A White Paper on keV Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter

We present a comprehensive review of keV-scale sterile neutrino Dark Matter, collecting views and insights from all disciplines involved - cosmology, astrophysics, nuclear, and particle physics - in each case viewed from both theoretical and experimental/observational perspectives. After reviewing the role of active neutrinos in particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, we focus on sterile neutrinos in the context of the Dark Matter puzzle. Here, we first review the physics motivation for sterile neutrino Dark Matter, based on challenges and tensions in purely cold Dark Matter scenarios. We then round out the discussion by critically summarizing all known constraints on sterile neutrino Dark Matter arising from astrophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical considerations. In this context, we provide a balanced discourse on the possibly positive signal from X-ray observations. Another focus of the paper concerns the construction of particle physics models, aiming to explain how sterile neutrinos of keV-scale masses could arise in concrete settings beyond the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. The paper ends with an extensive review of current and future astrophysical and laboratory searches, highlighting new ideas and their experimental challenges, as well as future perspectives for the discovery of sterile neutrinos.

The Electron Capture $^{163}$Ho Experiment ECHo

The determination of the absolute scale of the neutrino masses is one of the most challenging questions in particle physics. Different approaches are followed to achieve a sensitivity on neutrino masses in the sub-eV range. Among them, experiments exploring the beta decay and electron capture processes of suitable nuclides can provide necessary information on the electron neutrino mass value. In this talk we present the Electron Capture 163-Ho experiment ECHo, which aims to investigate the electron neutrino mass in the sub-eV range by means of the analysis of the calorimetrically measured energy spectrum following the electron capture process of 163-Ho. A high precision and high statistics spectrum will be measured by means of low temperature magnetic calorimeter arrays. We present preliminary results obtained with a first prototype of single channel detectors as well as the participating groups and their on-going developments.

The $^{150}$Nd($^3$He,$t$) and $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) reactions with applications to $\beta\beta$ decay of $^{150}$Nd

The $^{150}$Nd($^3$He,$t$) reaction at 140 MeV/u and $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) reaction at 115 MeV/u were measured, populating excited states in $^{150}$Pm. The transitions studied populate intermediate states of importance for the (neutrinoless) $\beta\beta$ decay of $^{150}$Nd to $^{150}$Sm. Monopole and dipole contributions to the measured excitation-energy spectra were extracted by using multipole decomposition analyses. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations obtained within the framework of Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA), which is one of the main methods employed for estimating the half-life of the neutrinoless $\beta\beta$ decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{150}$Nd. The present results thus provide useful information on the neutrino responses for evaluating the $0\nu\beta\beta$ and $2\nu\beta\beta$ matrix elements. The $2\nu\beta\beta$ matrix element calculated from the Gamow-Teller transitions through the lowest $1^{+}$ state in the intermediate nucleus is maximally about half of that deduced from the half-life measured in $2\nu\beta\beta$ direct counting experiments and at least several transitions through $1^{+}$ intermediate states in $^{150}$Pm are required to explain the $2\nu\beta\beta$ half-life. Because Gamow-Teller transitions in the $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) experiment are strongly Pauli-blocked, the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths was complicated by the excitation of the $2\hbar\omega$, $\Delta L=0$, $\Delta S=1$ isovector spin-flip giant monopole resonance (IVSGMR). However, the near absence of Gamow-Teller transition strength made it possible to cleanly identify this resonance, and the strength observed is consistent with the full exhaustion of the non-energy-weighted sum rule for the IVSGMR.

Single and low-lying states dominance in two-neutrino double-beta decay

A theoretical analysis of the single-state dominance hypothesis for the two-neutrino double-beta decay rates is performed on the examples of the double-beta decays of 100Mo, 116Cd, and 128Te. We also test the validity of an extended low-lying-state dominance that takes into account the contributions of the low-lying excited states in the intermediate nucleus to the double-beta decay rates. This study has been accomplished for all the double-beta emitters for which we have experimental information on their half-lives. The theoretical framework is a proton-neutron quasiparticle random-phase approximation based on a deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations. Our calculations indicate that there are not clear evidences for single- or low-lying-state dominance in the two-neutrino double-beta decay. Finally, we investigate the single electron energy distributions of the outgoing electrons in the double-beta decay processes with an exact treatment of the energy denominators, which could help to a more comprehensive analysis of NEMO-3 data.

