A Further Measurement of the beta-Delayed alpha-Particle Emission of 16N

Abstract

We measured the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission spectrum of 16N with a sensitivity for beta-decay branching ratios of the order of 10-10. The 16N nuclei were produced using the d(15N,16N)p reaction with 70 MeV 15N beams and a deuterium gas target 7.5 cm long at a pressure of 1250 torr. The 16N nuclei were collected (over 10 s) using a thin aluminum foil with an areal density of 180 mu g/cm2 tilted at 7 Deg with respect to the beam. The activity was transferred to the counting area by means of a stepping motor in less than 3 s with the counting carried out over 8 s. The beta-delayed alpha-particles were measured using a time of flight method to achieve a sufficiently low background. Standard calibration sources (148Gd, 241Am, 208,209Po, and 227Ac) as well as alpha-particles and 7Li from the 10B(n,alpha)7Li reaction were used for an accurate energy calibration. The energy resolution of the catcher foil (180-220 keV) was calculated and the time of flight resolution (3-10 nsec) was measured using the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission from 8Li that was produced using the d(7Li,8Li)p reaction with the same setup. The line shape was corrected to account for the variation in the energy and time resolution and a high statistics spectrum of the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of 16N is reported. However, our data (as well as earlier Mainz data and unpublished Seattle data) do not agree with an earlier measurement of the beta-delayed alpha-particle emission of 16N taken at TRIUMF after averaging over the energy resolution of our collection system. This disagreement, amongst other issues, prohibits accurate inclusion of the f-wave component in the R-matrix analysis.

Measurement of the $γγ\to ττ$ cross section and constraints on the anomalous magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton in ultraperipheral PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The production of $τ$ lepton pairs via photon-photon fusion, $γγ\to ττ$, is studied in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The dataset, collected by the CMS experiment in 2018, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.70 nb$^{-1}$. Four different $τ^+τ^-$ decay final states are analyzed. A simultaneous likelihood fit to the measured lepton transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) distributions, which incorporates information from both spectral shape and normalization, is used to constrain the anomalous magnetic moment of the $τ$ lepton, $a_τ$, and to extract the cross section of the process. The measured 95% CL interval for $a_τ$ is $-$0.039 $\lt$ $a_τ$ $\lt$ 0.032. The fiducial cross section, $σ_{γγ\to ττ}^\text{fid}$ = 555$^{+60}_{-14}$ $μ$b for tau leptons with $p_\mathrm{T}^τ$ $\gt$ 1 GeV and pseudorapidity $\lvertη^τ\rvert$ $\lt$ 3, is the most precise measurement for this process at the LHC to date and is in agreement with next-to-leading-order quantum electrodynamics predictions.

Threshold resonances in relativistic $^{16}$O and $^{22}$Ne dissociation

The nuclear emulsion method is applied to study binary dissociation leading to the formation of $α$-particles from $^{16}$O nuclei at 3.65 GeV per nucleon and $^{22}$Ne nuclei at 3.22 GeV per nucleon. The invariant mass distribution for the $^{16}$O$\to$$^{12}$C(0$^+_1$)+$α$ channel indicates decays of the $^{16}$O(0$^+_6$) excitation, whose probability exceeds the estimate for the $^{12}$C(0$^+_2$)+$α$ channel by a factor of 20. The invariant mass distribution for $^{22}$Ne$\to$$^{18}$O+$α$ exhibits a peak corresponding to $^{22}$Ne excitations around 11.6 MeV.

Measurement of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integrand for proton and deuteron from 200 to 1400 MeV

New data for the total inclusive helicity-dependent cross section for the proton and deuteron were obtained in the photon energy interval 200-1400 MeV. The experiment was performed at the A2 tagged-photon facility of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) using a circularly polarized photon beam and longitudinally polarized proton and deuteron targets. The reaction products were detected using the large-acceptance Crystal Ball/TAPS calorimeter, which covers 97% of the full solid angle. These new results, obtained with fine energy binning, significantly expand both the quantity and the quality of the available data for these observables and enable a detailed comparison with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. From the combination of the results for the deuteron and the proton, important information could also be extracted for the free neutron. Based on these data, and using existing models to evaluate the missing contributions from unmeasured photon energy regions, the validity of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule has been verified for the proton, the neutron, and the deuteron. These new data provide a precise experimental benchmark for theoretical models used to study nucleons, both in their free state and when embedded in the nuclear medium.
