Observation of quincunx-shaped and dipole-like flatband states in photonic rhombic lattices without band-touching

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of compact localized states (CLSs) in a quasi-one-dimensional photonic rhombic lattice in presence of two distinct refractive-index gradients (i.e., a driven lattice ribbon) acting as external direct current (dc) electric fields. Such a lattice is composed of an array of periodically arranged evanescently coupled waveguides, which hosts a perfect flatband that touches both remaining dispersive bands when it is not driven. The external driving is realized by modulating the relative writing beam intensity of adjacent waveguides. We find that a y-gradient set perpendicularly to the ribbon preserves the flatband while removing the band-touching. The undriven CLS - which occupies two lattices sites over one unit cell - turns into a quincunx-shaped CLS spanned over two unit cells. Instead, an x-gradient acting parallel to the ribbon yields a Stark ladder of CLS whose spatial profile is unchanged with respect to the undriven case. We notably find that their superposition leads to Bloch-like oscillations in momentum space.

Screening Charged Impurities and Lifting the Orbital Degeneracy in Graphene by Populating Landau Levels

We report the observation of an isolated charged impurity in graphene and present direct evidence of the close connection between the screening properties of a 2D electron system and the influence of the impurity on its electronic environment. Using scanning tunneling microscopy and Landau level spectroscopy we demonstrate that in the presence of a magnetic field the strength of the impurity can be tuned by controlling the occupation of Landau-level states with a gate-voltage. At low occupation the impurity is screened becoming essentially invisible. Screening diminishes as states are filled until, for fully occupied Landau-levels, the unscreened impurity significantly perturbs the spectrum in its vicinity. In this regime we report the first observation of Landau-level splitting into discrete states due to lifting the orbital degeneracy.

Two-dimensional magnetic interactions in LaFeAsO

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrate that the magnetic interactions in antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO are two-dimensional. Spin wave velocities within the Fe layer and the magnitude of the spin gap are similar to the \textit{A}Fe$_2$As$_2$ based materials. However, the ratio of interlayer and intralayer exchange is found to be less than $\sim 10^{-4}$ in LaFeAsO, very similar to the cuprates, and $\sim$ 100 times smaller than that found in \textit{A}Fe$_2$As$_2$ compounds. The results suggest that the effective dimensionality of the magnetic system is highly variable in the parent compounds of the iron arsenides and weak 3-D interactions may limit the maximum attainable superconducting $T_{c}$.

Weight-Length Relationships in Gafftopsail Catfish (Bagre marinus) and Hardhead Catfish (Ariopsis felis) in Louisiana Waters

In spite of the abundance and commercial importance of these two species, there is little published weight-length data for the gafftopsail catfish (Bagre marinus) and hardhead catfish (Ariopsis felis). For this study 84 catfish were caught (hook and line) from the Calcasieu Estuary in Southwest Louisiana near the Gulf of Mexico and estuaries and near shore waters close to bayou Lafourche. Using least squares regression, best fit curves were determined for weight (W) vs. total length (L) relationships in gafftopsail catfish, W(L) = 1000(L/484.73)^3.2660, while the best-fit equation for the hardhead was W(L) = 1000(L/469.53)^3.0188, where W is the weight in grams and L is the total length in millimeters. Results showed that, when compared to gafftopsail and hardhead catfish caught in Florida, Louisiana gafftopsail catfish tend to weigh less at similar lengths; whereas, the Louisiana hardhead catfish tend to weigh about the same. Results also show that the total length (TL) can be related to the fork length (FL) as TL = 1.184 FL in gafftopsail catfish with R^2 = 0.9922 and TL = 1.140 FL with R^2 = 0.9667 in hardhead catfish.

Electrostatically tuned quantum superconductor-metal-insulator transition at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

Recently superconductivity at the interface between the insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has been tuned with the electric field effect to an unprecedented range of transition temperatures. Here we perform a detailed finite size scaling analysis to explore the compatibility of the phase transition line with Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) behavior and a 2D-quantum phase(QP)-transition. In an intermediate regime, limited by a gate voltage dependent limiting length, we uncover remarkable consistency with a BKT-critical line ending at a metallic quantum critical point, separating a weakly localized insulator from the superconducting phase. Our estimates for the critical exponents of the 2D-QP-transition, z=1 and nu=0.66, suggest that it belongs to the 3D-xy universality class.

Spectral beam combining of Yb-doped fiber lasers using wavelength dependent polarization rotators and polarization beam combiners

We propose a robust spectral beam combining scheme using wavelength dependent polarisation rotators and polarization beam combiners. We successfully demonstrated the concept for two Yb-doped fiber lasers at 1064nm and 1092nm up to a total input power of 90W. The results reveal a very good combining efficiency and the potential for scaling to high power operations in this method of beam combining.