Experimental and theoretical evidences for an intermediate $\sigma$-dressed dibaryon in the NN interaction

Numerous theoretical and experimental arguments are presented in favor of the generation of intermediate $\sigma$-dressed dibaryon in $NN$ interaction at intermediate and short distances. We argue that this intermediate dibaryon can be responsible for the strong intermediate-range attraction and the short-range repulsion in the $NN$ interaction, and also for the short-range correlations in nuclei. The suggested mechanism for the $\sigma$-dressing of the dibaryon is identical to that which explains the Roper resonance structure, its dominant decay modes and its extraordinary low mass. A similar transformation mechanism from the glue to the scalar field was discovered in $J/\Psi$ decays. The new experimental data on 2$\pi$-production in the scalar-isoscalar channel produced in $pn$- and $pd$-collisions and in particular the very recent data on $\gamma\gamma$ correlations in $p$C and $d$C scattering in the GeV region seems to corroborate the existence of the $\sigma$-dressed dibaryon in two- and three nucleon interactions.

Modern compact star observations and the quark matter equation of state

We present a hybrid equation of state (EoS) for dense matter that satisfies phenomenological constraints from modern compact star (CS) observations which indicate high maximum masses (M = 2 M_sun) and large radii (R> 12 km). The corresponding isospin symmetric EoS is consistent with flow data analyses of heavy-ion collisions and a deconfinement transition at approx. 0.55 fm^{-3}. The quark matter phase is described by a 3-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model that accounts for scalar diquark condensation and vector meson interactions while the nuclear matter phase is obtained within the Dirac-Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (DBHF) approach using the Bonn-A potential. We demonstrate that both pure neutron stars and neutron stars with quark matter cores (QCSs) are consistent with modern CS observations. Hybrid star configurations with a CFL quark core are unstable.

Large-scale prediction of the parity distribution in the nuclear level density and application to astrophysical reaction rates

A generalized method to calculate the excitation-energy dependent parity ratio in the nuclear level density is presented, using the assumption of Poisson distributed independent quasi particles combined with BCS occupation numbers. It is found that it is crucial to employ a sufficiently large model space to allow excitations both from low-lying shells and to higher shells beyond a single major shell. Parity ratios are only found to equilibrate above at least 5-10 MeV of excitation energy. Furthermore, an overshooting effect close to major shells is found where the parity opposite to the ground state parity may dominate across a range of several MeV before the parity ratio finally equilibrates. The method is suited for large-scale calculations as needed, for example, in astrophysical applications. Parity distributions were computed for all nuclei from the proton dripline to the neutron dripline and from Ne up to Bi. These results were then used to recalculate astrophysical reaction rates in a Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. Although certain transitions can be considerably enhanced or suppressed, the impact on astrophysically relevant reactions remains limited, mainly due to the thermal population of target states in stellar reaction rates.

Effect of deformation on two-neutrino double beta decay matrix elements

We study the effect of deformation on the two-neutrino double beta decay for ground state to ground state transitions in all the nuclei whose half-lives have been measured. Our theoretical framework is a deformed QRPA based in Woods-Saxon or Hartree-Fock mean fields. We are able to reproduce at the same time the main characteristics of the two single beta branches, as well as the double beta matrix elements. We find a suppression of the double beta matrix element with respect to the spherical case when the parent and daughter nuclei have different deformations.

Model independent study of the nucleon self-energy in matter

Relativistic and non-relativistic modern nucleon-nucleon potentials are mapped on a relativistic operator basis using projection techniques. This allows to compare the various potentials at the level of covariant amplitudes were a remarkable agreement is found. In nuclear matter large scalar and vector mean fields of several hundred MeV magnitude are generated at tree level. This is found to be a model independent feature of the nucleon-nucleon interaction.

Constraints on the high-density nuclear equation of state from the phenomenology of compact stars and heavy-ion collisions

A new scheme for testing nuclear matter equations of state (EsoS) at high densities using constraints from neutron star phenomenology and a flow data analysis of heavy-ion collisions is suggested. An acceptable EoS shall not allow the direct Urca process to occur in neutron stars with masses below $1.5~M_{\odot}$, and also shall not contradict flow and kaon production data of heavy-ion collisions. Compact star constraints include the mass measurements of 2.1 +/- 0.2 M_sun (1 sigma level) for PSR J0751+1807, of 2.0 +/- 0.1 M_sun from the innermost stable circular orbit for 4U 1636-536, the baryon mass - gravitational mass relationships from Pulsar B in J0737-3039 and the mass-radius relationships from quasiperiodic brightness oscillations in 4U 0614+09 and from the thermal emission of RX J1856-3754. This scheme is applied to a set of relativistic EsoS constrained otherwise from nuclear matter saturation properties with the result that no EoS can satisfy all constraints simultaneously, but those with density-dependent masses and coupling constants appear most promising.

Continuum RPA study of the incoherent mu-e conversion rate and its spurious 1- admixture

The incoherent transition strength of the exotic mu-e conversion in the 208Pb nucleus is investigated by utilizing the Continuum RPA method, appropriate for the evaluation of the rate that goes to the continuum of the nuclear spectrum. We find that the contribution of resonances lying high in the continuum is not negligible. Special attention is paid to the detailed study of the pronounced 1- contribution which, according to previous calculations, dominates the overall incoherent rate in about all the nuclear targets. The spurious center of mass admixture to the partial rate originating from the 1- excitations is explored, and its elimination is performed by correcting properly the dipole operators. The results found this way show that the greatest portion of the total 1- contribution to the incoherent rate is spurious.

