Perturbative renormalization of the first moment of structure functions for domain-wall QCD

Abstract

Using the domain-wall formulation of lattice fermions, we have computed the one-loop renormalization factors of one-link operators which measure the first nontrivial moment of the unpolarized, polarized and transversity structure functions, in the flavor nonsinglet sector. The knowledge of these factors is necessary in order to extract physical numbers from domain-wall Monte Carlo simulations of parton distributions. We have automated the perturbative calculations by developing suitable FORM codes. The results show that in many instances the total renormalization factors are almost equal to one, and that hence the corresponding operators are, for the appropriate values of the Dirac mass $M$ and the coupling $g_0$, practically unrenormalized.

Stochastic Path Sampler For Lattice Field Theory

In lattice field theory, target distributions are known only up to normalization, (\tildeπ(ϕ)\propto e^{-S(ϕ)}), while the partition function is intractable. Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations often become inefficient near phase transitions or the continuum limit due to critical slowing down. In this work, we propose a novel sampler based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics, called Stochastic Path Sampler (SPS), which can generate configurations for the unnormalized target distribution without requiring training data. The central idea of SPS is to establish a trajectory-level balance for learnable forward and backward stochastic dynamics between two equilibrium states, namely the prior and target distributions. This is achieved by minimizing the path-space variational free energy, equivalently an entropy-production upper bound, defined by the log-ratio of forward and auxiliary backward trajectory measures, thereby enhancing the reversibility of the forward and backward processes. The learned forward process provides independent proposals, which are subsequently corrected by an extended-space Independence Metropolis--Hastings step. In two-dimensional (ϕ^4) theory, we demonstrate that our neural sampler can achieve the same sampling quality as HMC but with a much shorter autocorrelation time in the critical region. This sampler offers a stochastic-quantization-inspired route to data-free proposal construction for lattice field theory by leveraging a variational free-energy principle derived from path-space irreversibility.

Nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from Boosted Correlations in the Coulomb gauge

Recently, a novel approach has been proposed to compute parton distributions through the use of boosted correlators fixed in the Coulomb gauge from lattice QCD, within the framework of Large-Momentum Effective Theory (LaMET). This approach circumvents the need for Wilson lines, potentially enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of lattice calculations. In this work, we present the first exploratory implementation of the Coulomb gauge method for calculating nucleon unpolarized, helicity, and transversity parton distribution functions (PDFs). The calculations are performed on a Highly-Improved-Staggered-Quark ensemble with lattice spacing $a = 0.06$ fm, volume $L_s^3 \times L_t=48^3\times 64$, and valence pion mass $m_π=300$ MeV, employing boosted nucleon states with momenta up to 3.04 GeV. Our lattice predictions for the valence-quark PDFs -- extracted from the real part of the correlators -- show good convergence with increasing nucleon momentum and are compatible with the most recent global analyses for all spin structures. On the other hand, the full-quark-channel PDFs obtained from the imaginary part of the correlators exhibit discrepancies between the two large nucleon momenta considered, although the results at the higher momentum are consistent with phenomenology. The discrepancies are likely driven by stronger excited-state contamination in the imaginary matrix elements, which is consistent with the observation in the literature. Overall, this work demonstrates the efficacy of the Coulomb gauge approach for nucleon PDFs and serves as a benchmark for its broader applications.

Continuum limit of a qubit-regularized SU(3) lattice gauge theory on a plaquette chain

We show that a simple qubit-regularized $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ lattice gauge theory on a plaquette chain admits a continuum limit with massive gauge-invariant excitations, providing a minimal toy model of strong interactions without quarks. By mapping the plaquette-chain Hamiltonian to the three-state quantum clock model in a magnetic field, we demonstrate that the theory can be tuned to a continuum limit governed at short distances by the $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion conformal field theory, which serves as the ultraviolet fixed point. A small relevant magnetic perturbation then drives the system to a massive continuum quantum field theory in the infrared, featuring relativistic particles. In this continuum theory we compute two universal ratios: the mass ratio of the lightest massive particles with opposite charge conjugation, $m^{-}/m^{+} = 1.459(2)$, and $\sqrtσ/m^{+} = 0.2648(2)$, where $σ$ denotes the string tension between a static quark and antiquark.
