The Wandering Must Continue: Pure Mathematicians as Rangers of the North

Pure mathematics is an honest barometer of a civilization's scientific capacity, maintaining an unwritten culture of rigor, structural perception, and intellectual honesty whose primary service is not merely proving theorems, but cultivating human judgment. In an era of automated theorem generation and formal verification, this essay argues that establishing a result and understanding both why it holds and why it matters remain distinct achievements, and outlines concrete institutional mechanisms to protect the exploratory core of the discipline.

It is time for a New Deal for mathematics

The AI labs' vision is based on extraction (of data, wealth, and political power). Mathematicians must oppose it, moving past personal reflections and towards reforming mathematics' social contract.
