Implications For The Hubble Constant from the First Seven Supernovae at z >= 0.35

The Supernova Cosmology Project has discovered over twenty-eight supernovae (SNe) at 0.35 = 0.2, we find that H_0^G < 70 km/s/Mpc in a Lambda=0 universe and H_0^G < 78 km/s/Mpc in a flat universe, correcting the distant and local SN apparent magnitudes for light curve width. Lower results for H_0^G are obtained if the magnitudes are not width corrected.

The Amanda Experiment

At the AMANDA South Pole site, four new holes were drilled to depths 2050 m to 2180 m and instrumented with 86 photomultipliers (PMTs) at depths 1520-2000 m. Of these PMTs 79 are working, with 4-ns timing resolution and noise rates 300 to 600 Hz. Various diagnostic devices were deployed and are working. An observed factor 60 increase in scattering length and a sharpening of the distribution of arrival times of laser pulses relative to measurements at 800-1000 m showed that bubbles are absent below 1500 m. Absorption lengths are 100 to 150 m at wavelengths in the blue and UV to 337 nm. Muon coincidences are seen between the SPASE air shower array and the AMANDA PMTs at 800-1000 m and 1500-1900 m. The muon track rate is 30 Hz for 8-fold triggers and 10 Hz for 10-fold triggers. The present array is the nucleus for a future expanded array.

The Virgo consortium: simulations of dark matter and galaxy clustering

We report on work in progress by the Virgo consortium, a collaboration set up to carry out large simulations of the formation of galaxies and large-scale structure exploiting the latest generation of parallel supercomputers. We show results of $256^3$ particle N-body simulations of the clustering evolution of dark matter in four cold dark matter models with different cosmological parameters. The high resolution and large volume of these simulations allows us to determine reliably the mass autocorrelation function for pair separations in the range $40\hkpc$ to $20\hmpc$. Comparison of these with the observed galaxy correlation function shows that for any of these models to be viable, the distribution of galaxies must be biased relative to the distribution of mass in a non-trivial, scale-dependent fashion. In particular, low $Ω_0$ models require the galaxies to be more ``weakly'' clustered than the mass at small and intermediate pair separations. Simulations which include the evolution of gas show that cold gas knots form with approximately the abundance expected on theoretical grounds, although a few excessively massive objects grow near the centres of rich clusters. The locations where these cold gas knots form are, in general, biased relative to the distribution of mass in a scale-dependent way. Some of these biases have the required sign but they are, for the most part, weaker than is necessary for agreement with observations. The antibias present in our low $Ω_0$ N-body/SPH simulation appears to be related to the merging and disruption of galaxies in rich clusters.

Full QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions on a 24^3 x 40-lattice -- a feasibility study

The investigation of light sea-quark effects in lattice QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions requires both larger physical volumes and finer lattice resolutions than achieved previously. As high-end supercomputers like the 512-node APE Tower provide the compute power to perform a major step towards the chiral limit (T-chi-L), we have launched a feasibility study on a 24^3 x 40 lattice. We approach the chiral limit--while refining the resolution--, using the standard Wilson fermion action. Following previous work, our Hybrid Monte Carlo simulation runs at beta=5.6 and two kappa-values, 0.1575 and 0.158. From our study, we are confident that, for the APE Tower, a realistic working point has been found corresponding to a volume of 2 fm^3, with chirality characterized by 1/(a m_pi) = 5.6.

Evaluating Sea Quark Contributions to Flavour-Singlet Operators in Lattice QCD

In a full QCD lattice study with $N_f = 2$ Wilson fermions, we seek to optimize the signals for the disconnected contributions to the matrix element of flavour-singlet operators between nucleon states, which are indicative for sea quark effects. We demonstrate, in form of a fluctuation analysis to the noisy estimator technique, that -- in order to achieve a tolerable signal to noise-ratio in full QCD -- it is advantageous to work with a $Z_2$-noise source rather than to rely only on gauge invariance to cancel non-gauge-invariant background. In the case of the $π$N $σ$-term, we find that 10 $Z_2$-noise sources suffice on our sample ( about 150 independent QCD configurations at $β= 5.6$ on $16^3\times32$ with $κ_{sea} = 0.157$, equivalent to $M_π/M_ρ = 0.76(1)$), to achieve decent signals and adequate fluctuations, rather than 300 such sources as recently used in quenched simulations.

QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions - first results from SESAM

First results of a recently started simulation of full QCD with two flavours of sea-quarks at a coupling of $β= 5.6$ on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice are presented. Emphasis is laid on the statistical significance that can be achieved by an ``integrated luminosity'' of 140 TFlop$\times$hrs, for Hybrid Monte Carlo simulations at four intermediate values of $\frac{m_π}{m_ρ}$. The simulation takes place on the Quadrics QH2 at DESY/Zeuthen and DFG/Bielefeld. The performance is optimized by means of BiCGStab and the chronological inversion method of Brower et al. We discuss the systematic errors arising from lack of the molecular dynamic's reversibility on the 32-bit QH2. For plaquette and meson correlators we find integrated autocorrelation times of $< 20$ units of molecular dynamics time and exponential autocorrelation times of about $50$ units. Using these results we perform preliminary measurements of the central potential and $π$ and $ρ$ correlators on independent configurations and obtain first estimates of the lattice spacings at three values of the dynamical hopping parameter.

