$b$-minimality

Abstract

We introduce a new notion of tame geometry for structures admitting an abstract notion of balls. The notion is named b-minimality and is based on definable families of points and balls. We develop a dimension theory and prove a cell decomposition theorem for b-minimal structures. We show that b-minimality applies to the theory of Henselian valued fields of characteristic zero, generalizing work by Denef - Pas. Structures which are o-minimal, v-minimal, or p-minimal and which satisfy some slight extra conditions are also b-minimal, but b-minimality leaves more room for nontrivial expansions. The b-minimal setting is intended to be a natural framework for the construction of Euler characteristics and motivic or p-adic integrals. The b-minimal cell decomposition is a generalization of concepts of P. J. Cohen, J. Denef, and the link between cell decomposition and integration was first made by Denef.

More on expressibility of satisfiability in submodels and extensions

We study expressibility in infinitary languages of the modal operators associated with satisfiability of sentences of these languages in submodels and extensions of models. We give a syntactic criterion for expressibility in finitary predicate languages, show that in many cases infinitary languages are closed under the operator associated with submodels, and that this is so in any language with a purely monadic signature. Finally, we prove that in finitary or strongly compact languages, the operator associated with extensions, though can be inexpressible by a single sentence, is always expressible by a universal theory, in striking contrast with the submodel case.

Amenable C-sequences and ineffability in L

We give a relative consistency counterexample to the conjecture of Inamdar and Rinot that every regular uncountable cardinal carrying no amenable C-sequence is ineffable in the constructible universe L. The existence of a $Π^2_1$-indescribable cardinal is equiconsistent with the existence of a $Π^2_1$-indescribable cardinal carrying no amenable C-sequence and not ineffable in L. For every ground-model C-sequence on a weakly compact cardinal $κ$, generalized Hechler forcing adds a club D with $D\capβ\subseteq C_β$ at stationarily many inaccessible indices. We use this capture theorem in an iteration of length $κ^+$ after Johnstone's local lottery preparation.

Omitting Types for Infinitary Real-Valued Logic: A Topological Perspective

For countable vocabularies, we extend the omitting types theorem for countable fragments of infinitary logic to Keisler's general real-valued structures by proving that the space of Henkin types of each such fragment is Čech-complete. The structures interpret function symbols arbitrarily and predicate symbols by bounded real-valued functions, while each formula carries a bound of its own. This extends the setting of Eagle's theorem from metric structures with a prescribed master metric to general structures whose vocabulary prescribes the sorts and bounds of the symbols. Following Keisler and Miller's treatment of logic without equality, we build models from closed terms. Morley's Baire category method then gives every satisfiable theory on a countable fragment a model with countable sorts omitting any countable family of types whose closed-term instances have empty interior in the space of Henkin types satisfying the theory.
