The Disordered Universe 2025: An Intro and a Vision

Abstract

The Disordered Universe is a novel research direction that exploits ideas and techniques coming from apparently unrelated research areas, ranging from cosmology to scattering amplitudes in particle physics and disordered complex systems, with the aim of addressing open questions in cosmology at all scales, from the very infra-red (or very late time) to the early universe. This paper acts as a general introduction and vision for a set of lectures delivered at the first La Ricotta Summer School "The Disordered Universe 2025", held from 21 July to 10 August 2025. These lectures involved open quantum systems, analytic properties of scattering amplitudes and correlation functions, foundations and quantum aspects of the de Sitter universe, as well as statistical physics out of equilibrium and spin glasses. While the lecture notes related to each course taught at the school will be published separately and are inevitably devoted to both conceptual and technical aspects of each of these topics, the school was not meant to be a collage of independent topics: the present paper has the purpose of outlining the global vision, how cosmology ends up being a unifier and benefits from both their viewpoint and techniques, how all the concepts and techniques originally coming from these four different areas are part of the same cosmological narrative, why this point of view deserves to be explored, and drawing perspectives for the future. We consider it crucial to build a microscopic theory for the early universe and maybe one that embraces all scales.

Symmetries and operators in $T\bar{T}$ deformed CFTs

$T\bar{T}$-deformed CFTs are known to possess nonlocal Virasoro$\times$Virasoro symmetries, whose currents depend on integration of the stress tensor. Unfortunately, these symmetries do not act in a tractable manner on the undeformed operators, which are defined by evolving local operators in the undeformed CFT on a constant-time slice using the deformed Hamiltonian. In this paper, we explicitly construct two distinct classes of operators: (i) dressed operators, which are primary with respect to the Virasoro$\times$Virasoro symmetries, and (ii) physical operators, a new type of operator that depends on fundamental fields at specific points and is therefore local at the classical level. While dressed operators preserve the conformal symmetry structure, they are themselves nonlocal in the sense that they depend on integrated quantities. Physical operators, by contrast, depend only on local fields. Moreover, physical operators can be expressed in terms of dressed operators, and this relation can be promoted to a definition of such operators at the quantum level. This enables the use of Virasoro$\times$Virasoro symmetries to systematically compute physical quantities such as correlation functions. We calculate the two-point correlation functions of these operators in momentum space and find that our results align with both string theory predictions and field theory calculations. Additionally, we explore the relationship between physical operators and alternative operator definitions proposed in the literature.

Gravitational form factors of the proton in the improved holographic QCD model

We compute the gluonic contribution to the gravitational form factors of the proton using the improved holographic QCD model, in which the proton is described in terms of bulk Dirac fermions. Model parameters are constrained using lattice and phenomenological input, allowing us to obtain estimates for the gravitational form factors and to compare them with results from other approaches. Using the extracted form factors, we analyze mechanical properties of the proton, including pressure and shear distributions. We obtain estimates for the mechanical and mass radii of the proton, $ρ_{\text{mech}} \approx 0.63$ fm, $ρ_{\text{mass}} \approx 0.65$ fm, and compare these values with radius estimates from other nonperturbative studies.

Beyond Discontinuities: Cosmological WFCs and the Supersymmetric Orthogonal Grassmannian

We construct an $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric Grassmannian representation of tree-level wavefunction coefficients (WFCs) by combining Grassmannian representations of energy discontinuities with an inversion formula. Since the orthogonal Grassmannian captures homogeneous solutions of the spinor conformal Ward identities, while current WFCs satisfy inhomogeneous Ward identities, the full WFC is obtained by reconstructing the energy-dependent prefactors from a basis of discontinuities. We first demonstrate this mechanism at three points, where the triple discontinuity determines the transverse current WFC and admits a supersymmetric uplift. At four points, we invert a spanning set of five current discontinuities and embed the result in momentum superspace using super-orthogonal-Grassmannian invariants generated by $\hatδ(CΩΞ^I)$. This yields the full four-point super WFC in Grassmannian form. We show that the two orthogonal-Grassmannian branches organize distinct supersymmetric invariants and reduce, in the flat-space limit, to different helicity superamplitudes.
