Computer-assisted proofs of periodic solutions of state-dependent delay equations beyond perturbative regimes

Abstract

Rigorous existence results for periodic solutions of state-dependent delay differential equations (SDDEs) are scarce outside perturbative regimes, where the equation is close to an ordinary or constant-delay differential equation. We develop a computer-assisted framework that proves the existence of periodic solutions of SDDEs directly. The numerical approximation is a trigonometric polynomial, and a true periodic solution nearby is obtained by a Newton--Kantorovich argument in the space of $C^1$ periodic functions. The main difficulty lies in the terms in which the solution is evaluated at a time that itself depends on the solution. We obtain rigorous enclosures of their Fourier coefficients by adapting validated discrete Fourier transform techniques for analytic nonlinearities. We apply the framework to three representative examples of increasing complexity: a periodically forced toy model, an autonomous scalar equation with two state-dependent delays, and a threshold-type delay model from operon dynamics in gene regulation. To our knowledge, these are the first computer-assisted proofs of existence of periodic solutions of SDDEs outside perturbative regimes. This opens the way to computer-assisted proofs for SDDEs more broadly. All computer-assisted proofs, including the requisite codes and the approximate objects, are accessible on GitHub at \cite{code_proof}.

Infinite unrestricted sumsets in subsets of abelian groups with large density

Let $(G,+)$ be a countable abelian group such that the subgroup $\{g+g\colon g\in G\}$ has finite index and the doubling map $g\mapsto g+g$ has finite kernel. We establish lower bounds on the upper density of a set $A\subset G$ with respect to an appropriate Følner sequence, so that $A$ contains a sumset of the form $\{t+b_1+b_2\colon b_1,b_2\in B\}$ or $\{b_1+b_2\colon b_1,b_2\in B\}$, for some infinite $B\subset G$ and some $t\in G$. Both assumptions on $G$ are necessary for our results to be true. We also characterize the Følner sequences for which this is possible. Finally, we show that our lower bounds are optimal in a strong sense.

A Homological Approach to Dynamics

This note describes a novel approach to systematically characterize dynamics based on finite information. We present an algebraic framework for dynamics from which it is possible to deduce more traditional descriptors associated with the qualitative structures of the geometric theory of dynamical systems. The purpose of this paper is to indicate how this approach can be used to obtain interpretable characterizations of dynamics that are robust with respect to perturbations, in the context of models of multiscale and data-driven systems.
