Spectral delocalization and central limit theorems for Fourier functionals of stationary Gaussian fields

Abstract

We characterize Gaussian fluctuations of Fourier-Hermite functionals of stationary Gaussian fields on locally compact Abelian groups via spectral delocalization: conditional on the total spectral sum being near the probed frequency, no partial sum concentrates. Under suitable assumptions, this reduces Gaussian convergence to small-ball estimates for convolution powers of the spectral measure, without model-specific contraction estimates. On $\mathbb T^d$, the criterion yields CLTs at every fixed frequency for band-limited fields and random trigonometric polynomials, and extends the known failure of Gaussian convergence for planar arithmetic random waves from the fourth chaos to all even orders $q\ge4$. On $\mathbb R^d$ and $\mathbb Z^d$, we establish a Breuer-Major theorem for Fourier functionals at every frequency with nonzero limiting variance. Cyclical long-memory models exhibit frequency-dependent Gaussian convergence. We also establish CLTs and variance asymptotics for singular continuous spectral measures, including those of stationary Gaussian solutions of linear PDEs. At zero frequency, weak Ahlfors regularity of the spectral support and an $L^2$ density suffice for second-chaos CLTs, covering fractal sets, the Airy surface of Gaussian sea waves, and smooth compact manifolds. For a class of smooth hypersurfaces, we obtain the same variance rates and CLTs known for classical nonlinear functionals of Berry's random wave model. Finally, for random waves with spherical spectral densities bounded above and below, we classify Gaussian convergence at every frequency $\|z\|\le q$: it fails only for the planar second chaos when $0<\|z\|<2$.

Decay of correlations and thermodynamic limit for the circular Riesz gas

We study the circular Riesz gas, a one-dimensional system of particles with power-law repulsion. For the long-range gas, we prove that the correlation between two gaps at distance $d$ decays like $d^{s-2}$, up to an arbitrarily small loss in the exponent, and that this exponent is sharp. As a consequence, the microscopic point process converges as the number of particles tends to infinity, and its limit is hyperuniform. We also prove the decay of correlations and the convergence of the microscopic point process for the hypersingular gas. The proof analyzes the Helffer-Sjöstrand equation, an elliptic system in high dimension that encodes covariances. It combines the deformation of Combes and Thomas with discrete elliptic regularity estimates and a factorization around the equally spaced configuration.

Unimodular random ideal hyperbolic polyhedra: geometric characteristics and random walks

We initiate a systematic study of unimodular random infinite ideal hyperbolic polyhedra in three-dimensional hyperbolic space, developing a geometric and probabilistic theory of their global behavior. At the heart of this theory is an intrinsic geometric characteristic, determined entirely by the dihedral angles surrounding a polyhedral face. We establish a unimodular Gauss-Bonnet identity and show that the expectation of this local geometric invariant completely determines the global conformal type: under suitable assumptions, a random ideal polyhedron is almost surely parabolic precisely when the expected characteristic vanishes, and hyperbolic precisely when it is negative. This provides a sharp geometric classification of random infinite ideal polyhedra. Building on the correspondence with ideal circle patterns, we further develop a refined Ring Lemma that yields quantitative geometric control without bounded-degree assumptions. Combining these geometric tools with unimodular probability methods, we identify the Poisson boundary of the face random walk and establish positive linear hyperbolic speed. Together, these results establish a local-to-global framework linking intrinsic dihedral geometry, conformal uniformization, and stochastic behavior at infinity for unimodular random infinite ideal hyperbolic polyhedra.

Statistics on Yau's conjecture: Variance asymptotics

We investigate the probabilistic counterpart of Yau's conjecture on the nodal volume of Laplace eigenfunctions on compact manifolds, by studying the high-frequency variance asymptotics of Riemannian random waves. Theorem A gives quantitative bounds on the fluctuations of their nodal volume for all regimes of spectral windows, including the monochromatic one, of spectral size 1. For every non-monochromatic window the variance has the exact order $1/N$, where $N$ is the dimension of the underlying space of eigenfunctions, on any compact manifold. In the monochromatic regime, on manifolds without conjugate points and in particular on negatively curved ones, we prove that the variance is $o(1/N)$: this improves the previous best bound, cf. Canzani and Hanin 2020, to its square divided by a logarithmic factor, and exhibits a form of Berry's cancellation, relative to the natural scale $1/N$, for monochromatic random waves on such chaotic manifolds. Our proofs rely on a local and global analysis combining the Kac-Rice formula, the Wiener--Itô chaos decomposition recently obtained by the authors Stecconi and Todino 2025, and a sharp analysis of the error in the pointwise Weyl law associated to an arbitrary spectral window (Theorem B). We also introduce a general machinery (Theorem C) that yields variance decay for the nodal volume of an arbitrary Gaussian field under broad geometric conditions, subject to correlation decay assumptions.
