New results for the t-J model in ladders: Changes in the spin liquid state with applied magnetic field. Implications for the cuprates

Abstract

Exact Diagonalization calculations are presented for the t-J model in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. Results for 2xL ladders (L=8,10,12) and 4x4 square clusters with 1 and 2 holes indicate that the diamagnetic response to a perpendicular magnetic field tends to induce a spin liquid state in the spin background. The zero-field spin liquid state of a two-leg ladder is reinforced by the magnetic field: a considerable increase of rung antiferromagnetic correlations is observed for J/t up to 0.6, for 1 and 2 holes. Pair-breaking is also clearly observed in the ladders and seems to be associated in part with changes promoted by the field in the spin correlations around the zero-field pair. In the 4x4 cluster, the numerical results seem to indicate that the field-induced spin liquid state competes with the zero-field antiferromagnetic short-range-order, the spin liquid state being favored by higher doping and smaller values of J/t. It is interesting to note that the field-effect can also be observed in a 2x2 plaquette with 1 and 2 holes. This opens up the possibility of gaining a qualitative understanding of the effect.

Huge Symmetric Elastoresistance in the Kondo Lattice YbRh$_2$Si$_2$

Heavy-fermion metals are prototype correlated electron systems for the study of Kondo entanglement and quantum criticality. We use the symmetry decomposed elastoresistance to uncover the fingerprints of strain-dependent Kondo scattering as function of temperature and magnetic field in the prototypical tetragonal Kondo lattice YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. By combining longitudinal and transverse resistance measurements under uniaxial strain applied along the tetragonal $[100]$ and $[110]$ directions, we obtain the elastoresistive responses in the in plane $A_{1g}$, $B_{1g}$, and $B_{2g}$ symmetry channels. While the responses in the symmetry-breaking channels are negligible, a huge enhancement of the isotropic symmetric $A_{1g}$ elastoresistance is found approaching -50 at low temperatures. Scaling analysis and comparison with linear thermal expansion measurements reveal that the symmetric elastoresistance probes the contribution of Kondo scattering to the strain dependence of magnetic entropy and signals strain- and field controlled quantum criticality upon cooling to 2 K.

Entanglement Properties of the One-Dimensional Dimerized Fermi-Hubbard Model

We study the entanglement properties of the one-dimensional dimerized Fermi-Hubbard model. Using a matrix-product-state approach, we compute the ground state and identify two insulating phases at 1/2- and 3/4-filling, along with a metallic phase, whose mechanisms can be characterized by their entanglement spectra. Our findings indicate that the two insulating phases are distinct, implying that the phase at 1/2-filling has a charge gap arising from the band gap, which is enhanced by repulsive interactions, while the phase at 3/4-filling exhibits a Mott gap resulting from particle interactions. This difference between the two insulating phases is reflected in the scaling properties of the half-chain entanglement entropy and the distribution of the entanglement spectrum.

Transformer Neural-Network Quantum States for lattice models of spins and fermions: Application to the Ancilla Layer Model

We introduce a variational wave function based on Neural-Network Quantum States (NQS) to study lattice systems whose local Hilbert space contains both spin and fermionic degrees of freedom. Our approach is based on the use of the Transformer architecture, which can naturally handle composite local Hilbert spaces through a tokenization procedure closely inspired by techniques from natural language processing. The neural network predicts a set of fermionic orbitals that depend on the spin configuration in a backflow-inspired manner. We apply the method to the one-dimensional Ancilla Layer Model, consisting of a chain of mobile spin-$1/2$ fermions coupled to a two-leg spin-$1/2$ ladder. For open boundary conditions, we achieve excellent quantitative agreement with Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) results across the full range of parameters considered. We find a phase in which the chain forms an effectively decoupled Luttinger liquid (LL), and a LL* phase with a distinct Fermi wavevector in which the mobile fermions are Kondo screened by one leg of the ladder, while the other leg forms the critical Bethe spin liquid. The LL* is the analog of the phase describing the pseudogap in two dimensions. We also find a Luther-Emery (LE) phase, where the LL* state becomes unstable toward the formation of a spin gap. The Transformer Ansatz maintains comparable accuracy for periodic boundary conditions, where tensor-network methods are computationally more demanding. Together, these findings establish Transformer-based NQS as an accurate and scalable variational framework for correlated lattice systems with composite local Hilbert spaces and highlight their potential for studying higher-dimensional models where boundary effects and heterogeneous local structures pose significant challenges.
