Multiplicity distributions associated to subthreshold events in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract

Subthreshold events (pion production, for instance) at energies $E< m_π$ are treated as rare events. The associated multiplicity distribution $P_c (n)$ and the unconstrained distribution P(n), when there is no rare event-trigger, are related by the model independent relation $P_c (n) = {n^2 \over \average{n^2}} P(n)$. This relation, and in particular its improved version inspired in clustering of nucleons, is in fair agreement with data. Moreover, it allows to extract from the multiplicity data information on the number of nucleons involved in meson production processes, occuring at energies below the production threshold in free nucleon collisions.

Dynamical Triaxial Correlations in the Charge Radii of Neutron-Rich Ruthenium Isotopes

Nuclear charge radii are fundamental observables that track changes in nuclear structure. Recent measurements of neutron-rich Ru isotopes, interpreted using mean-field density-functional calculations, have highlighted the sensitivity of charge radii to static triaxial deformation. Whether dynamical shape fluctuations involving triaxial configurations---known to affect both nuclear ground- and excited-state properties---can reshape the charge-radii evolution remains unresolved. In this Letter, we investigate the charge radii of even-even neutron-rich $^{106-114}$Ru within a nuclear density-functional framework that combines three-dimensional angular-momentum projection with the generator-coordinate method. Including dynamical triaxial shape fluctuations yields charge radii in good agreement with experiment, without introducing additional adjustable parameters. By successively incorporating static triaxial deformation, dynamical axial shape fluctuations, and dynamical triaxial shape fluctuations, we trace how the predicted charge radii change at each step. These results demonstrate that triaxial shape dynamics can leave a substantial imprint on charge radii. They also inform the interpretation of experimental charge-radius measurements used to trace the evolution of nuclear structure, since charge radii alone cannot uniquely determine the underlying nuclear shape.

Parameter dependence of the mapping of the mean-field Ising model onto QCD in the first-order phase transition regime

We map the mean-field Ising equation of state onto the QCD phase diagram and investigate how scaling parameters alter the metastable and unstable regions, as well as the symmetrized pressure and density along an isotherm on the QCD $T-μ_B$ phase plane. We find that, for both the conventional mapping scheme and the scheme valid in the small-quark-mass limit, increasing the scaling parameters $w$ and $ρ$ narrows the metastable and unstable regions. In the small-quark-mass-limit scheme, larger $w$ and $ρ$ reduce both the Ising-symmetrized pressure and density. For the conventional scheme, increasing $w$ reduces these quantities, while increasing $ρ$ raises the Ising-symmetrized pressure and has only a small effect on the density.

Deformability of neutron-deficient Sn nuclei studied with semi-realistic interaction

Although Sn nuclei have long been considered typical spherical nuclei, the $E2$ transitions in neutron-deficient Sn nuclei have posed a puzzle. We argue that their deformability may resolve this issue, based on self-consistent calculations with a semi-realistic interaction. The significant role of the pseudo-spin symmetry, which is attributed to the effects of the tensor force, is also discussed.
