Zero-shot time-series foundation models against the Khepri v1.5 baselines for 96-hour carbon-intensity forecasts in nine Nordic bidding zones: a preregistered comparison

Abstract

We compare three zero-shot time-series foundation models (Timestral-5M, Timestral-209M and Chronos-2, 8192-hour context, no covariates) with the Khepri v1.5 SARIMA and GBM baselines, with their code and hyperparameters unchanged, for 96-hour forecasts of hourly carbon intensity in the Nordic bidding zones NO1-NO5 and SE1-SE4. The design, the analysis code and a minimum detectable effect (MDE) were timestamped before any foundation-model forecast by an OpenTimestamps proof (Bitcoin-confirmed) and the GPG-signed tag prereg-v1; the proofs are archived in Zenodo (DOI 10.5281/zenodo.23881315). The preregistration was also submitted to OSF Registries 2026-11-02 07:49 UTC (osf.io/hncz5; embargo requested, pending OSF approval). On the 2025 test (361 daily origins, contamination not ruled out) all three models have a lower zone-averaged MAPE than both baselines, by 0.952 to 1.347 percentage points (Diebold-Mariano with the Harvey-Leybourne-Newbold correction, all p < 0.0001), and each beats SARIMA in 9 of 9 zones. On a post-release holdout of 14 origins from 2026-10-16 the point estimates have the same sign (0.729 to 1.326 percentage points lower), but all lie within the preregistered MDE of 2.989 points and are reported as not determined. For calibration (RQ4) the preregistration locked a Diebold-Mariano-HLN test on CRPS; the MDE applies to MAPE only. Holdout CRPS point estimates (n = 14) are 1.1114 (Timestral-5M), 1.0733 (Timestral-209M) and 1.1198 (Chronos-2) against 1.4165 gCO2-eq/kWh for SARIMA (each p < 0.0001). The SARIMA quantiles are constructed from the fitted model's Gaussian predictive distribution (deviation D-03), not taken from a native v1.5 forecast, so the difference may partly reflect the SARIMA intervals. The contamination indicator does not exceed its preregistered threshold for any comparison; with 14 holdout origins it has low power (HAC standard errors 0.124 to 0.360 pp).

Open-ended innovation arm-race in zero-sum games

We discuss zero-sum games with open-ended innovation, whereby each player may introduce new strategies. The innovation process is modeled as a draw of new strategies form a distribution. It is argued that, when the cost of innovation is vanishingly small, this setting can lead to an everlasting innovation arm-race. In particular, the introduction of new technologies of the advanced player increases the marginal utility for technological innovation of the backward one, whereas innovation of the backward player discourages the more advanced one to innovate.

Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment of Fossil- and Bio-Based Membrane Manufacturing

The transition towards sustainable membrane manufacturing is challenged by its reliance on fossil-based polymers, organic solvents, and generation of large volumes of contaminated water. We combined process simulation, life cycle assessment, and Monte Carlo simulation to identify hotspots in the manufacturing of ultrafiltration hollow-fiber membranes for pharmaceutical applications and evaluate strategies to mitigate impact and reduce waste generation. Process models informed by industry input compared fossil- and bio-based membranes on a cradle-to-gate basis per square meter of membrane produced. Key environmental hotspots include polymer and bore solution preparation, driven by the contribution of polymer and solvent, accounting for 30-80% of total impacts across the categories investigated, and wastewater dilution, driven by the environmental burden of solvent-contaminated wastewater management. Under the modeled conditions, although polymer substitution can reduce environmental burdens, cellulose-based membranes show higher impacts than polysulfone membranes in at least 85% of simulations within each impact category, due to chemical-intensive cellulose modification and regeneration. In contrast, solvent recycling can mitigate solvent- and wastewater-related burdens when combined with reduced water demand, yielding climate change benefits at water demands below approximately 36 L per m2 under the modeled recovery configuration and highlighting its potential to reduce the environmental footprint of membrane manufacturing.

Fractional Orbital Bombardment Systems

We analyze Fractional Orbital Bombardment Systems (FOBS) as a means of delivering nuclear weapons by placing warheads into partial orbits around the Earth, and show that they do not represent a game-changing advance in technology or capability. We consider potential uses of such a weapon, including evading missile defenses and delivering attacks with short warning time. FOBS could underfly current exoatmospheric defenses, but the required payload reduction may not justify its use if other countermeasures are deemed effective. If a FOBS attack could be successfully disguised as a satellite launch, the warning time could be short enough to raise fears of a decapitating strike. The development of such a capability could lead countries to shorten decision-making timelines in a crisis, which would be destabilizing. The US can take steps to ensure that very-short-warning attacks would not succeed, thereby enhancing deterrence during a crisis.
