Truncation of geometrically thin disks around massive black holes in galactic nuclei

Abstract

The concept of an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), with or without wind loss, was used to describe the spectra of the galactic center source Sgr A*, low-luminosity AGN and nuclei of elliptical galaxies (including M87). The spectral fits of various authors show that the transition from the geometrically thin disk to the hot flow occurs at quite different distances, apparently not uniquely related to the mass flow rate in the disk. We compare these results with the results of theoretical modeling where we determine the truncation of the thin outer disk from the efficiency of mass evaporation. The physics is the same as in the case of galactic black holes systems (Meyer et al. 2000b). For the observationally indicated mass flow rates our model predicts a truncation at 10^3 to 10^4 Schwarzschild radii. We discuss whether far inside this truncation an innermost cool thin disk could exist and affect the spectrum.

Can inhomogeneities solve the horizon problem ?

We show how inhomogeneous cosmological models can naturally explain the large angle correlation we observe in the CMB (cosmological microwave background) radiation without invoking any inflationary stage, but simply considering the effects of inhomogeneities on the propagation of photons from the last scattering surface.

Helium abundance in galaxy clusters and Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect

It has long been suggested that helium nuclei in the intracluster plasma can sediment in the cluster gravitational potential well. Some theoretical estimates for the cores of relaxed clusters predict an excess of helium abundance by up to a factor of a few over its primordial value. The intracluster helium abundance cannot be measured directly. This presents a significant source of uncertainty for cosmological tests based on the X-ray derived cluster quantities, such as the gas mass, total mass, and gas mass fraction, all of which depend on the assumed helium abundance. We point out that cluster distances derived by combining the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) and X-ray data also depend on the helium abundance. This dependence can be used to measure the abundance, provided the distance is known independently. For example, if one adopts the WMAP H_0 value, then the recent H_0 measurement by Bonamente and collaborators, derived from SZ data on 38 clusters assuming a primordial helium abundance, corresponds to an abundance excess by a factor of 1.9+-0.8 within r~1 Mpc (using only their statistical errors). This shows that interesting accuracy is within reach. We also briefly discuss how the SZ and X-ray cluster data can be combined to resolve the helium abundance dependence for the d_a(z) cosmological test.

Primordial statistical anisotropy generated at the end of inflation

We present a new mechanism for generating primordial statistical anisotropy of curvature perturbations. We introduce a vector field which has a non-minimal kinetic term and couples with a waterfall field in hybrid inflation model. In such a system, the vector field gives fluctuations of the end of inflation and hence induces a subcomponent of curvature perturbations. Since the vector has a preferred direction, the statistical anisotropy could appear in the fluctuations. We present the explicit formula for the statistical anisotropy in the primordial power spectrum and the bispectrum of curvature perturbations. Interestingly, there is the possibility that the statistical anisotropy does not appear in the power spectrum but does appear in the bispectrum. We also find that the statistical anisotropy provides the shape dependence to the bispectrum.
