High performance magnetic field sensor based on Superconducting Quantum Interference Filters

Abstract

We have developed an absolute magnetic field sensor using Superconducting Quantum Interference Filter (SQIF) made of high-T_c grain boundary Josephson junctions. The device shows the typical magnetic field dependent voltage response V(B), which is sharp delta-like dip in the vicinity of zero magnetic field. When the SQIF is cooled with magnetic shield, and then the shield is removed, the presence of the ambient magnetic field induces a shift of the dip position from B_0 ~ 0 to a value B ~ B_1, which is about the average value of the earth magnetic field, at our latitude. When the SQIF is cooled in the ambient field without shielding, the dip is first found at B ~ B_1, and the further shielding of the SQIF results in a shift of the dip towards B_0 ~ 0. The low hysteresis observed in the sequence of experiments (less than 5% of B_1) makes SQIFs suitable for high precision measurements of the absolute magnetic field. The experimental results are discussed in view of potential applications of high-T_c SQIFs in magnetometry.

Vortex rivers and multiple voltage transitions in superconducting MgB$_2$ thin films

Vortex dynamics govern the dissipation and magneto-resistive properties of type-II superconductors. At large transport currents, the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) characteristics of a superconductor in the mixed state usually exhibit a nonlinear upturn followed by an abrupt jump occurring due to a flux-flow instability. However, other transition behaviors are also possible, including the formation of phase-slip lines and normal domains. Which mechanism dominates depends on the sample uniformity, its dimensions relative to the coherence length and penetration depth, and the rates of electron energy relaxation and heat removal. Here, based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation, we present the results of numerical modeling of the $I$-$V$ curves of superconducting films with various types of disorder. For a grain-boundary defect mesh, we find multiple voltage transitions overlaid with a nonlinear upturn of the $I$-$V$ curves. For randomly arranged elongated defects, the $I$-$V$ curves exhibit voltage steps, whereas for L-shaped defects oriented perpendicular to the transport current, the $I$-$V$ curves show extended linear regimes separated by voltage transitions. We analyze the evolution of the order parameter along the $I$-$V$ curves and discuss the experimental accessibility of the revealed dynamics regimes.

On the theory of supermodulation of the superconducting order parameter created by structural supermodulation of apex distance in optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$

Recently using Scanning Josephson Tunneling Microscopy (SJTM) in the group of Séamus Davis a super-modulation of the superconducting order parameter induced by super-modulation of the distance $δ$ between planar Cu and apical O was observed in [O'Mahony et. al., PNAS Vol. 119(37), e2207449119 (2022)]. The authors conclude that: "concurrence of prediction from strong correlation theory ... with these observations indicates that ... super-exchange is the electron pairing mechanism of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$". In our current theoretical study we use the LCAO approximation, Hilbert space spanned on 5 atomic orbitals: Cu$4s$, Cu$3d_{x^2-y^2}$, O$2p_x$, O$2p_y$, O$2p_z$. For the only super-exchange amplitude $J_{sd}$ we use the Kondo double electron exchange between Cu$4s$ and Cu$3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals and its anti-ferromagnetic sign is determined by adjacent to the Cu ion in-plane O orbitals. Within this approximations we have calculated: "Measured dependence of \dots electron-pair density $n_p$ on the displacement $δ$ of the apical O atoms from the planar Cu atoms" depicted in Fig. 5(C) of O'Mahony \textit{et. al.} and obtained an acceptable accuracy. As a whole, the analyzed SJTM experiment is one of the best confirmations of J. Röhler [J. Röhler, Physica B: Cond. Matter Vol. 284-288, 104 (2000)] idea that hybridization of Cu4$s$ with conduction band leads to increasing of $T_c$. The lack of an alternative explanations for SJTM data $n_p$ versus $δ$ and shape-$T_{c,max}$ correlations for the description of the critical temperature of optimally doped cuprates for several decades on the background of a simple view gives a hint that the long sought pairing mechanism has possibly been found and the Kondo exchange interaction as a property of strongly correlated quantum matter deserves further attention in the physics of layered cuprates.

On the Stability of the Polar Phase of Superfluid 3He in Nematic Aerogels

We study the stability of the solution corresponding to the polar phase of superfluid 3He in nematic aerogels with respect to perturbations induced by magnetic impurity scattering. We show that when the perturbation simultaneously breaks axial and time-reversal symmetry, the polar-distorted A phase is realized with the highest transition temperature. Within the proposed model of a p-wave scattering potential, which accounts for the effective spin-orbit interaction between the orbital angular momentum of a scattering quasiparticle and the magnetic moment texture of the scatterer, we solve the eigenvalue and eigenvector problem for the Gor'kov self-consistency equation. Finally, we discuss how our results relate to the available experimental data.
