Weak proton capture on 3He

Abstract

The astrophysical S-factor for the proton weak capture on 3He is calculated with correlated-hyperspherical-harmonics bound and continuum wave functions corresponding to realistic Hamiltonians consisting of the Argonne v14 or Argonne v18 two-nucleon and Urbana-VIII or Urbana-IX three-nucleon interactions. The nuclear weak charge and current operators have vector and axial-vector components, that include one- and many-body terms. All possible multipole transitions connecting any of the p 3He S- and P-wave channels to the 4He bound state are considered. The S-factor at a p 3He center-of-mass energy of 10 keV, close to the Gamow-peak energy, is predicted to be 10.1 10^{-20} keV b with the AV18/UIX Hamiltonian, a factor of about 4.5 larger than the value adopted in the standard solar model. The P-wave transitions are found to be important, contributing about 40 % of the calculated S-factor. The energy dependence is rather weak: the AV18/UIX zero-energy S-factor is 9.64 10^{-20} keV b, only 5 % smaller than the 10 keV result quoted above. The model dependence is also found to be weak: the zero-energy S-factor is calculated to be 10.2 10^{-20} keV b with the older AV14/UVIII model, only 6 % larger than the AV18/UIX result. Our best estimate for the S-factor at 10 keV is therefore (10.1 \pm 0.6) 10^{-20} keV b, when the theoretical uncertainty due to the model dependence is included. This value for the calculated S-factor is not as large as determined in fits to the Super-Kamiokande data in which the hep flux normalization is free. However, the precise calculation of the S-factor and the consequent absolute prediction for the hep neutrino flux will allow much greater discrimination among proposed solar neutrino oscillation solutions.

$^6$He structure from semiclassical 3D models based on $\textit{ab initio}$ spatial correlations

We construct semiclassical 3D models based on $\textit{ab initio}$ no-core shell model calculated two-body spatial correlations, which represent the preferred spatial configuration of nucleons for the ground state of $^6$He. We demonstrate that the presence of the two valence neutrons distorts and flattens the $α$ core in $^6$He, marking a clear departure from the tetrahedral configuration of free $^4$He, and that the two valence neutrons and the center of mass of the $α$ cluster ($α$-CM) are roughly located at the three distinct vertices of an equilateral triangle. We compute the geometric parameters that commonly characterize $^6$He structure, 1) $θ_{nn}$, the opening angle of the two valence neutrons with respect to $α$-CM, and 2) $r_{nn}$, the root-mean-square separation between the two valence neutrons. Refining the model with uncertainty estimation, we obtain $θ_{nn}= 58.5^{+5.4}_{-6.2}$ degrees and $r_{nn}= 4.12^{+0.37}_{-0.43}$ fm, agreeing with those calculated via a phenomenologically modified continuum-discretized coupled-channels method, while an interferometry experiment obtained a marginally higher $r_{nn}$.

ECC3: a global model for evaporation residue cross sections in the synthesis of superheavy nuclei

We present ECC3, an efficient model for evaporation residue (ER) cross sections in heavy-ion fusion reactions from light systems to superheavy-element synthesis. The ER cross section is factorized into capture, described by the universal empirical coupled channel (ECC2) model; compound-nucleus formation, given by the Zagrebaev-Greiner empirical Fermi function of the charge product; and survival against fission, obtained from a simplified HIVAP-type statistical-decay cascade. The capture sector is inherited unchanged from ECC2 and reproduces 348 measured capture excitation functions with a logarithmic RMSD of 0.29. A single set of model parameters for the formation and survival of compound nuclei is fitted to 60 measured ER excitation functions with the corresponding RMSD of 0.27. About 95\% of both the capture and ER systems are reproduced within a factor of four. Because the fitted parameters are constrained by light, medium-mass and superheavy systems rather than anchored to the measured superheavy region, extrapolation to unmeasured reactions is well controlled. The model also resolves the individual $xn$ channels. It reproduces the measured $3n$--$5n$ excitation functions of $^{19}$F+$^{188}$Os and the systematic charge dependence of the maximal channel cross section for $^{48}$Ca-, $^{50}$Ti- and $^{54}$Cr-induced reactions. For the three element-119 reactions $^{50}$Ti+$^{249}$Bk, $^{54}$Cr+$^{243}$Am and $^{51}$V+$^{248}$Cm, it predicts $4n$ dominance, with maximum cross sections of 13.2 fb, 2.64 fb and 1.56 fb, respectively.

Extraction of All Partial-Wave Interaction Parameters via Femtoscopy: The Central-Force Case

We present a universal femtoscopic method to extract the source size and central-force interaction parameters for arbitrary partial waves from experimental data, with the interaction parameters defined in the effective-range expansion. The method is based on the Wronskian determinant and is applicable to both the Coulomb and non-Coulomb cases. This approach is numerically verified against simulated neutron-neutron and proton-proton correlation data obtained from the Reid potential.
