Evidence of orbital mixing upon ionization via Cooper minimum photoelectron dynamics in epichlorohydrin. Experiment and Theory

A peculiar electron correlation effect, leading to orbital rotation upon ionization, theoretically predicted long ago, was never experimentally characterized. The effect is expected to appear prominently in the photoionization of chiral molecules, due to the lack of symmetry constraints to wave-functions mixing. This is observed to have a profound effect on the photoelectron dynamics, as here demonstrated by investigating \b{eta} asymmetry parameters and partial cross-section observables in the Cl 3p Cooper minimum region of epichlorohydrin, a chiral prototype system. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with tunable synchrotron radiation allowed measuring Cooper minimum $\beta$ oscillations, which were observed for solely two valence photoionization channels. The nature and number of channels exhibiting such dynamical behavior, along with the extent of the observed oscillation amplitudes, could not be accounted for by predictions based on Hartree-Fock (HF) and Density Functional Theory (DFT). These features could only be explained by incorporating correlation effects, which mix single-hole configurations of identical symmetry, in the characterization of the four lowest-lying molecular cation states, via equation-of-motion coupled cluster singles and doubles Dyson orbitals.

The photochemical ring-opening reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadiene: complex dynamical evolution of the reactive state

The photochemically induced ring-opening isomerization reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD) to 1,3,5-hexatriene (HT) is a textbook example of a pericyclic reaction, and has been amply investigated with advanced spectroscopic techniques. The generally accepted description of the isomerization pathway starts with a valence excitation to the lowest-lying bright state, followed by a passage through a conical intersection to a dark doubly excited state, and finally a branching between either the return to the ground state of the cyclic molecule or the actual ring-opening reaction leading to the open-chain isomer. It was traditionally assumed that the dark reactive state corresponds to the second excited state of CHD at the Franck-Condon geometry. Here in a joint experimental and computational effort we demonstrate that the evolution of the excitation-deexcitation process is much more complex than usually described. In particular, we show that an initially high-lying electronic state smoothly decreasing in energy along the reaction path plays a key role in the ring-opening reaction. The conceptual basis of our work is that the dynamics to consider here is determined by diabatic states, whose populations are the ones closely related to the observed photoelectron signal.

Multiple Timescale Dynamics in Economic Production Networks

We describe a new complex system model of an evolving production economy. This model is the simplest we can envisage which incorporates the new observation that the rate of an economic production process depends only on the minimum of its supplies of inputs. We describe how this condition gives rise to a new type of complex multiple timescale dynamical evolution through a novel type of bifurcation we call a `trapping bifurcation', which is also shown to be one cause of non-equilibrium economic behaviour. Such dynamics is an example of meta-level coupling which may also arise in other fields such as the organization of a living cell as a network of molecular machines.

The Values Distribution in a Competing Shares Financial Market Model

We present our competing shares financial market model and describe its behaviour by numerical simulation. We show that in the critical region the distribution avalanches of the market value as defined in this model has a power-law distribution with exponent around 2.3. In this region the price returns distribution is truncated Levy stable with exponent near the observed value.

Criticality and Punctuated Equilibrium in a Spin System Model of a Financial Market

We describe a financial market model which shows a non-equilibrium phase transition. Near the transition punctuated equilibrium behaviour is seen, with avalanches occuring on all scales. This scaling is described by an exponent very near 1. This system shows intermittent time development with bursts of global synchronization reminiscent of a market rollercoaster.
