A Singularity Theorem for Quasi-Topological Gravities
Abstract
Quasi-topological theories of gravity have recently attracted substantial attention as several theories in this class have a non-singular black hole as a vacuum and spherically symmetric solution. This motivates the expectation that these theories can provide a resolution to the singularity problem and a description of black holes cores. The known solutions, however, possess a Cauchy horizon which denotes the end of predictability of the theory, as the initial data do not determine a unique continuation past this type of horizon. In this paper, we show that Penrose singularity theorem can be extended to all the known classes of quasi-topological theories that have non-singular black holes as solutions. We prove that spherical collapse satisfying the null energy condition necessarily leads to future null geodesic incompleteness once a trapped sphere forms. This implies that the lack of predictability of the theories is not an artefact of vacuum solutions and these theories are as problematic as general relativity for the dynamical studies of black hole interiors.
