Large superconducting diode effect indicates nonuniform triplet pairing in UTe2

Abstract

The superconducting diode effect (SDE) is characterized by unequal critical current magnitudes for opposite-polarity current flow, owing to broken spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetries. For a superconducting pair wavefunction to spontaneously break inversion symmetry implies the formation of Cooper pairs with nonzero momentum, yielding a nonuniform superconducting state. For singlet superconductors, the formation of such a (FFLO) state has long been understood to provide an escape from high field Pauli pair-breaking -- how and why such an effect might occur for equal spin pairing is an open question. Here we report the observation of a large SDE in bulk specimens of the three-dimensional heavy-fermion triplet superconductor UTe$_2$, with a peak diode efficiency of 33% at the high magnetic field strength of 33.6 T, representing the highest-field observation of the SDE to date. Crucially, this nonreciprocal transport is strictly confined to a narrow field regime where superconductivity coexists with a field-induced spin-polarized state near a first-order metamagnetic phase boundary. The absence of the SDE away from this slender phase-intersection argues strongly against purely extrinsic vortex pinning asymmetries. Instead, our findings indicate spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking accompanied by finite-momentum Cooper pairing. We model this behavior using a phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory, demonstrating that the intertwining of magnetic and triplet superconducting orders can stabilize an odd-parity FFLO state.

Symmetry-resolved superconducting diode response

The superconducting diode effect manifests as nonreciprocal properties of critical currents, yet a systematic tensorial framework for its symmetry-governed responses remains lacking. We develop such a framework by relating the angular harmonics of critical currents to the magnetic field. Crystalline symmetries constrain the dipolar response to be purely antisymmetric (Hall-like) in Rashba superconductors with $C_{3v}$, $C_{4v}$, or $C_{6v}$ symmetry, whereas they require a diagonal, traceless tensor in Dresselhaus superconductors with $D_{2d}$ symmetry. For systems with fourfold symmetry, the octupole response appears at linear order, whose response tensors take symmetric off-diagonal and identity forms for $C_{4v}$ and $D_{2d}$ symmetries, respectively. Furthermore, nematicity activates otherwise forbidden tensor components, providing a sensitive probe of rotational symmetry breaking in superconductors. At cubic order in the magnetic field, the nonlinear response tensors likewise exhibit distinct symmetry-dependent patterns. Our framework establishes a symmetry-resolved characterization of the superconducting diode effect and provides a route to probing the underlying electronic structure and symmetry-breaking orders.

Dichotomous electronic system in a bilayer Ni$^{1+}$ nickelate

"Infinite layer" nickelates ${\cal R}$NiO$_2$ (${\cal R}$=rare earth), having empty apical O sites, become superconducting upon hole doping, stimulating research into the related sequence Nd$_{n+1}$Ni$^{+p}_n$O$_{2n+2}$, formal charge state $p$=1+$\frac{1}{n}$, $n$=2,3,4,...., with the $n$=5 member being found to be superconducting. The two layer system La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_{7-δ}$, with $δ$=0,$\frac{1}{2}$,1 ($p$=2.5,2,1.5) approaches the peak in the nickelate superconducting dome but shows no superconductivity. Newly reported La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_5$F reaches the Ni$^{1+}$ goal while, as we show, introducing a partially occupied electron band $E^*$, based on an interstitial density that extends over the three open "apical" layers and leads to a single cylindrical electron Fermi surface giving self-doping. The commonly inert Ni $d_{xz},d_{yz}$ orbitals partner with interstitial $E^*$ to provide an incipient non-analytic Dirac point, with the critical point being reachable by pressure or further F insertion. The $E^*$ electron cylinder and the conventional Ni $dpσ$ hole carriers combine to provide a two-fluid dichotomy of hole and electron quasiparticles, affecting normal state properties that should verify the dichotomous aspect of transport.

Nano-Nb Superconducting 3D Josephson Junctions Arrays in Cu-Normal Matrix: Superconducting Phase Coherence and Quantum Fluctuations Properties

To address the complex interplay of microstructural evolution, phase separation, superconductivity coherence and quantum fluctuations, we prepared Cuxwt%Nb series of granular samples by rapidly cooling, where the niobium concentration varied (x = 3, 5, 15, 20). By employing this method, we successfully obtained samples characterized by well-defined precipitates of niobium, featuring regular sizes and grain spacing. The goal was to establish a systematic and robust method approach for obtaining samples with different of sub-micrometric precipitates distributions but also to investigate their superconducting properties. Structural characterization by optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy, dc Mdc[H,T] ac inductive , as well the magneto-transport measures rhodc[H,T], Rdc[V,I.H,T], I[V,H,T] and [H,T,I] were done. Also, using a micro Hall sensor with 10 measuring transverse voltage bridges regularly distributed, we were able to obtain the real external applied magnetic field value inside of the chamber sample space. Thus e studied the dependence of configuration of the Nb grains in the superconducting coupling order parameter properties that connects the grains superconductors to the normal Cu matrix. We verify through magnetization and transport measures the signature of the double transition. This, when we apply current of different intensities, in the transport measures, and different field values, in the inductive measures. This behavior is an indication that our system is made up of by a collection of superconducting grains immersed in a well-organized in a non-superconducting matrix. The results indicate that the superconducting properties of these systems are manifested usually through two transition temperatures Tc(H) e TcJ(H).
