Remarks on non-compact complete Ricci expanding solitons

Abstract

In this paper, we study gradient Ricci expanding solitons $(X,g)$ satisfying $$ Rc=cg+D^2f, $$ where $Rc$ is the Ricci curvature, $c<0$ is a constant, and $D^2f$ is the Hessian of the potential function $f$ on $X$. We show that for a gradient expanding soliton $(X,g)$ with non-negative Ricci curvature, the scalar curvature $R$ has at least one maximum point on $X$, which is the only minimum point of the potential function $f$. Furthermore, $R>0$ on $X$ unless $(X,g)$ is Ricci flat. We also show that there is exponentially decay for scalar curvature for $ε$-pinched complete non-compact expanding solitons.

A generalization of the Perelman gluing theorem and applications

We extend a positive Ricci curvature gluing theorem of Perelman to a range of positive intermediate curvature conditions, ranging from positive scalar curvature up to (and including) positive sectional curvature. As an application of this, we demonstrate that the observer moduli space of metrics with positive intermediate Ricci curvatures can have non-trivial higher homotopy groups. Further applications include deriving a sufficient condition for the existence of a metric with positive intermediate Ricci curvature and totally geodesic boundary.

Covariant derivatives in the representation-valued Bott-Shulman-Stasheff and Weil complex

For a Lie groupoid $G$, the differential forms on its nerve comprise a double complex. A natural question is if this statement extends to forms with values in a representation $V$ of $G$. In this paper, we research two types of covariant derivatives which commute with the simplicial differential, yielding two types of curved double complexes of forms with coefficients in $V$. The naive approach is to consider a linear connection $\nabla$ on $V$, in which case $d^\nabla$ commutes with the simplicial differential if and only if $\nabla$ satisfies a certain (restrictive) invariance condition. The heart of this paper focuses on another, more compelling approach: using a multiplicative Ehresmann connection for a bundle of ideals. In this case, we obtain a geometrically richer curved double complex, where the cochain map is given by the horizontal exterior covariant derivative $D$, which generalizes the well-known operator from the theory of principal bundles. Moreover, both differential operators $d^\nabla$ and $D$ are researched in the infinitesimal setting of Lie algebroids, as well as their relationship with the van Est map. We conclude by using the operator $D$ to study the curvature of an (infinitesimal) multiplicative Ehresmann connection.

Montel's theorem and tautness in calibrated geometry

We relate the hyperbolicity of a calibrated manifold $(X, ϕ)$ to the analytic properties of the space of Smith immersions $\mathrm{SmIm}(B^k, X)$ from the Poincare $k$-ball into $X$. In particular, we establish the following calibrated analogue of a theorem of Royden: if $X$ is $ϕ$-saturated, then $R_ϕ$- and $K_ϕ$-hyperbolicity coincide, and either implies the equicontinuity of $\mathrm{SmIm}(B^k, X)$ with respect to the $ϕ$-distance. This yields a Montel theorem for compact $ϕ$-saturated calibrated manifolds as an immediate corollary. Our primary technical tool is a new Schwarz lemma for Smith immersions from $B^k$ into $X$, which is of independent interest. In a similar spirit, we also prove a calibrated analogue of Kiernan's theorem to the effect that the $K_ϕ$-hyperbolicity of $X$ is almost equivalent to $\mathrm{SmIm}(B^k, X)$ being a normal family. Finally, we prove that bounded domains in flat euclidean space are $R_ϕ$-hyperbolic for any calibration $ϕ$, and we investigate the hyperbolicity of products and discrete quotients.
