Quantized Transport of Gap Solitons in the Harper-Hofstadter Model

We investigate the dynamics of gap solitons found in the Harper-Hofstadter model with an additional cubic nonlinearity, such as that describing weakly-interacting cold atoms or a Kerr nonlinearity in an optical platform. We find that certain solitons with frequencies deep in the band gap travel with a robust, quantized velocity perpendicular to the applied force and maintain their spatial profile over long timescales. Crucially, this velocity is linearly proportional to the applied force, allowing for arbitrary steering of the nonlinear wavepacket, without breakdown, using only a tunable external force. This quantized transport persists despite a highly non-uniform occupation of the linear Bloch states, and contrasts with solitons near the band edge, which deform and delocalize under the same force. These results point to a robust and highly controllable mechanism for steering nonlinear solitons in experimentally accessible platforms.

On multicomponent polariton superfluidity in the optical parametric oscillator regime

Superfluidity, the ability of a liquid or gas to flow with zero viscosity, is one of the most remarkable implications of collective quantum coherence. In equilibrium systems like liquid 4He and ultracold atomic gases, superfluid behaviour conjugates diverse yet related phenomena, such as persistency of metastable flow in multiply connected geometries and the existence of a critical velocity for frictionless flow when hitting a static defect. The link between these different aspects of superfluid behaviour is far less clear in driven-dissipative systems displaying collective coherence, such as microcavity polaritons, which raises important questions about their concurrency. With a joint theoretical and experimental study, we show that the scenario is particularly rich for polaritons driven in a three-fluid collective coherent regime so-called optical parametric oscillator. On the one hand, the spontaneous macroscopic coherence following the phase locking of the signal and idler fluids has been shown to be responsible for their simultaneous quantized flow metastability. On the other hand, we show here that pump, signal and idler have distinct responses when hitting a static defect; while the signal displays hardly appreciable modulations, the ones appearing in pump and idler are determined by their mutual coupling due to nonlinear and parametric processes.

Pseudodiffusive transmission of nodal Dirac fermions through a clean d-wave superconductor

We calculate the transmission of electrons and holes between two normal-metal electrodes (N), separated over a distance L by an impurity-free superconductor (S) with d-wave symmetry of the order parameter. Nodal lines of vanishing excitation gap form ballistic conduction channels for coupled electron-hole excitations, described by an anisotropic two-dimensional Dirac equation. We find that the transmitted electrical and thermal currents, at zero energy, both have the pseudodiffusive 1/L scaling characteristic of massless Dirac fermions - regardless of the presence of tunnel barriers at the NS interfaces. Tunnel barriers reduce the slope of the 1/L scaling in the case of the electrical current, while leaving the thermal current unaffected.
