Suppression of antiferromagnetic order and orthorhombic distortion in superconducting Ba(Fe0.961Rh0.039)2As2

Neutron diffraction and high-resolution x-ray diffraction studies find that, similar to the closely related underdoped Ba(Fe[1-x]Cox)2As2 superconducting compounds, Ba(Fe0.961Rh0.039)2As2 shows strong evidence of competition and coexistence between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order below the superconducting transition, Tc = 14 K. The transition temperatures for both the magnetic order and orthorhombic distortion are in excellent agreement with those inferred from resistivity measurements, and both order parameters manifest a distinct decrease in magnitude below Tc. These data suggest that the strong interaction between magnetism and superconductivity is a general feature of electron-doped Ba(Fe[1-x]TMx)2As2 superconductors (TM = Transition Metal).

Dispersion of the superconducting spin resonance in underdoped and antiferromagnetic Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 4.7%) where superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order coexist. The broad magnetic spectrum found in the normal state develops into a magnetic resonance feature below TC that has appreciable dispersion along c-axis with a bandwidth of 3-4 meV. This is in contrast to the optimally doped x = 8.0% composition, with no long-range AFM order, where the resonance exhibits a much weaker dispersion [see Lumsden et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 107005 (2009)]. The results suggest that the resonance dispersion arises from interlayer spin correlations present in the AFM ordered state.

Anomalous suppression of the orthorhombic distortion in superconducting Ba[Fe(1-x)Cox]2As2

High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements reveal an unusually strong response of the lattice to superconductivity in Ba[Fe(1-x)Cox]2As2. The orthorhombic distortion of the lattice is suppressed and, for Co-doping near x = 0.063, the orthorhombic structure evolves smoothly back to a tetragonal structure. We propose that the coupling between orthorhombicity and superconductivity is indirect and arises due to the magneto-elastic coupling, in the form of emergent nematic order, and the strong competition between magnetism and superconductivity.

Discovery of a binary icosahedral quasicrystal in Sc$_12$Zn$_88$

We report the discovery of a new binary icosahedral phase in a Sc-Zn alloy obtained through solution-growth, producing millimeter-sized, facetted, single grain, quasicrystals that exhibit different growth morphologies, pentagonal dodecahedra and rhombic triacontahedra, under only marginally different growth conditions. These two morphologies manifest different degrees of quasicrystalline order, or phason strain. The discovery of i-Sc$_12$Zn$_88$ suggests that a reexamination of binary phase diagrams at compositions close to crystalline approximant structures may reveal other, new binary quasicrystalline phases.

Intrinsic pinning on structural domains in underdoped single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

Critical current density was studied in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ for the values of $x$ spanning the entire doping phase diagram. A noticeable enhancement was found for slightly underdoped crystals with the peak at $x = 0.058$. Using a combination of polarized-light imaging, x-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements we associate this behavior with the intrinsic pinning on structural domains in the orthorhombic phase. Domain walls extend throughout the sample thickness in the direction of vortices and act as extended pinning centers. With the increasing $x$ domain structure becomes more intertwined and fine due to a decrease of the orthorhombic distortion. This results in the energy landscape with maze-like spatial modulations favorable for pinning. This finding shows that iron-based pnictide superconductors, characterized by high values of the transition temperature, high upper critical fields, and low anisotropy may intrinsically have relatively high critical current densities.

Flux growth at ambient pressure of millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO1-xFx, and LaFe1-xCoxAsO

Millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO1-xFx, and LaFe1-xCoxAsO were grown in NaAs flux at ambient pressure. The detailed growth procedure and crystal characterizations are reported. The as-grown crystals have typical dimensions of 3 * 4 * 0.05-0.3 mm3 with the crystallographic c-axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate-like single crystals. Some crystals manifest linear dimensions as large as 4-5 mm. X-ray and neutron single crystal scattering confirmed that LaFeAsO crystals exhibit a structural phase transition at Ts ~ 154 K and a magnetic phase transition at TSDW ~ 140 K. The transition temperatures agree with those determined by anisotropic magnetization, in-plane electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements and are consistent with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Co and F were successfully introduced into the lattice leading to superconducting LaFe1-xCoxAsO and LaFeAsO1-xFx single crystals, respectively. This growth protocol has been successfully employed to grow single crystals of NdFeAsO. Thus it is expected to be broadly applicable to grow other RMAsO (R = rare earth, M = transition metal) compounds. These large crystals will facilitate the efforts of unraveling the underlying physics of iron pniticide superconductors.

