An E$_6$ interpretation of an $e^+ e^- γγE\!\!\!/_T$ event

Abstract

The lowest-dimensional representation of the group E$_6$ contains both the standard quarks and leptons and a set of exotic quarks and leptons whose decays can involve a series of chains ending in radiative decay of one light neutrino species to another. An example is given based on the decomposition E$_6 \to$ SU(2)$_I \times$ SU(6), where SU(2)$_I$ is an ``inert'' subgroup whose gauge bosons $W_I^{(\pm)}$ and $Z_I$ are all electromagnetically neutral, while SU(6) contains the conventional SU(5) grand-unified group. The possibility is explored that such a chain is responsible for an event observed by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) involving the production in proton-antiproton collisions at $E_{\rm c.m.} = 1.8$ TeV of an electron-positron pair, two photons, and missing energy ($e^+ e^- γγE \!\!\!/_T$).

NuSmear: Fast Simulation of Energy Smearing and Angular Smearing for Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering Events in the GENIE Event Generator

Complete Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of a neutrino experiment typically involves the lengthy and CPU-intensive process of integrating models of incoming neutrino fluxes, event generation, and detector setup. We describe a fast, geometry-independent, GENIE-based system known as NuSmear which provides preliminary simulation of energy smearing and angular smearing for neutrino-nucleon interactions. We discuss NuSmear's simulation methodology, explaining its calculation of reconstructed values through its model-based resolution computation, smearing distributions, and particle detection dependencies. We go on to validate NuSmear's performance as a fast simulation system through a series of internal and external comparisons testing its predictive accuracy and model-adherence. Finally, we briefly explore the potential for future user-customization in NuSmear.

Hunting for Axions in REactor neutrino COherent scattering Detection Experiment

Nuclear power plants are not only vital sources of clean energy but also powerful facilities for probing new physics beyond the Standard Model. Due to the intense gamma-ray flux and an appropriate energy conditions, they are particularly well-suited for searches of light hypothetical particles such as sub-MeV axions and axion-like particles (ALPs). In this work, we propose to search for the ALPs in the REactor Neutrino COherent scattering Detection Experiment (RECODE), where two low-threshold, high-purity germanium detectors are placed at 11 m (near point) and 22 m (far point) from a 3.4 GW nuclear reactor at Sanmen nuclear power plant. With a 10 kg$\cdot$year exposure, we demonstrate that the expected sensitivities to the ALP couplings to the electrons and photons are competitive with or surpass the available results from the beam-dump experiments. A planned upgrade to 100 kg$\cdot$year will fully cover the so-called {$\it$ cosmological triangle} region, probing unexplored parameter space relevant to axions.

Matter-Induced CPT Violation and Earth-Density Stratification Effects in Long-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

We present a unified analysis of two matter-potential systematics in long-baseline (LBL) neutrino oscillation experiments. Matter-induced extrinsic CPT violation produces a non-zero asymmetry $A_{μe}^{CPT} = (P_{μe} - P_{\barμ\bar{e}})/(P_{μe} + P_{\barμ\bar{e}})$, computed here with exact three-flavour matrix-exponentiation propagators for T2K, NO$ν$A, DUNE, and Hyper-Kamiokande; values range from 0.022 to 0.180 at the respective peak energies and differ by up to 9\% between normal and inverted mass orderings. The three-dimensional surface $A_{μe}^{CPT}(E, δ_{CP})$ at the DUNE baseline reveals an entanglement between extrinsic CPT violation and intrinsic CP violation in the high-$L/E$ regime that requires joint statistical treatment. Concurrently, replacing the Preliminary Reference Earth Model (PREM) with a constant path-averaged density introduces a $δ_{CP}$-reconstruction bias below $0.3^{\circ}$ for $L \leq 5000$ km but growing to $17.8^{\circ}$ at $L = 7000$ km and $172.2^{\circ}$ at $L = 12000$ km. Since both effects share the same matter-potential Hamiltonian they must be modelled jointly; a Poisson log-likelihood $χ^2$ statistic with nuisance-parameter pull terms is used to quantify the bias.
