Relativistic Structure, Stability and Gravitational Collapse of Charged Neutron Stars

Abstract

Charged stars have the potential of becoming charged black holes or even naked singularities. It is presented a set of numerical solutions of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations that represents spherical charged compact stars in hydrostatic equilibrium. The stellar models obtained are evolved forward in time integrating the Einstein-Maxwell field equations. It is assumed an equation of state of a neutron gas at zero temperature. The charge distribution is taken as been proportional to the rest mass density distribution. The set of solutions present an unstable branch, even with charge to mass ratios arbitrarily close to the extremum case. It is performed a direct check of the stability of the solutions under strong perturbations, and for different values of the charge to mass ratio. The stars that are in the stable branch oscillates and do not collapse, while models in the unstable branch collapse directly to form black holes. Stars with a charge greater or equal than the extreme value explode. When a charged star is suddenly discharged, it don't necessarily collapse to form a black hole. A non-linear effect that gives rise to the formation of an external shell of matter (see Ghezzi and Letelier 2005), is negligible in the present simulations. The results are in agreement with the third law of black hole thermodynamics and with the cosmic censorship conjecture.

A Temporal Splitting Theorem for Chronological Spaces

We obtain a generalization of Geroch's Theorem on temporal foliations in a globally hyperbolic space-time to chronological spaces under suitable topological and order-theoretic requirements. The foliation can be chosen to contain a given relatively compact antichain in one slice. We first prove the corresponding extension result for countable causal sets, and then give a direct proof for chronological spaces using past sets. Furthermore, we show that any chronological space-time admits a generalized Cauchy hypersurface containing a prescribed compact achronal set: it is crossed once by every inextendible timelike curve which is also a maximal chronological chain.

Matter-Dark Energy Transition: A Dynamical Systems Approach

In this study, we deviate from the traditional examination of the evolving universe through the scale factor and instead consider a parameter $\chiME$, defined by the ratio of two competing energy densities: matter (DM) and dynamic dark energy (DDE). While the scale factor's role is not neglected, it is inherently embedded within the evolution equations of these competing energy densities. By employing dynamical systems techniques, we investigate the behaviour of this ratio $\chiME$ to understand the dynamics surrounding the cosmological transition from matter domination to dark energy domination. This methodological shift allows for a more nuanced analysis of the matter-to-dark energy transition.

Enhancement of Electromagnetic Memory Effects

We show that the amplitude of electromagnetic memory can be significantly enhanced in comparison to known estimates. In a Lorentz breaking phase of lowered phase velocity of light, there exist critical spacetime directions of memory-source emission along the effective light cone, about which the total memory offset receives order of magnitude increases. The same amplification is already present in the Lorentz preserving case by considering ultra-relativistic memory-source charges. These observations may pave the way for a first observation of the phenomenon of memory and laboratory tests of the concepts of asymptotic symmetries and soft theorems.