Nature of the Magnetic Order in BaMn2As2

Neutron diffraction measurements have been performed on a powder sample of BaMn2As2 over the temperature T range from 10 K to 675 K. These measurements demonstrate that this compound exhibits collinear antiferromagnetic ordering below the Neel temperature T_N = 625(1) K. The ordered moment mu = 3.88(4) mu_B/Mn at T = 10 K is oriented along the c axis and the magnetic structure is G-type, with all nearest-neighbor Mn moments antiferromagnetically aligned. The value of the ordered moment indicates that the oxidation state of Mn is Mn^{2+} with a high spin S = 5/2. The T dependence of mu suggests that the magnetic transition is second-order in nature. In contrast to the closely related AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu) compounds, no structural distortion is observed in the magnetically ordered state of BaMn2As2.

Short-range magnetic correlations in Tb5Ge4

We present a single crystal neutron diffraction study of the magnetic short-range correlations in Tb$_5$Ge$_4$ which orders antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature $T_N$ $\approx$ 92 K. Strong diffuse scattering arising from magnetic short-range correlations was observed in wide temperature ranges both below and above $T_N$. The antiferromagnetic ordering in Tb$_5$Ge$_4$ can be described as strongly coupled ferromagnetic block layers in the $ac$-plane that stack along the b-axis with weak antiferromagnetic inter-layer coupling. Diffuse scattering was observed along both $a^*$ and $b^*$ directions indicating three-dimensional short-range correlations. Moreover, the $q$-dependence of the diffuse scattering is Squared-Lorentzian in form suggesting a strongly clustered magnetic state that may be related to the proposed Griffiths-like phase in Gd$_5$Ge$_4$.

Structural phase transition in Ba(Fe0.973Cr0.027)2As2 single crystals

We present thermodynamic, structural and transport measurements on Ba(Fe0.973Cr0.027)2As2 single crystals. All measurements reveal sharp anomalies at ~ 112 K. Single crystal x-ray diffraction identifies the structural transition as a first order, from the high-temperature tetragonal I4/mmm to the low-temperature orthorhombic Fmmm structure, in contrast to an earlier report.

Itinerant magnetic excitations in antiferromagnetic CaFe2As2

Neutron scattering measurements of the magnetic excitations in single crystals of antiferromagnetic CaFe2As2 reveal steeply dispersive and well-defined spin waves up to an energy of 100 meV. Magnetic excitations above 100 meV and up to the maximum energy of 200 meV are however broader in energy and momentum than the experimental resolution. While the low energy modes can be fit to a Heisenberg model, the total spectrum cannot be described as arising from excitations of a local moment system. Ab-initio calculations of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility suggest that the high energy behavior is dominated by the damping of spin waves by particle-hole excitations.

Direct imaging of the structural domains in iron pnictides AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba)

The parent compounds of recently discovered iron-arsenide superconductors, $A$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with alkaline earth $A$=Ca, Sr, Ba, undergo simultaneous structural and magnetic phase transitions at a temperature $T_{SM}$. Using a combination of polarized light microscopy and spatially resolved high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction we show that the orthorhombic distortion leads to the formation of 45$^o$-type structural domains in all parent compounds. Domains penetrate through the sample thickness in the $c$- direction and are not affected by crystal defects such as growth terraces. The domains form regular stripe patterns in the plane with a characteristic dimension of 10 to 50 $μm$. The direction of the stripes is fixed with respect to the tetragonal (100) and (010) directions but can change by 90$^o$ on thermal cycling through the transition. This domain pattern may have profound implications for intrinsic disorder and anisotropy of iron arsenides.

Competition and coexistence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in underdoped Ba(Fe0.953Co0.047)2As2

Neutron and x-ray diffraction studies show that the simultaneous first-order transition to an orthorhombic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered state in BaFe2As2 splits into two transitions with Co doping. For Ba(Fe0.953Co0.047)2As2, a tetragonal-orthorhombic transition occurs at TS = 60 K, followed by a second-order transition to AFM order at TN = 47 K. Superconductivity (SC) occurs in the orthorhombic state below TC = 15 K and coexists with AFM. Below TC, the static Fe moment is reduced and a 4 meV spin gap develops indicating competition between coexisting SC and AFM order.

Non-exponential London penetration depth in RFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ (R=La,Nd) single crystals

The superconducting penetration depth, $λ(T)$, has been measured in RFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ (R=La,Nd) single crystals (R-1111). In Nd-1111, we find an upturn in $λ(T)$ upon cooling and attribute it to the paramagnetism of the Nd ions, similar to the case of the electron-doped cuprate Nd-Ce-Cu-O. After the correction for paramagnetism, the London penetration depth variation is found to follow a power-law behavior, $Δλ_L(T)\propto T^{2}$ at low temperatures. The same $T^2$ variation of $λ(T)$ was found in non-magnetic La-1111 crystals. Analysis of the superfluid density and of penetration depth anisotropy over the full temperature range is consistent with two-gap superconductivity. Based on this and on our previous work, we conclude that both the RFeAsO (1111) and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (122) families of pnictide superconductors exhibit unconventional two-gap superconductivity.

