Running couplings in equivariantly gauge-fixed SU(N) Yang--Mills theories

Abstract

In equivariantly gauge-fixed SU(N) Yang--Mills theories, the gauge symmetry is only partially fixed, leaving a subgroup $H\subset SU(N)$ unfixed. Such theories avoid Neuberger's nogo theorem if the subgroup $H$ contains at least the Cartan subgroup $U(1)^{N-1}$, and they are thus non-perturbatively well defined if regulated on a finite lattice. We calculate the one-loop beta function for the coupling $\tilde{g}^2=ξg^2$, where $g$ is the gauge coupling and $ξ$ is the gauge parameter, for a class of subgroups including the cases that $H=U(1)^{N-1}$ or $H=SU(M)\times SU(N-M)\times U(1)$. The coupling $\tilde{g}$ represents the strength of the interaction of the gauge degrees of freedom associated with the coset $SU(N)/H$. We find that $\tilde{g}$, like $g$, is asymptotically free. We solve the renormalization-group equations for the running of the couplings $g$ and $\tilde{g}$, and find that dimensional transmutation takes place also for the coupling $\tilde{g}$, generating a scale $\tildeΛ$ which can be larger than or equal to the scale $Λ$ associated with the gauge coupling $g$, but not smaller. We speculate on the possible implications of these results.

Hamiltonian framework for Chiral Gauge Theories on a Disk Boundary

I propose a Hamiltonian framework for chiral gauge theories (CGT) based on an existing Euclidean formulation, that uses 2n dimensional chiral fermions on the boundary of a 2n+1 dimensional disk. In the original Euclidean formulation, boundary gauge fields were extended into the bulk using $2n + 1$ dimensional gauge field equations of motion (EOM). This creates a bottleneck for constructing a Hamiltonian. I present an alternate proposal for extending the gauge fields into the bulk that is compatible with both a Hamiltonian framework and a Euclidean path integral. Applying this to Abelian gauge fields produces exact expressions of interior fields as a functional of the boundary fields, which can be directly used in a Hamiltonian formulation. Euclidean analysis of the new gauge field extension shows that it can preserve the non-perturbative content of the original construction, including the behavior of topological charge, associated chiral fermion zero modes and an absence of the strong CP problem when applied to the Standard Model. This construction opens up a route to a Hamiltonian treatment and future quantum simulation of CGTs on a disk boundary.

Expansion schemes for finite density QCD equation of state: which one is the best?

The finite density equation of state of QCD is a fundamental quantity for understanding the phase structure of the theory, and also for the realistic modeling of the QCD medium in simulations. While direct lattice simulations at finite density are extremely challenging, several expansion schemes have been devised to extrapolate into the QCD phase diagram. All of these schemes are based on susceptibilities of conserved charges, i.e. derivatives of the pressure with respect to the chemical potential(s). In this work we set out to determine which of these schemes possesses the best convergence properties. To this end, we employ extreme-statistics lattice simulations on a $16^3\times8$ lattice, which allow us to obtain susceptibilities up to order eight with remarkably small errors. We compare in particular two methods, based on contours of constant (normalized) baryon density and of constant entropy density. We find that the latter converges more quickly, effectively requiring susceptibilities only up to order four to cover the chemical potential range up to at least $μ_B \approx 500$ MeV. We also extend the comparison to the three dimensional space of chemical potentials, and find that the entropy-based method consistently shows superior convergence.

Symmetries in High-Temperature Lattice QCD with $(u, d, s, c, b)$ Optimal Domain-Wall Quarks

We investigate the spatial $ z $-correlators of meson operators in $ N_f=2+1+1+1 $ lattice QCD with optimal domain-wall quarks across eight temperatures ranging from 325 to 3250 MeV. The meson operators include a complete set of Dirac bilinears for ten flavor combinations. Our findings reveal a hierarchical restoration of chiral symmetry in QCD with $ (u, d, s, c, b) $ quarks, progressing sequentially from $ SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_A $ to $ SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R \times U(1)_A $, then to $ SU(4)_L \times SU(4)_R \times U(1)_A $, and finally to $ SU(5)_L \times SU(5)_R \times U(1)_A $ as the temperature increases. Additionally, we explore the emergence of the $ SU(2)_{CS} $ chiral-spin symmetry and compare the temperature windows for all flavor combinations. Our results indicate that the temperature windows for the emergent $SU(2)_{CS}$ symmetry are primarily dominated by the $ \bar{u} b $ and $ \bar{s} b $ sectors.