Neutrinoless double beta decay and neutrino mass hierarchies

In the framework of the see-saw mechanism the normal hierarchy is favorable for the neutrino mass spectrum. For this spectrum we present a detailed calculation of the half-lives of neutrinoless double beta decay for several nuclei of experimental interest. The half-lives are evaluated by considering the most comprehensive nuclear matrix elements, which were obtained within the renormalized QRPA by the Bratislava-Caltech-Tuebingen group. The dependence of the half-lives on sin^2 theta_{13}$ and the lightest neutrino mass is studied. We present also the results of the calculations of the half-lives of neutrinoless double beta decay in the case of the inverted hierarchy of neutrino masses.

A deformed QRPA formalism for single and two-neutrino double beta decay

We use a deformed QRPA formalism to describe simultaneously the energy distributions of the single beta Gamow-Teller strength and the two-neutrino double beta decay matrix elements. Calculations are performed in a series of double beta decay partners with A = 48, 76, 82, 96, 100, 116, 128, 130, 136 and 150, using deformed Woods-Saxon potentials and deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean fields. The formalism includes a quasiparticle deformed basis and residual spin-isospin forces in the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. We discuss the sensitivity of the parent and daughter Gamow-Teller strength distributions in single beta decay, as well as the sensitivity of the double beta decay matrix elements to the deformed mean field and to the residual interactions. Nuclear deformation is found to be a mechanism of suppression of the two-neutrino double beta decay. The double beta decay matrix elements are found to have maximum values for about equal deformations of parent and daughter nuclei. They decrease rapidly when differences in deformations increase. We remark the importance of a proper simultaneous description of both double beta decay and single Gamow-Teller strength distributions. Finally, we conclude that for further progress in the field it would be useful to improve and complete the experimental information on the studied Gamow-Teller strengths and nuclear deformations.

New results for the two neutrino double beta decay in deformed nuclei with angular momentum projected basis

Four nuclei which are proved to be $2νββ$ emitters ($^{76}$Ge, $^{82}$Se, $^{150}$Nd, $^{238}$U), and four suspected, due to the corresponding Q-values, to have this property ($^{148}$Nd, $^{154}$Sm, $^{160}$Gd, $^{232}$Th), were treated within a proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pnQRPA) with a projected spherical single particle basis. The advantage of the present procedure over the ones using a deformed Woods Saxon or Nilsson single particle basis is that the actual pnQRPA states have a definite angular momentum while all the others provide states having only K as a good quantum number. The model Hamiltonian involves a mean field term yielding the projected single particle states, a pairing interaction for alike nucleons and a dipole-dipole proton-neutron interaction in both the particle-hole (ph) and particle-particle (pp) channels. The effect of nuclear deformation on the single beta strength distribution as well as on the double beta Gamow-Teller transition amplitude (M$_{\rm GT}$) is analyzed. The results are compared with the existent data and with the results from a different approach, in terms of the process half life T$_{1/2}$. The case of different deformations for mother and daughter nuclei is also presented.

Parity-Dependence in the Nuclear Level Density

Astrophysical reaction rates are sensitive to the parity distribution at low excitation energies. We combine a formula for the energy-dependent parity distribution with a microscopic-macroscopic nuclear level density. This approach describes well the transition from low excitation energies, where a single parity dominates, to high excitations where the two densities are equal.

Microscopic description of anisotropic flow in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Anisotropic flow of hadrons is studied in heavy ion collisions at SPS and RHIC energies within the microscopic quark-gluon string model. The model was found to reproduce correctly many of the flow features, e.g., the wiggle structure of direct flow of nucleons at midrapidity, or centrality, rapidity, and transverse momentum dependences of elliptic flow. Further predictions are made. The differences in the development of the anisotropic flow components are linked to the freeze-out conditions, which are quite different for baryons and mesons.

A dressed bag model study of the final-state $N\Delta$ interaction in photoproduction processes off the deuteron

The impact of the short-range $N\Delta$ interaction on the pion photoproduction processes off the deuteron in the $\Delta$-resonance region is studied in the framework of recently proposed dressed-bag model. A common dressing procedure for bare three- and six-quark states is used to describe both the pion decay widths of baryon resonances and the effective $NN$ (or $N\Delta$) interaction at short ranges related to the inner dressed-bag states. It is shown that the effect of short-range $N\Delta$ interaction for the forward-angle $\pi^\mathrm{o}$ photoproduction off the deuteron cannot be neglected. The prospects for further development of the model to describe the short-range $NN$ (or $N\Delta$) correlations in the lightest nuclei are discussed.
