Ab Initio Evidence for the Formation of Impurity d(3z^2-r^2) Holes in Doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

Abstract

Using the spin unrestricted Becke-3-Lee-Yang-Parr density functional, we computed the electronic structure of explicitly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x = 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5). At each doping level, an impurity hole band is formed within the undoped insulating gap. This band is well-localized to CuO_6 octahedra adjacent to the Sr impurities. The nature of the impurity hole is A_{1g} in symmetry, formed primarily from the z^2 orbital on the Cu and p_z orbitals on the apical O's. There is a strong triplet coupling of this hole with the intrinsic B_{1g} Cu x^2-y^2/O1 p_{sigma} hole on the same site. Optimization of the c coordinate of the apical O's in the doped CuO_6 octahedron lead to an asymmetric anti-Jahn-Teller distortion of the O2 atoms toward the central Cu. In particular, the O2 atom between the Cu and Sr is displaced 0.26 A while the O2 atom between the Cu and La is displaced 0.10 A. Contrary to expectations, investigation of a 0.1 A enhanced Jahn-Teller distortion of this octahedron does not force formation of an x^2-y^2 hole, but instead leads to migration of the z^2 hole to the four other CuO_6 octahedra surrounding the Sr impurity. This latter observation offers a simple explanation for the bifurcation of the Sr-O2 distance revealed in x-ray absorption fine structure data.

Interlayer pairing mechanism for bilayer nickelate superconductors

The discovery of superconductivity in Ruddlesden-Popper bilayer nickelates under both high pressure and ambient conditions has opened a new paradigm for exploring unconventional superconductivity. This review provides a brief survey of theoretical progress on bilayer nickelate superconductors. Drawing from the key experimental observations, we summarize essential physical ingredients including the hybridized Ni-3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ and 3$d_{z^2}$ electronic structure, orbital-dependent electronic correlation, Hund's coupling, and strong interlayer magnetic coupling. The fundamental theoretical models including the bilayer two-orbital Hubbard model and its minimal $t$-$J$ variants are introduced. Starting from the atomic-limit interlayer valence bond picture of the half-filled $d_{z^2}$ orbital, we elaborate on strong correlation interlayer pairing mechanisms based on different limiting considerations. Specific emphasis is placed on the hybridization mechanism, where the $d_{z^2}$ local singlet pairs provide the pairing energy and their hybridization with itinerant $d_{x^2-y^2}$ promotes superconducting phase coherence. We further analyze the pairing symmetry, the dependence of $T_c$ on various internal and external parameters, the nontrivial normal state properties including the Fermi liquid, non-Fermi liquid, weakly insulating and pseudogap behaviors. Effects of pressure tuning, oxygen content, and Kondo scattering induced by oxygen vacancies are also discussed. Finally, weak correlation theories based on spin fluctuations associated with Fermi surface nesting are briefly covered.

Cooper Pairing Mediated by Onsite Exchange: A Possible Mechanism For High-Temperature Superconductivity

Among the various mechanisms proposed for unconventional superconductivity, this paper focuses on the Coulomb interaction responsible for $d$-wave and $s_\pm$-wave pairing symmetries in cuprates and iron pnictides. Although the effective multi-orbital interaction $U_\text{eff}=U-J$ is predominantly repulsive, an attractive component driven by the Hund's coupling parameter $J$ is sufficient to bind fractional charges. This attractive multi-orbital contribution and a repulsive term of the single-band Hubbard model yield the superconducting pairing gap $Δ_0$ and an estimate of the transition temperature $T_c$. Given the complex electronic structure and vast compositional space of these materials, the model focuses exclusively on the doped superconducting plane hosting these fractional charges. Through this approach, an analytical expression mainly dependent on the Hubbard $U$ and Hund $J$ parameters that reproduces the empirical superconducting dome is derived. Furthermore, the model addresses the characteristic electron and hole doping asymmetry observed in cuprates by accounting for Hund's coupling parameters. Finally, while the model describes strange metal behavior, it currently provides only a qualitative explanation for the pseudogap phase and the underdoped isotope effect.

Crystallographic imperfections and exotic superconductivity of UBe$_{13}$

The symmetry of the superconducting gap is related to the symmetry of the crystal structure. In unconventional superconductors, big changes of the critical temperature, critical field or even the gap structure can happen even for small perturbations of the lattice. In this letter, we use microstructuring to study aluminium-free crystals of UBe$_{13}$ which are expected to be closer to "perfect" material than previously studied aluminium-grown single crystals. We compare the effect of minuscule imperfections on the value of the critical temperature and critical field, which, in the case of UBe$_{13}$, has drastic effects, supporting its unconventional nature. We conjecture that this likely arises from the oxidation state of uranium, which is sensitive to its crystal environment. Our findings suggests that uranium-based materials provide not only an excellent reservoir of new unconventional phenomena, but also a way to identify the gap symmetry of unconventional superconductors.
