Coherent radiation of an ultra-relativistic charged particle channeled in a periodically bent crystal

Abstract

We suggest a new type of the undulator radiation which is generated by an ultra-relativistic particle channeled along a periodically bent crystallographic plane or axis. The electromagnetic radiation arises mainly due to the bending of the particle's trajectory, which follows the shape of the channel. The parameters of this undulator, which totally define the spectrum and the angular distribution of the radiation (both spontaneous and stimulated), depend on the type of the crystal and the crystallographic plane (axis), on the type of a projectile and its energy, and on the shape of the bent channel, and, thus, can be varied significantly by varying these characteristics. As an example, we consider the acoustically induced radiation (AIR) which is generated by ultra-relativistic particles channeled in a crystal which is bent by a transverse acoustic wave. The AIR mechanism allows to make the undulator with the main parameters varying in wide ranges, which are inaccessible in the undulators based on the motion of particles in the periodic magnetic fields and also in the field of the laser radiation. The intensity of AIR can be easily made larger than the intensity of the radiation in a linear crystal and can be varied in a wide range by varying the frequency and the amplitude of the acoustic wave in the crystal. A possibility to generate stimulated emission of high-energy photons (in keV - MeV region) is also discussed.

AloHEP Software: A luminosity optimizer for High Energy Physics colliders

The luminosity quoted for proposed particle colliders is usually derived from the analytic geometric formula, which assumes head-on collisions of identical, rigid Gaussian bunches. For the new generation of asymmetric machines---in particular lepton--hadron colliders such as the EIC, LHeC and FCC-eh---this assumption can misestimate the luminosity, because it ignores a few coupled effects that act in the interaction region such as hourglass effect, crossing angle, and mutual electromagnetic (beam--beam) deformation of the colliding bunches. We present \textbf{AloHEP} (A luminosity optimizer for High Energy Physics), an open-source, cross-platform Java application that simulates the interaction region of both symmetric and asymmetric colliders. AloHEP represents each bunch by an ensemble of macroparticles deposited on the grid with a cloud-in-cell scheme, and slices the crossing longitudinally. On each transverse slice it solves the two-dimensional electrostatic problem by a direct Green's-function convolution, then obtains the beam--beam forces by finite differencing and continuous bicubic interpolation. The hourglass effect, finite crossing angle and beam--beam pinch/disruption can be enabled independently, and the two colliding beams may consist of entirely different species (leptons, protons, heavy ions). A JSON-backed parameter database and an interactive graphical interface make AloHEP a flexible tool for the rapid prototyping of realistic luminosity estimates. We verify that the code reproduces the analytic geometric luminosity in the appropriate limit and present scaling, grid-convergence and asymmetric-collider benchmarks.

Muon acceleration at J-PARC

Muon acceleration is a key technology for producing low-emittance muon beams over a wide energy range. Various acceleration schemes have been proposed for applications ranging from low-energy $μ$SR and precision particle-physics measurements to neutrino factories and muon colliders. Experimental demonstrations of muon acceleration, however, have so far been limited. At J-PARC, a positive-muon accelerator based on the production and acceleration of ultraslow muons is being developed, and in 2024 the first RF acceleration of positive muons was demonstrated. In this review, we provide a brief overview of muon-acceleration methods and related experiments, and then review the acceleration method, current status, and future prospects at J-PARC.
