$C^1$ density of stable ergodicity

We prove a $C^1$ version of a conjecture by Pugh and Shub: among partially hyperbolic volume-preserving $C^r$ diffeomorphisms, $r>1$, the stably ergodic ones are $C^1$-dense. To establish these results, we develop new perturbation tools for the $C^1$ topology: linearization of horseshoes while preserving entropy, and creation of "superblenders" from hyperbolic sets with large entropy.

Spectral theory of extended Harper's model and a question by Erdős and Szekeres

The extended Harper's model, proposed by D.J. Thouless in 1983, generalizes the famous almost Mathieu operator, allowing for a wider range of lattice geometries (parametrized by three coupling parameters) by permitting 2D electrons to hop to both nearest and next nearest neighboring (NNN) lattice sites, while still exhibiting its characteristic symmetry (Aubry duality). Previous understanding of the spectral theory of this model was restricted to two dual regions of the parameter space, one of which is characterized by the positivity of the Lyapunov exponent. In this paper, we complete the picture with a description of the spectral measures over the entire remaining (self-dual) region, for all irrational values of the frequency parameter (the magnetic flux in the model). Most notably, we prove that in the entire interior of this regime, the model exhibits a collapse from purely ac spectrum to purely sc spectrum when the NNN interaction becomes symmetric. In physics literature, extensive numerical analysis had indicated such "spectral collapse," however so far not even a heuristic argument for this phenomenon could be provided. On the other hand, in the remaining part of the self-dual region, the spectral measures are singular continuous irrespective of such symmetry. The analysis requires some rather delicate number theoretic estimates, which ultimately depend on the solution of a problem posed by Erdős and Szekeres.

On mixing diffeomorphisms of the disk

We prove that a real analytic pseudo-rotation $f$ of the disc or the sphere is never topologically mixing. When the rotation number of $f$ is of Brjuno type, the latter follows from a KAM theorem of Rüssmann on the stability of real analytic elliptic fixed points. In the non-Brjuno case, we prove that a pseudo-rotation of class $C^k$, $k\geq 2$, is $C^{k-1}$-rigid using the simple observation, derived from Franks' Lemma on free discs, that a pseudo-rotation with small rotation number compared to its $C^1$ (or Hölder) norm must be close to Identity. From our result and a structure theorem by Franks and Handel (on zero entropy surface diffeomorphisms) it follows that an analytic conservative diffeomorphism of the disc or the sphere that is topologically mixing must have positive topological entropy. In our proof we need an a priori limit on the growth of the derivatives of the iterates of a pseudo-rotation that we obtain via an effective finite information version of the Katok closing lemma for an area preserving surface diffeomorphism $f$, that provides a controlled gap in the possible growth of the derivatives of $f$ between exponential and sub-exponential.
