Sub-threshold phi-meson yield in central 58Ni+58Ni collisions

Abstract

The $ϕ$-meson production cross section is measured for the first time at a sub-threshold energy of 1.93 AGeV in \nuc{58}{Ni}+\nuc{58}{Ni} central collisions. The $ϕ$ data were obtained within the acceptance of the CDC/Barrel subsystem of FOPI. For a sample of $4.7\cdot 10^6$ central events, after background subtraction, 23 candidates were observed. Extensive GEANT simulations of the detector performance are shown in a thorough comparison to the real response, aiming at a good understanding of the apparatus and at a trustable determination of the efficiencies, production probability and possible systematic errors. A filter procedure is elaborated, which is meant to facilitate the comparison of any theoretical calculation or new data with the current ones. How to extrapolate the present value to a $ϕ$-meson cross section in $4π$ is also discussed. This result on pseudo-vector mesons can now be compared to existing experimental knowledge for the same reaction at the same incident energy for various outgoing channels, $K^+$ and $K^-$ included. A significant fraction (at least 20%) of the $K^-$-mesons is originating in the decay of the $ϕ$, supporting the statement that the two channels are strongly correlated.

Precise and accurate nuclear electric quadrupole moment of $^{223}$Ra from molecular spectroscopy

Nuclear electric quadrupole moments of unstable isotopes are commonly extracted from laser spectroscopy of the atomic hyperfine structure, where the accuracy is limited to the several-percent level by the available electric-field-gradient (EFG) calculations. In this study, we determine the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of $^{223}$Ra (half-life $t_{1/2} = 11.4$ d) from hyperfine-resolved collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy of the radioactive molecule $^{223}$Ra$^{19}$F. The $X\,^2Σ^+$ electronic ground state of RaF provides a large axial EFG at the radium nucleus that can be calculated with relativistic coupled-cluster theory to sub-percent accuracy. Together with a three-fold improvement in spectral resolution over previous fast-beam measurements of radioactive molecules, this yields $Q_s = +1.211(7)_\mathrm{stat}(2)_\mathrm{syst}(5)_\mathrm{theo}\,e\mathrm{b}$ for $^{223}$Ra with a total uncertainty of 0.73%, approximately three times better than atomic and ionic determinations. This result demonstrates that molecular spectroscopy can provide access to the electromagnetic structure of unstable nuclei with a precision competitive with, and in favorable cases better than, atomic spectroscopy, and may thus be envisioned for studies beyond the limitations of current radioactive-atom experiments.

Cumulative protons and pions at the intermediate energies in the FRAGM experiment

One of the important research objectives of the FRAGM experiment operating at the TWAC heavy-ion accelerator-storage complex was the study of particle production in the cumulative region. Differential cross sections were measured for the production of pions - resulting from the fragmentation of carbon nuclei at an energy of 3.2 GeV/nucleon, as well as protons with energy range from 300 to 2000 MeV/nucleon at an angle of 3.5 degrees relative to the incident ion beam. The parameterization of cumulative effect used in experiments investigating nucleus-nucleus interactions is discussed. It is shown, that the energy dependencies of these parameters are analogous to those observed in nucleon-nucleus interactions and indicate the presence of nuclear scaling behavior.

Search for the 229Pa Parity Doublet via Internal-Conversion Spectroscopy at FRIB

The radioisotope $^{229}$Pa is predicted to possess a nearly degenerate ground-state parity doublet. Previous $γ$-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy suggests a splitting of $ΔE = (60\pm 50)~\mathrm{eV}$, although the doublet's existence remains unconfirmed. Such a small splitting would give $^{229}$Pa an exceptionally large enhancement of symmetry-violating nuclear properties. However, the splitting, and with it the sensitivity of $^{229}$Pa to CP-violating physics, remains uncertain by orders of magnitude. We propose an experiment to measure this splitting with sub-eV precision within a few days of measurement time by using delayed-coincidence internal-conversion spectroscopy of $^{229}$Pa ions produced by the electron-capture decay of $^{229}$U$^{+}$ ions stored in a Penning trap at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). This measurement would provide the key nuclear-structure input needed to establish $^{229}$Pa as a leading candidate for next-generation atomic and molecular electric-dipole-moment (EDM) experiments.
