Barrier Paradox in the Klein Zone

Abstract

We study the solutions for a one-dimensional electrostatic potential in the Dirac equation when the incoming wave packet exhibits the Klein paradox (pair production). With a barrier potential we demonstrate the existence of multiple reflections (and transmissions). The antiparticle solutions which are necessarily localized within the barrier region create new pairs with each reflection at the potential walls. Consequently we encounter a new paradox for the barrier because successive outgoing wave amplitudes grow geometrically.

Cosmological pole-skipping, shock waves and quantum chaotic dynamics of de Sitter horizons

We present a systematic analysis of pole-skipping for scalar, Maxwell, and gravitational waves in cosmological spacetimes. Specifically, working in empty de Sitter space and in Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole geometries, we locate the tower of pole-skipping points of such fields and show that they impose nontrivial constraints on the corresponding bulk two-point functions. Focusing on the gravitational sound channel, we then extract the Lyapunov exponent and butterfly velocities that characterize hypothetical dual many-body quantum chaos at each horizon. These chaotic data precisely match the outcome of a gravitational shock wave calculation, confirming that the relevant pole-skipping points encode high-energy scattering of horizon quanta. Interestingly, the butterfly velocities can become superluminal or imaginary, with the latter signaling a spatially modulated propagation of chaos. Assuming that a holographic dual exists, we translate our results into field theory language and propose that the dual theory can be divided into two entangled sectors that capture the black hole and cosmological horizon degrees of freedom. Our results suggest that the black hole sector becomes increasingly nonlocal as the black hole shrinks and that the cosmological horizon sector exhibits behavior compatible with violations of Hermiticity. Finally, we outline simple microscopic toy models, built from long-range and non-Hermitian deformations of the Double Scaled Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (DSSYK)-type chains, that realize these features, providing a concrete arena for future exploration.

Gauge-invariant nonperturbative Wilson action in quantum electrodynamics

By employing the gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG), we study the renormalization group (RG) flow of a manifestly gauge- or Becchi--Rouet--Stora--Tyutin (BRST)-invariant nonperturbative ansatz of the one-particle irreducible (1PI) Wilson action in quantum electrodynamics. The gauge invariance of the Wilson action is \emph{exactly\/} preserved under the RG flow. We explicitly solve the GFERG equation in the leading and partially next-to-leading orders of the large-$N_f$ approximation, where $N_f$ is the number of flavors. We obtain gauge-invariant critical exponents and the gauge-invariant 1PI Wilson action at an infrared (IR) fixed point for~$D<4$, where $D$ is the spacetime dimension.

3d Lovelock gravity and the holographic c-theorem: Proof at all orders and resummation

We prove that 3d Lovelock gravity, the Horndeski theory obtained from the regularized Lovelock invariants in three dimensions, admits a holographic c-theorem at all orders and for arbitrary values of the couplings. In the minisuperspace of domain wall solutions, the equation of the Horndeski scalar is a total derivative at every order, which locks the derivative of the scalar to that of the warp factor along the flows we consider and allows the null energy condition to be integrated into a monotonic c-function. The linear scalar profile of the resulting vacuum breaks the special conformal transformations, so the dual theory is scale-invariant but not conformal, and the central charge is defined as the coefficient of the logarithmic divergence of the on-shell action on the sphere. We compute it exactly for the Gauss-Bonnet case and asymptotically for the full tower, and find that it is linear in the couplings and matches the UV value of the c-function. Since all results depend on the couplings only through two generating functions, we give the resummed Lagrangians, c-functions and central charges in closed form for the choices of couplings that lead to regular black holes, and classify the resummed theories by the positivity of the effective Newton constant on the vacuum and the uniqueness of the vacuum with a non-trivial scalar.