Quenched $B_K$-parameter with the Wilson and Clover actions at $β= 6.0$

We present results for the Kaon $B$ parameter from a sample of $200$ configurations using the Wilson action and $460$ configurations using the Clover action, on a $18^3 \times 64$ lattice at $β=6.0$. A slight improvement of the chiral behaviour of $B_K$ is observed due to the Clover action. We have also compared the results for $B_K$ obtained from two different procedures for the boosting of the coupling constant $g$. We observe a strong dependence of $B_K$ on the prescription adopted for $g$ in the Wilson case, contrary to the results of the Clover case which are almost unaffected by the choice of $g$. Combining some recently obtained non perturbative estimates for the renormalisation constants with our Clover matrix element, we observe a significant improvement in the chiral behaviour of $B_K$.

The Effects of Flavor Changing Neutral Current and Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix

We study the effects of tree-level flavor changing neutral current and its present status with Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Especially, we remark the effects of flavor changing neutral current on the unitary triangle of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. In the case when the unitarity is nearly conserved, we find that the allowed FCNC in the $db$ sector is $\left| {{z_d}^{db}}/{V_{CKM}^{td} {V_{CKM}^{tb}}^\ast} \right| \sim O({10}^{-2})$, from the evaluation of the present bounds for the mixing size of neutral $B$ meson ($x_d$), and the $CP$ violation parameter in the neutral $K$ meson ($ε$). Although the size is small, the new physics due to the tree-level FCNC in the $db$ sector is expected to be visible in the $B \rightarrow X_d \, l^+ \, l^- $ and the $CP$ asymmetries in the neutral $B$ meson system. In the case when the unitarity is violated and the quadrangle is conserved, the FCNC is large enough, i.e. $\left| {{z_d}^{db}}/{V_{CKM}^{td} {V_{CKM}^{tb}}^\ast} \right| \sim O(1)$. Then, a significant contribution is also expected in the inclusive $B \rightarrow X_d \, γ$ decay.

$b \to s(d) γ$ with a Vector-like Quark as Fourth-generation

We study the implications of a vector-like quark, especially a down-type vector-like quark in $b \rightarrow s(d) γ$ including the neutral Higgs in the calculation. After analyzing some possible constraints for the mixing, the contribution may be significant for the $b \rightarrow d γ$, but not for the $b \rightarrow s γ$. We also find that the FCNC among ordinary quarks vanishes for a special form of down-type quark mass matrix.

Numerical Simulations of an SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R-symmetric Higgs-Yukawa Model on the QUADRICS Q16

We report on our work on the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R symmetric Higgs Yukawa Model with mirror fermion action. Our model describes a fermion Higgs system in the limit of vanishing gauge coupling. Setting the bare Yukawa coupling of the mirror fermions G_χto zero, we want to determine the triviality bounds on the renormalized Yukawa coupling of the fermions G_{Rψ} and the scalar self-coupling g_R on 8^3x16 and 16^3x32 lattices.

Simple But Efficient Tests of QCD from Tau Decays$^{*)}$

We review the determinations of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from the inclusive and exclusive modes of $τ$-decays. The most recent $τ$-data provide the average value $ α_ s \left(M^2_τ\right)\simeq 0.347\pm 0.030 $ corresponding to $ α_ s \left(M^2_Z \right) \simeq 0.121\pm 0.003 \pm 0.001.$ The values of the QCD vacuum condensates extracted from the inclusive weighted-moment distributions are consistent with the ones from QCD spectral sum rules. Accurate estimates and further precision tests should be reached in the next $τ$C/B-factory machines. The $M_τ$-stability test from the $ e^+e^- \longrightarrow I=1 $ hadron data is also discussed.

The Great Inequality In A Hamiltonian Planetary Theory

The Jupiter-Saturn 2:5 near-commensurability is analyzed in a fully analytic Hamiltonian planetary theory. Computations for the Sun-Jupiter-Saturn system, extending to the third order of the masses and to the 8th degree in the eccentricities and inclinations, reveal an unexpectedly sensitive dependence of the solution on initial data and its likely nonconvergence. The source of the sensitivity and apparent lack of convergence is this near-commensurability, the so-called great inequality. This indicates that simple averaging, still common in current semi-analytic planetary theories, may not be an adequate technique to obtain information on the long-term dynamics of the Solar System. Preliminary results suggest that these difficulties can be overcome by using resonant normal forms.

Finite Size Effects on the QCD Spectrum Revisited

We have continued our study of finite size effects in the QCD spectrum on lattices ranging in size from $8^3\times 24$ to $16^3\times24$. We have increased our statistics for quark mass $am_q=0.025$ for the smallest lattice size. In addition, we have studied quark mass 0.0125 for lattice sizes $12^3\times24$ and $16^3\times24$. These lattice sizes correspond to a box 1.8--3.6 fm on a side when the rho mass at zero quark mass is used to set the scale. We discuss the nucleon to rho mass ratio at a smaller value of $m_π/m_ρ$ than previously studied with two dynamical flavors.
