On pionic hydrogen. Quantum field theoretic, relativistic covariant and model-independent approach

Abstract

We consider pionic hydrogen A_(pi p), the bound pi^- p state. Within the quantum field theoretic and relativistic covariant approach we calculate the shift and width of the energy level of the ground state of pionic hydrogen caused by strong low-energy interactions treated perturbatively. The generalization of the Deser-Goldberger-Baumann-Thirring (DGBT) formulas (Phys. Rev. 96, 774 (1954)) is given. The generalized DGBT formulas for the energy level displacement of the ground state of pionic hydrogen contain the non-perturbative and model-independent correction about 1%, caused by the relativistic covariant smearing of the wave function of the ground state around origin. This non-perturbative correction is very important for the precise extraction of the S-wave scattering lengths of pion-nucleon scattering from the experimental data on the energy level displacements in pionic hydrogen by the PSI Collaboration. In addition the shift of the energy level of the ground state of pionic hydrogen is improved by the second order correction of strong low-energy interactions which is about 0.1%. This testifies the applicability of the perturbative treatment of strong low-energy interactions to the analysis of pionic hydrogen. We show that the width of the energy level of the ground state of pionic hydrogen is valid to all order of perturbation theory in strong low-energy interactions.

First flow harmonic of net baryon from directed diffusion of stopped baryons

We propose a new ansatz for baryon deposition that incorporates salient features from the baryon junction picture. The deposited baryon is coupled to a tilted fireball and deployed to study the directed flow of identified hadrons in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7-200$ GeV. We find a parameter space in the model where the resulting hydrodynamic evolution generates a suitable flow to describe the directed flow $v_1$ of identified hadrons including the observed double sign change between $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=7.7-39$ GeV of the rapidity slopes of the net proton and the net lambda $v_1$. Our model that includes stopping of baryons and their consequent diffusion within a relativistic hydrodynamic framework along with a crossover equation of state as obtained from lattice QCD calculations provides a noncritical baryonic baseline that is crucial in our ongoing searches for the QCD critical point and the initial strong electromagnetic field.

Non-locality function of microscopic optical potentials from Skyrme-based nuclear structure models at low energies

The non-locality of the imaginary part of the microscopic optical potential is investigated for neutron elastic scattering on $^{16}$O, $^{40}$Ca, $^{48}$Ca, and $^{208}$Pb at incident energies up to 30~MeV. The potential is derived within the particle-vibration coupling framework using fully self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock plus RPA calculations with the SLy5 interaction, without \textit{ad hoc} adjustable parameters. By fitting the non-locality coordinate dependence of the absorptive potential $W(R,s) \equiv \mathrm{Im}\,ΔΣ$, where $ΔΣ$ is the dynamical part of the nucleon self-energy, to a Gaussian form at representative volume and surface radial positions, we extract the radius- and energy-dependent non-locality function $β(R,E)$, whose values range from $1.01$ to $2.03$~fm, with a clear dependence on radial position, incident energy, and target mass. These results demonstrate that, for the absorptive part of the optical potential, a single universal constant such as the Perey--Buck value $β= 0.85$~fm cannot capture the radial, energy, and target-mass dependence of the non-locality, and that nucleus-dependent, energy-dependent, and radially-resolved descriptions of the absorptive potential $W$ are required for precision nuclear reaction calculations.

Probing Dense Nuclear Matter at Small-x: A workflow for a global analysis framework

The dipole model provides a powerful framework for describing high-energy nuclear interactions, particularly in the regime of dense gluonic matter. However, accurately evolving the dipole--nucleus scattering amplitude remains a major computational challenge because it is governed by nonlinear QCD evolution equations. To address this, we investigate a machine learning (ML) model as an efficient surrogate for the conventional numerical evolution. These ML-based approximations dramatically reduce the computational cost of global analyses while maintaining the accuracy required to describe a broad range of experimental data. We systematically evaluate the ML results for accuracy, computational efficiency, and ability to capture essential features of dipole evolution in nuclear environments. These computational advancements will enable global analyses of diverse datasets within both the dipole and parton model frameworks, providing a more rigorous probe of nuclear structure in the dense regime. Comparing both descriptions within a common fitting framework can provide precise constraints on the gluon distributions and advance our understanding of the quark and gluon structure of nuclei, particularly in the small-x region.
