Adiabatic driving and parallel transport for parameter-dependent Hamiltonians

We use the Van Vleck-Primas perturbation theory to study the problem of parallel transport of the eigenvectors of a parameter-dependent Hamiltonian. The perturbative approach allows us to define a non-Abelian connection $\mathcal{A}$ that generates parallel translation via unitary transformation of the eigenvectors. It is shown that the connection obtained via the perturbative approach is an average of the Maurer-Cartan 1-form of the one-parameter subgroup generated by the Hamiltonian. We use the Yang-Mills curvature and the non-Abelian Stokes' theorem to show that the holonomy of the connection $\mathcal{A}$ is related to the Berry phase.

The two-dimensional three-body problem in a strong magnetic field is integrable

The problem of $N$ particles interacting through pairwise central forces is notoriously intractable for $N\geq3$. Some quite remarkable specific cases have been solved in one dimension, whereas higher-dimensional exactly solved systems involve velocity-dependent or many-body forces. Here we show that the guiding center approximation---valid for charges moving in two dimensions in a strong constant magnetic field---simplifies the three-body problem for an arbitrary interparticle interaction invariant under rotations and translations and makes it solvable by quadratures. This includes a broad variety of special cases, such as that of three particles interacting through arbitrary pairwise central potentials. A spinorial representation for the system is introduced, which allows a visualization of its phase space as the corresponding Bloch sphere as well as the identification of a Berry-Hannay rotational anholonomy. Finally, a brief discussion of the quantization of the problem is presented.

An AB effect without closing a loop

We discuss the consequences of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in setups involving several charged particles, wherein none of the charged particles encloses a closed loop around the magnetic flux. We show that in such setups, the AB phase is encoded either in the relative phase of a bi-partite or multi-partite entangled photons states, or alternatively, gives rise to an overall AB phase that can be measured relative to another reference system. These setups involve processes of annihilation or creation of electron/hole pairs. We discuss the relevance of such effects in "vacuum Birefringence" in QED, and comment on their connection to other known effects.
