Integral constraints in multiple scales problems with a slowly varying microstructure

Asymptotic homogenisation is considered for problems with integral constraints imposed on a slowly-varying microstructure; an insulator with an array of perfectly dielectric inclusions of slowly varying size serves as a paradigm. Although it is well-known how to handle each of these effects (integral constraints, slowly-varying microstructure) independently within multiple scales analysis, additional care is needed when they are combined. Using the flux transport theorem, the multiple scales form of an integral constraint on a slowly varying domain is identified. The proposed form is applied to obtain a homogenised model for the electric potential in a dielectric composite, where the microstructure slowly varies and the integral constraint arises due to a statement of charge conservation. A comparison with multiple scales analysis of the problem with established approaches provides validation that the proposed form results in the correct homogenised model.

A Homogenised Model of Fluid-String Interaction

A homogenised model is developed to describe the interaction between aligned strings and an incompressible, viscous, Newtonian fluid. In the case of many strings, the ratio of string separation to domain width gives a small parameter which can be exploited to simplify the problem. Model derivation using multiscale asymptotics results in a modified Darcy law for fluid flow, with coefficients determined by averaged solutions to microscale problems. Fluid flow is coupled to solid deformation via a homogenised force balance obtained by coarse-graining the balance on each string. This approach offers an alternative method to systematically derive the equations governing the interaction of Stokes flow with many flexible structures. The resulting model of fluid-structure interaction is reduced to a single scalar, linear, partial differential equation by introducing a potential for the pressure. Analytical solutions are presented for a cylindrical geometry subject to time harmonic motion of the string ends. Scaling laws are identified that describe the variation of shear stress exerted on the string surface with the forcing frequency.

Distance Probes of Dark Energy

This document presents the results from the Distances subgroup of the Cosmic Frontier Community Planning Study (Snowmass 2013). We summarize the current state of the field as well as future prospects and challenges. In addition to the established probes using Type IA supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations, we also consider prospective methods based on clusters, active galactic nuclei, gravitational wave sirens and strong lensing time delays.

Experimental bit commitment based on quantum communication and special relativity

Bit commitment is a fundamental cryptographic primitive in which Bob wishes to commit a secret bit to Alice. Perfectly secure bit commitment has been proven impossible through asynchronous exchange of classical and quantum information. Perfect security is however possible by restraining the exchange of classical and quantum information to suitably chosen relativistic constraints. This requires Alice (and Bob) to split into two remote agents performing space-like separated classical communication, and in one agent exchanging quantum bits with the other party. The duration of the commitment is given by the distance between the two remote agents. The original protocol requires the quantum communication to happen at a precise location and time with respect to the classical communication. We show how the protocol can be modified to relax this constraint such that the quantum part of the protocol can be performed at any time before the actual commitment, making it much more practical. Finally, we present an experimental demonstration of this protocol realized with a commercial quantum key distribution system and with synchronized classical agents located in Geneva and Singapore, yielding a commitment time of 15 ms. Our work includes a complete security analysis, accounting for experimental imperfections (multi-photon emission, transmission loss, detector inefficiency and dark counts) and finite statistics.

Singular Vectors of the Virasoro Algebra

We give expressions for the singular vectors in the highest weight representations of the Virasoro algebra. We verify that the expressions --- which take the form of a product of operators applied to the highest weight vector --- do indeed define singular vectors. These results explain the patterns of embeddings amongst Virasoro algebra highest weight representations.

Projections of Virasoro Singular Vectors

We use recently derived explicit formulae for the Virasoro algebra's singular vectors to give constructive proofs of three results due to Feigin and Fuchs. The main result, which is needed for a rigorous treatment of fusion, describes the action of the singular vectors on conformal fields.

Signature Characters for the Virasoro Algebra

The number of ghost states at each energy level in a non-unitary conformal field theory is encoded in the signature characters of the relevant Virasoro algebra highest weight representations. We give expressions for these signature characters. These results complete Friedan-Qiu-Shenker's analysis of the Virasoro algebra's highest weight representations.

Signature Characters for A_2 and B_2

The signatures of the inner product matrices on a Lie algebra's highest weight representation are encoded in the representation's signature character. We show that the signature characters of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra's highest weight representations obey simple difference equations that have a unique solution once appropriate boundary conditions are imposed. We use these results to derive the signature characters of all $A_2$ and $B_2$ highest weight representations. Our results extend, and explain, signature patterns analogous to those observed by Friedan, Qiu and Shenker in the Virasoro algebra's representation theory.
