we find a population of stars surrounded of debris disks, without excess in the IRAC bands and without emission lines in their optical spectra, but with a varying degree of 24{\micron} excess. Comparing our samples with 24{\micron} observations of intermediate mass stars in other stellar groups, spanning a range of ages from 2.5 Myr to 150 Myr, we find that debris disks are more frequent and have larger 24{\micron} excess at 10 Myr (OB1a). This trend agrees with predictions of models of evolution of solids in the outer regions of disks ($>$30 AU), where large icy objects ($\sim$1000 Km) begin to form at $\sim$10 Myr; the presence of these objects in the disk initiates a collisional cascade, producing enough dust particles to explain the relatively large 24 {\micron} excess observed in OB1a. The dust luminosity observed in the stellar groups older than 10 Myr declines roughly as predicted by collisional cascade models. Combining Spitzer observations, optical spectra and 2MASS data, we found a new Herbig Ae/Be star (HD290543) and a star (HD36444) with a large 24 {\micron} excess, both in OB1b. This last object could be explained as a intermediate stage between HAeBe and true debris systems or as a massive debris disk produced by a collision between two large objects ($>$1000 Km).
