Effective lagrangian approach to structure of selected nuclei far from sta bility

Abstract

The convergence of the effective field theory (EFT) approach of Furnstahl, Serot and Tang to the nuclear many-body problem is studied by applying it to selected doubly-magic nuclei far from stability. An independently developed code, which can incorporate various levels of approximation of the chiral effective lagrangi an, is used to solve the self-consistent relativistic Hartree equations. Results are obtained for ground-state properties such as binding energies, single-parti cle level structure, and densities of the selected spherical, doubly-magic nucle i 132-Sn, 100-Sn and 48-Ni, 78-Ni. Calculated spectra of neigh boring nuclei differing by one particle or one hole show agreement with the most recent experimental data. Predictions for nucleon densities are presented.

Spatial imaging of polarized deuterons at the Electron-Ion Collider

We study diffractive vector meson production at small-$x$ in the collision of electrons and polarized deuterons $e+d^{\uparrow}$. We consider the polarization dependence of the nuclear wave function of the deuteron, which results in an azimuthal angular dependence of the produced vector meson when the deuteron is transversely polarized. The Fourier coefficients extracted from the azimuthal angular dependence of the vector meson differential cross-section exhibit notable differences between longitudinally and transversely polarized deuterons. The angular dependence of the extracted effective deuteron radius provides direct insight into the structure of the polarized deuteron wave function. Furthermore, we observe slightly increased gluon saturation effects when the deuteron is longitudinally polarized compared to the transversely polarized case. The small-$x$ observables studied in this work will be accessible at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Spin Teleportation via Bell-Triplet States Emergent from Proton-Proton Scattering

Entanglement is a key resource in quantum information science, yet its properties and applications in nuclear systems remain largely unexplored. Here, using proton-proton scattering as a quantum laboratory, we report the emergence of a near-pure Bell-triplet state at a laboratory energy of 151 MeV and a center-of-mass scattering angle of 90 degrees. In this unique kinematic regime, the scattering amplitude functions as a transition operator connecting distinct Bell states. Building upon this emergent resource, we propose a quantum teleportation protocol for proton spins, exploiting the intrinsic Hamiltonian of the strong interaction to perform the requisite Bell measurement effectively. These findings effectively bridge few-body nuclear physics and quantum technology, establishing proton-proton scattering as both a source of high-fidelity entanglement and a natural processor for quantum information.

Hadronic description of nuclear matter and neutron star properties

The composition of the neutron star is one of the most fundamental and long-standing problems in nuclear- and astro-physics. The known properties of nuclear matter, together with the astronomical observations, impose the stringent and interconnected constraints on the theoretical descriptions. In this work, by using the most general quantum hadrodynamics model including $σ, ω, ρ$ and $a_0$ in addition to nucleons, and performing a Bayesian joint analysis of experimental nuclear matter data, the heavy-ion flow pressure, and astrophysical observations including the mass-radius inferences of PSR J0740+6620, PSR J0437$-$4715, PSR J0614$-$3329 and HESS J1731$-$347 and the tidal posterior of GW170817, we point out that the nuclear matter made of only hadrons can provide a unified description of nuclear matter properties and astrophysical observations. In addition, we find that the speed of sound in the GQHD develops a non-monotonic, peak-like structure which is absent in the Walecka-type models TM1, NL3 and FSU-$\delta6.7$. This soft-to-stiff transition, accompanied by a pronounced softening of the symmetry energy, results in small size intermediate mass neutron stars, $R_{1.4}\simeq (11.1-11.4)$~km, together with the maximum mass $(2.2-2.3)M_\odot$, and, to our knowledge, has not been found before in the Walecka-type relativistic mean-field models. What we find here indicate that the sequential measurement of neutron star mass and radius by the next generation facilities, especially that of the intermediate mass neutron stars, is crucial for distinguishing the pure nucleonic stars from the hybrid ones.