Magnetic ordering in EuRh2As2 studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

Element-specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering investigations were performed to determine the magnetic structure of Eu in EuRh2As2. In the temperature range from 46 K down to 6 K, an incommensurate antiferromagnetic (ICM)structure with a temperature dependent propagation vector (0 0 0.9) coexists with a commensurate antiferromagnetic (CM) structure. Angular-dependent measurements of the magnetic intensity indicate that the magnetic moments lie in the tetragonal basal plane and are ferromagnetically aligned within the a-b plane for both magnetic structures. The ICM structure is a spiral-like magnetic structure with a turn angle of 162 deg between adjacent Eu planes. In the CM structure, this angle is 180 deg. These results are consistent with band-structure calculations which indicate a strong sensitivity of the magnetic configuration on the Eu valence.

Structural, magnetic and superconducting phase transitions in CaFe2As2 under ambient and applied pressure

At ambient pressure CaFe2As2 has been found to undergo a first order phase transition from a high temperature, tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase upon cooling through T ~ 170 K. With the application of pressure this phase transition is rapidly suppressed and by ~ 0.35 GPa it is replaced by a first order phase transition to a low temperature collapsed tetragonal, non-magnetic phase. Further application of pressure leads to an increase of the tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal phase transition temperature, with it crossing room temperature by ~ 1.7 GPa. Given the exceptionally large and anisotropic change in unit cell dimensions associated with the collapsed tetragonal phase, the state of the pressure medium (liquid or solid) at the transition temperature has profound effects on the low temperature state of the sample. For He-gas cells the pressure is as close to hydrostatic as possible and the transitions are sharp and the sample appears to be single phase at low temperatures. For liquid media cells at temperatures below media freezing, the CaFe2As2 transforms when it is encased by a frozen media and enters into a low temperature multi-crystallographic-phase state, leading to what appears to be a strain stabilized superconducting state at low temperatures.

Probing fractal magnetic domains on multiple length scales in Nd2Fe14B

Using small-angle neutron scattering, we demonstrate that the complex magnetic domain patterns at the surface of Nd2Fe14B, revealed by quantitative Kerr and Faraday microscopy, propagate into the bulk and exhibit structural features with dimensions down to 6 nm, the domain wall thickness. The observed fractal nature of the domain structures provides an explanation for the anomalous increase in the bulk magnetization of Nd2Fe14B below the spin-reorientation transition. These measurements open up a rich playground for studies of fractal structures in highly anisotropic magnetic systems.

Single Crystal Growth, Crystallography, Magnetic Susceptibility, Heat Capacity, and Thermal Expansion of the Antiferromagnetic S = 1 Chain Compound CaV2O4

The compound CaV2O4 contains V^{+3} cations with spin S = 1 and has an orthorhombic structure at room temperature containing zigzag chains of V atoms running along the c-axis. We have grown single crystals of CaV2O4 and report crystallography, static magnetization, magnetic susceptibility χ, ac magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity Cp, and thermal expansion measurements in the temperature T range of 1.8-350 K on the single crystals and on polycrystalline samples. An orthorhombic to monoclinic structural distortion and a long-range antiferromagnetic (AF) transition were found at sample-dependent temperatures T_S \approx 108-145 K and T_N \approx 51-76 K, respectively. In two annealed single crystals, another transition was found at \approx 200 K. In one of the crystals, this transition is mostly due to V2O3 impurity phase that grows coherently in the crystals during annealing. However, in the other crystal the origin of this transition at 200 K is unknown. The χ(T) shows a broad maximum at \approx 300 K associated with short-range AF ordering and the anisotropy of χabove T_N is small. The anisotropic χ(T \to 0) data below T_N show that the (average) easy axis of the AF magnetic structure is the b-axis. The Cp(T) data indicate strong short-range AF ordering above T_N, consistent with the χ(T) data. We fitted our χ(T) data near room temperature by a J1-J2 S = 1 Heisenberg chain model, where J1(J2) is the (next)-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. We find J1 \approx 230 K, and surprisingly, J2/J1 \approx 0 (or J1/J2 \approx 0). The interaction J_\perp between these S = 1 chains leading to long-range AF ordering at T_N is estimated to be J_\perp/J_1 \gtrsim 0.04.

Vortex studies in superconducting Ba(Fe0.93Co0.07)2As2

We present small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and Bitter decoration studies of the superconducting vortices in Ba(Fe$_{0.93}$Co$_{0.07}$)$_2$As$_2$}. A highly disordered vortex configuration is observed at all measured fields, and is attributed to strong pinning. This conclusion is supported by the absence of a Meissner rim in decoration images obtained close to the sample edge. The field dependence of the magnitude of the SANS scattering vector indicates vortex lattice domains of (distorted) hexagonal symmetry, consistent with the decoration images which show primarily 6-fold coordinated vortex domains. An analysis of the scattered intensity shows that this decreases much more rapidly than expected from estimates of the upper critical field, consistent with the large degree of disorder.
